UGH I have posted before about them trying to get appointments for the vaccine, and their time ran out. Yesterday, my sister (who lives next door to them) took them to the ER. They have been sick for a week, and unfortunately, my sister was out of state visiting her son's family. My parents didn't tell anyone how sick they were, and when she saw them yesterday, she was shocked by what bad shape they were in.
They gave my mom some treatment called BAM, or BAM BAM? She has a slight pneumonia, but they sent her home. My dad has fluid in his lungs and is in congestive heart failure, so they admitted him. He is on oxygen, but not a vent. Just oxygen through his nose.
I feel so terrible for them. They are in their 70s (dad is 77, mom is 75) and they both have health issues. My dad is diabetic and has heart disease, and my mom has rheumatoid arthritis. The other thing that makes me feel bad for my mom--it's time for her Humira injection that she does twice a month, and they told her she can't because of the treatment they gave her. So she is also having an RA flare and can't have her Humira until next week.
My dad is so upset being in the hospital all by himself. I honestly don't understand why they can't let my mom be there with him. They both have Covid, so what harm would there be?
And now, my sister has to be in isolation because she was in close contact with my dad for 8 hours in the ER. Her sister in law stayed with my mom all day, but she is a nurse in that hospital.
**Update 3/1 Thanks for all the messages everyone! I have been away for a few days. My parents are doing better. My dad went home Saturday night. My niece is there helping them--she had Covid in January. So far, my sister is testing negative, thank goodness. She has been in isolation since the day she took them to the hospital. Fingers crossed she doesn't come down with it. She is the caregiver for her disabled husband, who is bedridden unless someone helps him. She does have a 13 year old son who helps, but he is in school. Thankfully, my niece is there to help as well. (My parents live next door to my sister) Thanks again for all the messages!

She does have prednisone that she keeps on hand in case she has a flare before it's time for her injection. She isn't sure if she can take it now...she has a call into her rheumatologist to ask.

I am so sorry they are sick. Hopefully your dad will be able to go home soon. It's such a terrible time for someone to be in the hospital.

I am so sorry they are sick. Hopefully your dad will be able to go home soon. It's such a terrible time for someone to be in the hospital. It sure is. And he was just in the hospital almost 4 weeks ago for an appendectomy. Even that sucked having to be there by himself. (He was there for 4 days)

Glad your mom was able to get BAM (Bamlanivimab), it is proving to be very effective at reducing the severity of COVID.
I hope your dad recovers quickly.

I honestly don't understand why they can't let my mom be there with him. because of all the potential people who she can infect on her way in and out and around the hospital. Surely you can understand that they don't want someone with known covid going into the hospital? walking around the ward, potentially going to use the bathroom, getting a coffee etc. It's not to protect her, it's to protect everyone who still has to go in to the hospital, as a patient or to work and they don't want people with known covid just walking around putting everyone else at risk. We currently have zero community cases in my state, and we still screen everyone coming into my hospital, they have to sign in, register with the QR code and indicate that they don't have any symptoms - a 'yes' to any single symptom means they don't get let in the door. Having a ward with covid patients is totally different to letting people with active covid come in and out of the hospital as visitors, surely even a non-medical person can understand that.

I am so sorry. I hope your dad responds quickly is back at home with your mom in no time. Do you think they can get the vaccine while in the hospital now? Or do they need to wait a specific number of days after being sick to get the vaccine? I feel so fortunate to be getting my first shot in a couple of days. I had been checking the website at least a half a dozen times a day trying to get in somewhere.
I'm also very sorry your mom has to be in pain due to all this. Can she get a temporary prescription for some pain medication to tide her over?

I'm so sorry they're ill. I'm glad your sister took them in. pjaye beat me to it. She can't visit so no one else is exposed. Besides, she has to concentrate on her recovery too. Think about all the compromised patients and all the staff that could catch it. We all know this virus is so, so very contagious. No one likes it but we have to be as safe as we can.

I'm sorry, I really am. It sucks to be far away from them and it sucks that your mom can't take her meds.
Not staying in the hospital, though, makes sense. I think our hospitals, doctors and nurses are already so overwhelmed, right? If you don't have to be there, you shouldn't put another burden on them.
Your poor sister, though. Man. It's a lot. I hope everyone gets through this with the least amount of pain.
