Just wondering. A lady in my town runs about 10 different Facebook groups. Right now there is tons of drama on her restaurant reviews group because she has decided to change the group’s rules to only allow positive reviews. She’s scrambling to keep people in the group as new groups start.
Just wondering if she makes money on all these groups with thousands of members each.

I don't remember where or in what context, but just recently I read about a Facebook group that was sold to some company. So there must be money in it somehow. I'm interested in the answer, too. If anyone knows about it, it's the peas

It really does seem like a ton of work for nothing, so it just made me wonder.

I just read about a woman who makes money by charging men to be in a group that’s advertised as a women’s only breastfeeding group.

I’m in marketing — and unless there’s a new function, you don’t make money running a FB group.
Of course there are indirect ways to make money through it, such as affiliate links or using it in a demand gen strategy (like getting earned media opportunities or brand association).
But nothing direct!

There's a guy in my town that runs probably 20 different 411 type groups. He has a God complex and kicks everyone out who doesn't agree with every single word he types. Last I heard, you could ask for reviews or suggestions on business to use, handyman services, etc but the only responses you will see are from the companies/individuals who paid him $60. If I commented and said that Roofers Inc replaced my roof and it looks fantastic and has a great warranty but Roofers Inc hadn't bribed him with $60, my reply is deleted and the admin guy would reply with how awesome Houston Roofing is and leave out the part about how he knows nothing about them but the paid him $60 so obviously they're fantastic. I try to stay off all of his groups.

Thanks for all the information. Definitely makes me think. I don’t know if some of the local restaurants are paying money for “advertisements” on the group because there are tons of posts about the same ones all the time. Now not allowing negative reviews, makes me wonder even more.

I don’t see how just running a group would make you money unless it was somehow a function of a business.
I have friends who represent direct sales companies with FB groups.
Then there are people like Paige Evans who use a Facebook group to promote their products or services (classes).
I used to be in a local group run by a guy who used the community group to drive traffic to his business page that derived income through advertising (the more views he got on his videos, the more he can charge local businesses to advertise on his “network”)

My neighborhood group was like that - it was mostly due to only getting one side of the story and a raging negative review could hurt the business and may not even be factual.

There was a woman running a restaurant FB group in a neighboring town. I guess she was sort of a control freak and would delete negative posts at business's request and contact commenters to remove their bad reviews. She threatened to just shut the group down but then said she would keep it running and contacted local businesses asking for compensation for what she does as admin--namely share their posts, delete negative comments. So basically, Pay to Play. Could be something along those lines?

Here the big thing is for a realtor to start a group about the goings on of a town. I don’t know how they monetize it, but every single one of the “[City Name] Living Local” type groups is run by a realtor and new subset ones continue to pop up as more realtors try to get a piece.

I run a large FB group for my company, but it's a spin off of our business page. You CAN make money using affiliate links, but you have to disclose that you're doing that. FB does have a paid group feature, but you'd definitely know if you paid to be in a group. I personally think many people do it for the drama 😂

We have a local group where the person who runs it makes money from “sponsored ads” - companies pay her to advertise their businesses. She’s upfront about who she advertises for and allows other companies to promote themselves on “small business Saturday” and doesn’t delete other recommendations when people are asking for the best plumber etc...

there are ways. i'm in a donation group, for example, where the mods are "tipped" 10% of everything donated. so, a person in need will make a request for say $50 for this carseat they need or something. people will find them in dribs and drabs thru paypal/venmo/cashapp or whatever, and they pay $5 to the mod that approved their post.

Im in a similar group- nothing negative allowed, the 3 people who run the group are constantly posting to the point that I think they eat out every meal, and the same 5-10 restaurants are constantly suggested.
