So, being inspired by a youtuber who decided to make her own mini distress oxide pads by buying empty SU ink spots, made me think of doing something similar.
But being the ultimate skinflint I had an idea about how to do this on the cheap.
I could get a set of cheapy ink pads on Amazon. They're the kind that are meant to be used for kids' finger painting. They have a foam pad and the covers fit well according to the reviews.
My plan is to wash the color out of them and then use them w/distress oxide reinkers to make my own distress oxide minis.
OK my pea experts - what could/will go wrong?

So Ranger won't make the minis because the formulation doesn't work or something, right? What's the long term look out for homemade minis? I am genuinely curious. Days? Weeks? Months? I'd be wary just because of that. Even if you could make them on the cheap, if they aren't going to last / work like they are meant to, then it is still a waste.

Aside from the Oxide formulation issues steakgoddess mentioned, I'd personally be worried about how long it would take to wash the color out of the ink pads. Just seems like one of those things where the color might keep coming, which I imagine would be a pain! Idk how much the ink pads you're talking about are, but I found this listing for 30 empty mini ink pads on Amazon for $12. I think it would save a lot of time and hassle to do it this way! You might also be able to find some really cheap on AliExpress. If you like the oxides and this plan doesn't work, at least you'll only have spent $12 on the ink pads. If it doesn't work, you can always buy the full size inks after and you'll still (eventually) use the reinkers with them, so as long as you don't mind gambling a little bit of money on mini inkpads, it's not like the money spent on the reinkers would be a waste.

I recently bought severe Distress Oxides from Joanns for $2.99 with free shipping. They didn’t have the newest colors, but did have a good selection. To me, that’s a better option than all the work, time, and expense for something that might not work well and be frustrating.

Thanks peas. Great input. What's the long term look out for homemade minis? I'm not too fussed if I have to make them each time I use them (which for each color - isn't that often) If you like the oxides and this plan doesn't work, at least you'll only have spent $12 on the ink pads. If it doesn't work, you can always buy the full size inks after and you'll still (eventually) use the reinkers with them, so as long as you don't mind gambling a little bit of money on mini inkpads, That was kind of my thinking too. The reinkers aren't wasted. Only the ink pads for (as you said) a few bucks. Distress Oxides from Joanns for $2.99 with free shipping Part of my issue is space, that's why I don't want full size - even at a good price

1. So personally I think in the end you will be wasting more ink, but if you have no room, you have no room. But do really have no room? Are you planning to have all of the colors?
2. If you have to make them each time because the ink dried up, won’t it be chalky and therefore gritty when you add new ink? Well I guess that might not matter because in the end the project is chalky anyway.
That is all that popped in my head.

If the Oxide formulation worked in the mini format, Ranger would already be selling it for $2.99/each or $11.99/4-pack!

Also if you have no room do you have room for the Re-Inkers Ooh, good point! Also, my concern would be how the re-inkers would work on foam pads? The Ranger pads are high density felt, rather than foam.

OK. Wanted to report back on my weirdo idea. I got a set of 20 ink pads meant for kids' finger painting. My plan (as above) was to wash them off and then use reinkers. BUT I thought "maybe just use them up first?" So I tried using them to "ink blend" w/some daubers and some glycerin - which someone mentioned on another thread AND I also saw on YT recently. I did two versions - a heavy-handed one on the right and a lighter-handed one on the left. Then I made a card out of one of them. So far, I think they look pretty good. Could definitely use more blending, but the daubers were new and I think they'll work better after they've had some of the pigment in them. I'm excited to try other color combinations. Suggestions? Also, for those who might use glycerin to help w/blending, do you think you need to spray the daubers/ink pads w/alcohol to avoid bacterial growth? I did a quick spritz on everything, but I hope it doesn't hurt the ink/paint on those little foam pads.

The cards looks great
I do light green to sky blue for back grounds a lot. Like grass on the lower part sky in the top. Some times just blended and sometimes with a horizon line going across. And sometimes I’ll throw a little orange/yellow in between for sun rise/sun set
