Bring a couple of bottles of dressing as well. I would not dress a salad ahead of time anyway.

I'd bring 3-4 different kinds and let people use what they want. Including just plain olive oil

Unless it was a Caesar Salad, I would bring a few different kinds for people to choose from.

I would time it so the dressing goes on about 30 minutes before it's time to eat. I think salad tastes worlds better when it has time to absorb the dressing.

I would leave the dressing separate. Not everyone likes dressing! Or likes a lot... or likes A LOT... or doesn't like the same kind you do. Plus, unless you dress it at the very last minute, doesn't it get kind of soggy quickly?

The salad won't "hold" if you dress it before - and these days, it is probably too hard to predict how much dressing people want.
With that being said, if you needed to do it, put the dressing in the bottom, followed by the veggies/tomatoes/etc then lettuce and croutons on top. Don't mix until right before serving.

I think I may have told people to toss their own salad once or twice, but that may not be the kind of party (or salad tossing) to which you are referring.

I either take a caser salad and dress it right before serving Or I have a homemade dressing (olive oil based) that I take in a pretty glass jar.and toss right before serving. These are jazzed up salads. If I have kids in the mix, I will take a small lettuce only salad with al bottle of ranch in addition to the fancy salad.
i love creating post it's Santa Fe salad dressing. I do serve this on the side because it is dairy based. Plus the salad can be eaten plain or salsa only.

I'd take separate dressings as well - I much prefer to put my own on anyway so can appreciate why others would as well and, as others have said, not everyone likes the same thing - especially if it's the only salad dish on offer

It's almost more fun to read the thread with a dirty mind, as if a the responses are answering what I'm thinking of Tossed Salad. So, sisterbdsq, it was last month, not the other afternoon you tossed SO's salad?

I never put dressing on a salad before hand. I think it gets too soggy. If it's a sald with a specific dressing, I put it in a pretty container and put it next to the salad.

My husband doesn't like dressing on his salads. I know, he's weird. But because of him, I never put dressing on a salad. I bring an assortment - Italian, ranch, poppy seed, etc. - and let everyone dress their own salad.

Yup, put it in a pretty container all right. I thing I need to leave this thread, my completely inappropriate self if dying to comment on so much.

Most of the time I bring a salad that calls for a specific dressing like a yummy lemony kale salad that I make. In that case, I'll take the dressing with me and toss it right before we eat.

Unless it was ceasar or balsamic vinaigrette or something made specifically to go with that salad, I would leave it undressed. I learned the salad dressing on the bottom trick (justkallie lays it out above) from Barefoot Contessa - it works great!
ETA - I just read the rest of the replies and you other question. Greek: I would put that dressing in the bottom of the bowl and toss just before serving.
