The plan to take back the House in 2022: Gerrymandering based on the 2020 census.
Be aware. Take action. Call, write, donate, volunteer, spread the word.

It is so frustrating. If your only real election plan is overthrow the will of the voters, keep people from voting in the first place, and gerrymander the crap out of the states, YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.

It is so frustrating. If your only real election plan is overthrow the will of the voters, keep people from voting in the first place, and gerrymander the crap out of the states, YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG. It’s so freaking disheartening. There’s the normal people, and then there’s the people who want to steal elections while accusing the normal people of stealing elections. I believe we quit extreme gerrymandering in California. We have an independent board with representatives of both parties to draw up the districts. I agree with that and wish the rest of the country would get on board.

Some good news on the State Law front: An interesting experiment in voting rights moves ahead in Virginia "All signs are that the Republican Party’s key takeaway from then-President Donald Trump’s failed effort to overturn the election — first by trying to corrupt local officials, then by inciting mob violence — is that Republicans must only double down on the anti-democratic tactics. In numerous states, Republicans are moving forward with new voting restrictions. Their response to their 2020 loss is to keep on making it harder to vote, while repurposing the same lies Trump employed as fake-justification. This places additional pressure on Democrats to work to expand voting rights wherever possible. And in Virginia, a measure just moved forward that will test how effectively Democrats can do this. On Friday afternoon, the Virginia Senate passed a new state-level Voting Rights Act. The measure passed the Virginia House a few days ago, and it’s on track to being signed by Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam. The bill codifies prohibitions against any voting rules changes by localities that result in the “denial or abridgment” of the right to vote based on race or color, and it empowers the state attorney general to challenge a change made by a locality if he or she has cause to believe it would have a disenfranchising effect. It also requires changes to be opened up for a long public-comment period, among other things." www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/02/05/virginia-voting-rights-act-democrats/

After Record 2020 Turnout, State Republicans Weigh Making It Harder To Vote "After an election that saw record voter turnout, with many of those voters casting their ballots early and by mail, some Republican state lawmakers are proposing a wave of new voting laws that would effectively make it more difficult to vote in future elections. The proposals come in the aftermath of the unprecedented onslaught of disinformation about the conduct of the 2020 election by former President Donald Trump and some of his allies in the Republican Party. "Some folks bring these proposals forward and say, 'Well, we just need to address confidence in our election systems,' when it's some of those very same people, or at least their allies and enablers, [who] have denigrated our election system by either telling lies or at least leveraging or relying on other people's lies to justify some of these policies," said Steve Simon, Minnesota's Democratic secretary of state, at a news conference organized last week by the Voter Protection Program. A recent analysis by the Brennan Center for Justice found that 106 bills have been filed by Republican lawmakers in 28 states that would restrict voting (the group also found 406 bills in 35 states that would expand voting access). Many of the bills would limit voting by mail, add new voter ID requirements, make it more difficult to register voters and give states greater leeway to purge voter files if voters don't consistently cast ballots in every election." www.npr.org/2021/02/07/964598941/after-record-2020-turnout-state-republicans-weigh-making-it-harder-to-vote

After Trump Failed to Overturn the 2020 Election, Republicans Are Trying to Steal the Next One This is the most concerted effort to roll back voting rights in decades. "Georgia Republicans have already introduced an avalanche of new laws that would radically limit voting options in the state. On Monday—the first day of Black History Month—Republicans in the state Senate introduced nine bills to restrict access to the ballot, including eliminating automatic voter registration, no-excuse absentee voting, and mail ballot drop boxes, as well as prohibiting third-party groups from sending mail ballot applications, and banning people who move to Georgia after the general election from voting in runoff elections. Many of the bills were sponsored by Republicans who backed Texas’ unsuccessful attempt to persuade the Supreme Court to throw out election results from Georgia and other states carried by Biden. These bills come on the heels of another bill that would require voters to submit physical copies of photo identification twice to vote by mail, once when they request a mail-in ballot and again when they return it.... the GOP seems determined to weaponize Trump’s lies about voter fraud to suit their own political ends after the state voted for Biden and sent two Democrats to the US Senate. Raffensperger, who became a liberal darling for standing up to Trump, has endorsed calls to end no-excuse absentee voting and add voter ID for mail-in ballots. “I will not let them end this [legislative] session without changing some of these laws,” Alice O’Lenick, the GOP chair of the board of elections in Gwinnett County in suburban Atlanta, which Biden carried by 18 points, said last month. “They don’t have to change all of them, but they’ve got to change the major parts of them so that we at least have a shot at winning.” O’Lenick’s statement shows how the GOP’s true goal isn’t enhancing election integrity but rather curtailing Democratic turnout to keep the state from turning bluer, especially with a rematch between Republican Governor Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams likely in 2022. “This unhinged set of voter suppression legislation,” tweeted Fair Fight Action, a voting rights groups founded by Abrams, “appears intended to appease conspiracy theorists like those who stormed the Capitol last month.” " www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/02/voting-rights-republicans-trump-georgia/

