I know that a lot of people have unmounted their wooden stamps to save space on storage. I have some that sit on IKEA "frame type" shelves in my craft room but I the time has come for me to use those shelves for something else and it looks like the only solution is to unmount them and get rid of the wood. They're just too big and take up too much space, and honestly I'm not scrapping or card making enough these days to have them sitting there unused. So I want to unmount them and store them with all my other stamps in fridge bins. I managed to get one off really easily, but it's not at all sticky on the back. My question is: After you take the stamp off the block, do you need to do anything else in order to be able to use them? I have a Misti and a Tim Holtz Stamp Platform but is there anything I need to do?

If you have ones that are really hard to get off the block try putting them in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds. It softens the glue and they peel off easier. For the ones that aren’t sticky I spread a thin layer of Aleene’s tack it over and over glue on them.

Eeks, I love my wood mount stamps because they're easy to grab and use. Good luck!

I use EZMount Foam to adhere the unmounted stamps. One side would adhere to the stamp and the other would grip onto a stamping block, like the clear stamps do.

I use a hair dryer to unmount my blocked stamps. I use EZ Mount Foam to back the unmounted stamps. I am always rearranging my craft room storage in order to accommodate MORE STUFF!

I use the Aleene’s Tack-It-Over-and-Over on the back of mine, but I heard that it was discontinued, so I don’t know if it is still available to purchase. If not, you can use the EZ Mount foam, but I think it works best if you eliminate the foam cushion and take them down to the bare rubber.
I took mine down to the bare rubber 5 years ago. No regrets. If I am using them on a stamp block and need cushion, I put a piece of craft foam underneath the card stock that I’m stamping on. I usually use my Tim Holtz stamp platform, however, and rarely need cushion. If I do need cushion, I can also use my stamp platform from Stampin’ Up.

Micheals, joanns, and Amazon are a few off the top of my head that I know still carry the Aleene’s over and over glue. I hope it’s not being discontinued.

Any "2 way glue" will work to create a reusable stickiness to mount to your misti or block. Tombow has one in a green-lid bottle - you let it dry and it stays sticky. Horrible for gluing die cuts onto cards, which is what I was told to buy it for - the glue that squidges out stays sticky forever - so I used up the rest on my unmounting project. I just drew squiggles of it on the back of the rubber or foam and let it dry.
I believe the EZ mount foam is if you get your stamp down to just the rubber piece, but I was able to save the foam backing from some of mine as I unmounted them, and the ones where I didn't I didn't bother. They seem to stamp fine but maybe it depends on the stamp.
Might be helpful to watch a YT video or find an old blog post to see the process more clearly if you are adding the EZ mount foam. I found a bunch.
Remember to switch your TH platform over to the rubber side if you have stamps with the foam backing on them.

I ended up having a few that were pretty stuck, popped them in the microwave and they peeled right off!

Eeks, I love my wood mount stamps because they're easy to grab and use. Good luck! I've kept them mounted for years because I prefer the impression with the wood block. But I honestly rarely (if ever) use them and I needed the space so off they came!

Thanks for the input everyone! I've used Aleene's tack it over as well as EZ mount foam in the past. I sure hope that Aleene's hasn't been discontinued, but that might explain why I haven't been able to find it at any of my local Michael's stores! I've seen it on Amazon.... I think I better pick some up just in case!
It took me all morning but I got them all unmounted, labelled and they're now being stored in fridge bins along with my other stamps! Feels good to get that done! Definitely should have done this a long time ago!

Did you mount them on to something and put them in pockets? If so, how did you mount them? Were they sticky enough to mount to something? Thanks!

I took them off the wood block and put them in an Avery Elle pocket with a piece of white cardstock. If the backing was sticky, I stuck the stamp to a piece of acetate so it wouldn't stick to the cardstock. This is the same method I use for storing all of my stamps.

Or zig glue, that can be used to restore cricut mats.

I was a stamper waaaaay before I started scrapping. We used to buy the rubber designs and then wood mount them ourselves. I’d spend days after a convention matching stamps and wood blocks. When I decided to switch I had a hundred or so stamps to unmount. I tried the Tack it Over and Over method but sometimes it didn’t hold. After a huge purge (less stamps to deal with) I changed over to the EZ Mount foam. I like it much better.

Or zig glue, that can be used to restore cricut mats. I use it to restore my mats, but I have never tried it on the back of my bare rubber stamps. The Aleene’s is much tackier and works well on most bare rubber stamps. However, there are a few stamps that even the Aleene’s won’t stay on properly, where it just peels off. For those, I think the EZ Mount would work better. The Aleene’s is just faster to use, especially when you are converting a lot of wooden stamps like I had to prior to our move.

I've used both the EZ Mount and Aleene's and I like both methods. The only problem with the Aleene's glue is that my bottle broke while I was squeezing it and the glue went everywhere. I don't have many rubber stamps anymore but the rest of the ones I have I've just kept on the block until I decide if I want to unmount them or not.
