I was at my mom's house today, she lives in the same house where we grew up. I drove into the Main Street to get a pizza for lunch. Looking around at the town, I remembered exactly why I left the day after graduation 40 years ago and never looked back. Ugh, ick, no. Rural, poor, small town with few options. I was trying to figure out what it would take to get me to move back, and I concluded that there isn't enough money on the planet to get me to move back.
Anyway, thought I would create a poll!

With what we have going on now and our plans for the future moving back there would be a huge step backwards. Now, I grew up on a farm in the country, and even though I love the openness, solitude and the view into the valley, it was way too much work and I certainly not going to move someplace that high maintenance.
We are pretty happy where we are and the location works for everyone in the house.

I'm not sure what the "Oprah" choice means, but if an opportunity arose that made if feasible to move back and earn a decent living, I would.

My hometown is San Diego. I left for college and immediately came back after graduation. I have no plans to leave.

I would like to be closer to family, but they live in a very rural area that has very few options for entertainment, shopping, etc unless you drive an hour. They also continually elected Steve King, so that alone tells me that I probably don't want to live there. I wouldn't mind moving to a more liberal area than where I currently live, I definitely don't want to go where there are even more Trump supporters. And no Target.

I didn't see an option to say yes so Oprah it is. I wish I had done it years ago but now it would be too much for me to do at my age. I do not like it where I live at all but I am here and as they say "it is what it is".

Heck no!! My hometown is a hick town where there are no jobs or culture. That is the last place I would want to live.

No, not going back. It is only 15 miles from me here. Didn't fit in then, surely would not now.

I voted no, but the option is there. It was a wonderful place to grow up. Like many places, it is not the rural place anymore and is now a built up exurb. Taxes and car insurance is high. But it is still a niceness place. I don’t think DH would move there due to the taxes. His hometown has the same situation, though not as built up.

Depends on definition of "home town": town in which one was born - then yes, that is where I am now having returned after 50+ years. The town in which I "grew up (from age 12) and went to high school", then a resounding NO.

I could never afford it. I grew up in the Bay Area. The house I grew up in sold for over a million dollars a few years ago.
I love California and the weather, so I would love to move back. But, $$$.

It seems to be an old joke around here - "Oprah" for answers that don't fit within the parameters. We'll have to use it for "yes" in this circumstance since I am a dingus and forgot to add "yes". I added "Oprah" because usually that's the first post - "where's the Oprah option?". It's an old joke that I don't really get, but I'm easy and like to play along.

Ummmm, no. It would be nice to be close to family (would it though?) but we left for jobs and opportunities and nothing has changed. Plus the health care there is pretty crap.

In a heartbeat!! But it is VERY EXPENSIVE so....🤷♀️
Edited - though I only live about 5 miles from the house I grew up in and my parents are still there. I’d say there is a real possibility I could move back - it’s a fabulous area. Or I might move out of state.

I grew up in a small Texas town with less than 2,000 people. I left less than a week after I graduated from high school. I would not live there again even if I was offered a million dollars. Just thinking about it makes me nauseous.

I currently live six miles from where I lived in birth - 10. Technically a different city but same community, really.
My parents live in the city where I lived from 10 - 25. I'd have no problem living there again, but probably not while my mom is still alive. She would have boundary issues.

I really want to say yes, I would, but truthfully it's a hard no. It's a really small town (population 1500; my graduating class of 1987 was 42!), and I do like the small-town feel with farmland all around, but... there's no real jobs or industry anywhere close, the main street is dying from highways that drew traffic around the town instead of through, there's a very small-town insular attitude, no real restaurants or stores to speak of without going at least 10 miles (or farther), etc. etc.
Now that I'm getting older, I'd love to live in a small town again, but it would have to be the right one- and sadly, my hometown is NOT it.

I’m not sure I have a “home town”. The town where most of my family is right now, no, the town where I graduated from high school, no. We moved at the end of grade 3 and the end of grade 5 and one month into grade 7.
If we could just move, it would be to the city where DH and I started out and where our boys were born.

DH and I would love to - it was hard selling my mum's house - not because I loved the house or even had fond memories of it (they moved in while I was in college) but because it was the last tie we had to the area. Short of winning the lottery (and not just a couple of million - we would need more than that) we can't afford to move back. Even visiting is expensive and it's a 2 day drive away (2 LONG days)

Hell no. I hate that town. My mom , grandpa and best friend live there so I go . But as little as possible. There is only money if you work at the jail and or hospital. It's an hr from where I live. Harder drugs have really moved into the town and its getting worst and worst there. I hated that place when I lived there and ran first chance I got. I wasn't born there but spent from 10 till 23 there. I've lived in my current town for 19 years. I love it here. Unless I win the lottery I am not leaving.

I didn’t like where I grew up. Hot, little to do, no real natural beauty, and pretty conservative at the time. My parents moved out about eight years ago, so I haven’t been back in a while, but it has gradually become less of a farming community and more of an inconvenient bedroom community for SF Bay Area workers, so I am imagining there are probably more cultural options now (eg, I know there is now a performing arts center). Still, I really hate heat, and I really like green, so I cannot imagine ever moving back.

I would go back for a summer home (PEI) but the winters can be harsh there so wouldn’t enjoy that.

I picked Oprah. I don’t consider it my hone town because I wasn’t born here but where I spent a chunk of my life and my parents settled here. We had reasons for moving back mostly because DH traveled a lot and we had 3 little kids and my mom helped me a lot. But now we are stuck here because I’m my dads care taker and My youngest is in HS. I hate it here and want to move but I’m not pulling up stakes until DD graduates. And we will probably stay the first 2 years of college too because community college is now free here.
