Interesting to me. I would never have dreamed that a hoverboard would be welcomed in the Amish community.

Very cool!
I was surprised with the hoverboard but also the golf cart and the buses that bring them.

A few years ago we visited the U.P. in MI. We live here but have never really spent any time in the U.P. So we spent a few days driving around and seeing things. I was surprised to see several Amish/Mennonite groups at each of the places we visited, including our hotel one night.
The one group we saw must have been less strict as one of the men had a digital camera and I think one of the women had a flip phone she was using to take pictures. But they were dressed in the long, solid not bright dresses, hats etc.
They all seemed to be having a good time. The group at our hotel had a mini bus with a driver.

I don't understand how a bus, bicycle, golf cart, etc., is permitted. Do they get permission to go on these holidays where their rules change? They were colorful outfits and have fun in the sun and surf. Wow!!

The article said that each group has its own rules and regulations. I guess I'll compare it to the Baptist groups that I have a little familiarity with. ...some allow dancing, others do not. Some allow smoking, others do not....and so on.

Some wonderful candid photos in there. Although it bugs me that the young men seem to have the freedom to wear "normal" clothes while the young women still look like they're living in the 1600s. I was surprised when she said the boys in the photo at the beach were Mennonite or Amish, dressed just in boardshorts and no shirts on.

Some sects of Amish and Mennonite drive cars — but might not permit chrome trim and details. And most do ride bicycles!

Those photos look like the mennonites we have around here. I'd say we have 3 different groups. I think of them as old order, middle, and modern. The old order only use horse and buggy, wear plain clothes (both genders). But the modern mennonites use cell phones, dress in clothes you'd see at the mall with limitations (girls in long skirts and covered shoulders but if the clothes come from a store that's ok), drive cars, use credit cards. The photos from Florida look like the middle ones. They attend public school wearing their mennonite clothes (colourful dresses, prayer caps), stop attending school around age 14-16 when they start working. I'm told they have a phone in their house and some drive cars.

part of the boys's freedom is that they probably have not yet formally joined the church..you make the decision as an adult and they don't follow all the rules of the church

Mennonites are permitted to use technology and motorized things.
Amish can hire transportation, just not drive it themselves.

Love it! We hired some Amish men to put a metal roof on. We had to call the business owner between the hours of 2-4 pm on a certain day. He has a little shed at the front of his property with a phone and works in his “office” on the day. The crew has a driver with a truck and trailer that brings them to the worksite and returns for them at the end of the day. My husband spent a lot of time talking to them and really enjoyed it, they were pretty funny. On the last day we ordered pizza for their lunch and they loved it. They do get pizza and restaurant food sometimes but for the most part that eat what they grow or raise on their farms.

Lynette Yoder, on You Tube, is a Mennonite living in Sarasota,Florida. Guess she’s in the last group. The only thing different about her is her hair and she wears long skirts and dresses. Other than that you wouldn’t know she was a Mennonite.

DH's grandma and all previous generations before her were Mennonite. When she married his Grandpa, they went to his Baptist church. DH has always been interested in his Mennonite heritage. They keep crazy detailed genealogical records, rivaling even the LDS. There's a database where you can put in any two Mennonite people and it will tell you how/if they're related. It's fascinating. He's on a Mennonite Facebook group and there are only so many surnames. You can look at a total stranger on the group and just by the surname and knowing whether they're German or Prussian/Russian Mennonite, guess if you're related to them and have pretty strong accuracy. Out of the clear blue sky the other day, DH said, "How about when the pandemic is over, we go to a Mennonite church?"

What a fascinating peek into a life that outsiders seldom get to see.

So amazing! I've been fascinated with the Amish for years -- and always from that humanity perspective.

When he first mentioned it, he was talking about changing churches and I wasn’t interested in that. But for a visit, yes I think. Though I never ever seen Mennonites “in the wild” around here, there’s quite a large church not too far from here so visiting would be quite accessible.

For about 20 years a Mennonite congregation rented worship space from my church. The members would not stand out from the crowd of the general population in Dallas.

Other than that you wouldn’t know she was a Mennonite. I've seen her channel, she has such a stylish home. There some Mennonite's north of me but they are not a large community, they have modern things and just dress plainly. Here we have quite a few Hutterite colonies. They use modern technologies, brand new farm equipment, cell phones for practical reasons, but not things like tv or clothing, equipment that helps their work life.

I am always fascinated as well with the Amish/Mennonites... I think though once I heard their dog breeding practices has left me a little black cloud over them. There are very very few of them in Colorado, really if any.

Pinecraft is very charming. It's right in the middle of other English neighborhoods. It's fasincating to me. They have a really nice Amish owned hotel there now.
