I just finished Brene Brown’s book Dare to Lead and she has a section on core values and you identify two or three (because if you have more than that they aren’t core values they’re too diluted) here is the list: List of Diversity Environment Efficiency Equality Ethics Excellence Fairness Faith Family Financial stability Forgiveness Freedom Friendship Fun Future generations Generosity Giving back Grace Gratitude Growth Harmony Health Home Honesty Hope Humility Humor Inclusion Independence Initiative Integrity Intuition Job security Joy Justice Kindness Knowledge Leadership Learning Legacy Leisure Love Loyalty Making a difference Nature Openness Optimism Order Parenting Patience Patriotism Peace Perseverance Personal fulfillment Power Pride Recognition Reliability Resourcefulness Respect Responsibility Risk -taking Safety Security Self-discipline Self-expression Self-respect Serenity Service Simplicity Spirituality Sportsmanship Stewardship Success Teamwork Thrift Time Tradition Travel Trust Truth Understanding Uniqueness Usefulness Vision Vulnerability Wealth Well-being Wholeheartedness Wisdom Write your own: VALUES Accountability Achievement Adaptability Adventure Altruism Ambition Authenticity Balance Beauty Being the best Belonging Career Caring Collaboration Commitment Community Compassion Competence Confidence Connection Contentment Contribution Cooperation Courage Creativity Curiosity Dignity Copyright © 2019 by Brené Brown, LLC | All rights reserved | www.brenebrown.com/daretolead1/1 Care to share yours? One if mine is kindness and after identifying it I’ve managed to send an apology card to a friend I treated badly over ten years ago and on several occasions made decisions to treat others kindly simply because I have been focusing on it.

I read a Ken Blanchard book in the 90's that had you discover your values. I've done other exercises and mine have stayed mostly consistent:
Accomplishment Independence Creativity Responsibility (which is one I wish I didn't have)
and one that was added in a later exercise "Beauty."

I love Brene Brown, but I'm not sure you can only have 3 core values. In no particular order, and limiting it to 5, mine are:
Equity (not the same as equality) Justice (which includes compassion, by default, in my mind) Authenticity (which in my mind includes honesty and openness) Making a Difference Connection
So many more.. but I'll limit it to these 5.

Brene Brown always reminds me of the self help guru on Sex And The City that Charlotte dragged Carrie to. A bunch of words that end up meaning nothing.
ETA: I apologize, I shouldn’t be crapping on BB in this thread. She’s on of my few BECs.

Gratitude, Family, Equity
I've read several of her books and appreciate her frank approach to some of the things we like to avoid in life, like shame and imperfection.

Interesting thoughts to ponder. Thanks for posting, OP. I'll come back when I've given it more time to percolate.

How on earth are you guys narrowing it down to three or four? Serious question. Is there an activity you go through to help you sort through them? Or am I just scattered and diluted? 😩

How on earth are you guys narrowing it down to three or four? I read this post yesterday and I had to really sit and think about it. I thought about my thoughts and my behavior. I thought about my goals and my successes. And I chose based on thinking about those things.

I've been including a core values statement on my personal development plan at work for the last several years - it keeps me focused on what I look for in a job (it's less about title/pay and more about my employee experience):
Problem solving, collaboration, staying grounded, having fun.
If I can achieve those 4 things in the course of my work, then I tend to enjoy my job.

I had the same thoughts. I guess I looked at them strictly as what has been most crucial to my growth and that my qualities were “root” qualities that had offshoot qualities. Gratitude automatically invokes humility, kindness, service, love. Truth invokes honor and integrity, etc.

Personally, it is not possible for me to maintain a set of core values for an entire lifetime. My values change as life changes. There's also some values that come automatically for me, so having more than three wouldn't fell diluted for me. I don't know if that makes sense.