same source: "In Pennsylvania, another state where Republicans spread baseless claims of fraud in an attempt to overturn Biden’s victory, legislative Republicans have introduced 14 bills to make it harder to vote, among the most in the country. Like in Georgia, they want to repeal no-excuse absentee voting, which all but two Republicans voted for in 2018. The main sponsor is GOP Senator Doug Mastriano, who attended the Capitol Hill rally on January 6 that incited the violent mob at the US Capitol. Republicans also want to reject mail-in ballots that don’t arrive by Election Day, throw out ballots for minor signature errors, and eliminate a list of voters who automatically receive mail-in ballots.
They are also fast-tracking a constitutional amendment that would gerrymander the state courts—so that judges are elected from districts drawn by the legislature instead of through statewide races, giving Republicans far more control over them—after the state supreme court overturned gerrymandered congressional maps drawn by the legislature and blocked Republican attempts to undermine ballot access before the November election. Democratic Governor Tom Wolf, who cannot run for reelection in 2022 because of term limits, can block restrictive voting laws but the attempt to gerrymander the courts will likely go before voters during May primary elections.
A third of restrictions on voting this year target mail-in voting, according to the Brennan Center, but many go well beyond that. Republicans in New Hampshire and Montana have introduced legislation to repeal Election Day registration, which increases voter turnout by as much as 10 percent. Republicans in Alaska, like in Georgia, want to eliminate automatic voter registration, which was approved by 65 percent of voters in 2016. Republicans in Wisconsin, Arizona, and Mississippi have introduced bills to allocate electoral votes based on congressional districts instead of the popular vote winner of the state, which would’ve reduced Biden’s Electoral College margin by 11 votes.
Democrats will be largely powerless to block many of these laws through the legislative process in states like Georgia, Arizona, and New Hampshire that Republicans control. But with Democrats in charge of Congress and the White House, the party can pass federal measures like the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and sweeping pro-democracy reforms that could stop GOP voter suppression efforts."
If you care - VOTE IN LOCAL and STATE ELECTIONS!
And call Congress about enacting FEDERAL VOTING RIGHTS LEGISLATION.

Call, write, email, protest, donate, volunteer - as best as you can. (we live south of Phoenix, AZ, fyi...) we just got a mailing from the Republican party saying that restricting mail-in ballots will hurt disabled veterans and senior citizens, and for people to let their representatives know that they want to keep mail-in voting as an option. So why the heck does the Republican party need to campaign against-- the Republican party? Just... don't do it! it doesn't make ANY sense to me, any more.

" WASHINGTON, D.C—Republican lawmakers in Arizona have introduced a set of bills that would allow the state legislature to complete the final review of the state’s election results, rather than election officials. Versions of the bill have been introduced in both the state House and Senate, and would create a new special legislative session the Monday after Election Day where the Republican-led legislature would “review or investigate the results” and appoint presidential electors in a sharp break from convention. The move could essentially allow politicians in the statehouse to appoint their own presidential electors. State Senator Sean Bowie (D) is one of many Democrats and voting rights advocates to sound the alarm about the pending legislation: “Why even have a presidential election, why have voters vote on it if, essentially the legislature is going to be able to override whatever the voters vote for,” he asked Tuesday. Republicans’ effort to change the election process comes after Tuesday’s conclusion of an official audit of Maricopa County’s election results, which determined there was zero evidence of fraud or “vote-switching” in the state’s largest county. Versions of the proposed election change have been introduced in both chambers in Arizona, as a constitutional amendment in the Senate and as a bill in the House. If passed, the constitutional amendment would move to a statewide vote on the 2022 general election ballot. Read the amendments to S.C.R. 1006 here." www.democracydocket.com/2021/02/legislation-alert-arizona-moves-to-give-lawmakers-final-say-on-election-results/

Arizona Republican lawmakers join GOP efforts to target voting, with nearly two dozen restrictive voting measures A handful of the bills -- including two that would impose new restrictions on Arizona's popular vote-by-mail system and one that would limit its narrow voting window -- have gained momentum and could pass. They are part of a push by Republican-controlled legislatures in several states to advocate for strict new voting laws in response to Trump's false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. There are more than 250 bills in circulation nationwide, according to the most recent tally by the Brennan Center, an unprecedented nationwide effort to roll back voter access. The list of states includes Georgia and Texas, two other states with increasingly diverse electorates where Democrats have made recent gains, and Iowa, where Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a new law that makes it harder to vote early. Nearly two dozen bills that would restrict voting were introduced in Arizona this year, and several have advanced in recent weeks. The latest came Wednesday, when a state House committee approved a bill that would turn the state's permanent early voting list into one that drops those who skip consecutive election cycles. The list, created with bipartisan support in 2007, now features 3.2 million people who use it to receive their ballots by mail for each election and has helped spur a shift that resulted in about 80% of the state's votes being cast by mail. And on Monday, the state Senate approved a bill that would require voters to submit identification paperwork with their mailed-in ballots. Instead of the state's current system of matching signatures on ballot envelopes with voters' signatures on file, those voting by mail would need to provide affidavits with their date of birth and driver's license, state ID or tribal ID card number -- or would need to include their voter registration number and a copy of a utility bill. The same forms of identification are already required for in-person votes in Arizona. That bill hasn't yet been scheduled for a House committee vote. The Senate could also vote soon on a bill that would narrow Arizona's early voting window, starting it five days later and ending it early by requiring ballots to be postmarked by the Thursday before Election Day. Under current law, ballots just have to arrive at the post office on Election Day. " www.cnn.com/2021/03/11/politics/arizona-republicans-voter-suppression-bills/index.htmlWhen you can't win on issues, win on changing the rules of voting to make it harder for people to vote.
