Y'all need to move to South Carolina. Sure, there are areas in the state with inflated prices but not my smallish size city.
We paid right at that price for 3500 sq feet on 4.5 acres with a small creek in the backyard in an older HOA neighborhood. It's mid-century modern with soaring ceilings and huge windows. Two screened porches - I have six sets of French doors leading out. Built in grill and burner on the back screened porch as well as a hot tub. Beautifully landscaped salt water pool with a rock wall surround and gazebo/pool house to the side. Lots of basement space both finished and unfinished. And my laundry room is 17 feet by 12 feet with three closets, big floor to ceiling windows on one wall, a sloped ceiling, and two skylights -- no lie. It's huge. My favorite room in the house. Lol. I run my Etsy shop out of that room. Previous owners renovated the kitchen and three full baths on the main level. I love my house and am tickled pink that we only had to pay what we did. Anyone want to be my neighbor?

I live about 10 miles north of Minneapolis in a lovely suburb. Most homes in my neighborhood go for $350k or so. My house is 2500 SF, 4 bed, 3 bath, 2 car garage.
Like the others said, I don't know how you can afford to live in Seattle or Melbourne!

I'm not sure what our house is worth, around $250,000. It's a 40 yo 1350 sq ft plus basement, fully reno'd, on a large lot. For $350k in town you could get a new (5-10 years old) up to 1700 sq ft. Friends just sold their acerage; $429,000 house specs about the same as mine 40ish years old, 1200 sq ft, basement, reno'd, old garage, new shop, 10 acres of land. My sister bought 32 acres with a 30 yo 1200 sq ft house and basement 1 km from town. Place was a bank repo, was badly outdated, they got it for $239,000 and put about $50,000 totally redoing the house, almost everything themselves. For $350,000 you could buy a quarter of farmland (160 acres).

In the DC metro area $350k might get you a small condo, maybe a small town 900-1500sf, no land. And probably a little more space the further out you go. The close in burbs can start at triple that price for a house without a big lot.
As to the OP’s link it looks like it’s being sold as “extensive renovation or rebuild.” Wonder what the comps are in that neighborhood?

You can get a pretty nice house here for $350,000 in a really great city with wonderful schools too. Property taxes are in the $7000 range. www.har.com/homedetail/4228-evergreen-dr-friendswood-tx-77546/13587974We bought our house in 2004. It is 2500 square feet with a pool that we put in. We are on about a 1/4 acre on a cul de sac street with no back neighbors. Our house is appraised for $285,000 right now and we remodeled the kitchen and bathrooms last year. If we were to put it up for sale we would probably list it at $350,000-$375,000. We live in the suburbs south of Houston and have a great school district which is another great selling point.

You could buy an empty lot for that in my small semi-ruralish suburban city these days. Property values have risen considerably since we bought in 2012.

I'm always shocked by housing prices in other areas. You can buy a nice home in Fort Worth, Texas for $350,000. Here is a link to houses between $300,000 and $400,000. Fort Worth Texas houses

In my area, it's rare to even get a tear down for $350,000. This house is being sold as a tear down, for $385,000. The lot is just over 8,000 sq ft. More than likely a developer already in that neighborhood will purchase it. The new house will sell for around $1 million. You are paying for the very close-in location with short commute times to several office areas. However in the suburbs (good if you work WFH or don't mind the commute) you can get a 3,000+ sq ft house, on a larger lot for the same amount of money (or less).

Same here in Denver. There was a house that was 1/2 burned down in a very sketchy area.. no land or anything to speak of.. it was near $500,000 and that was probably like five years ago. It's silly stupid.

This home is in Minneapolis. I figured it would be comparable to a home in Seattle. But this is a little gem. It's so cute! Mpls bungalowThose look like wicked steep stairs to the second floor.

In my area $350 is a pretty common price point. They shouldn't be that much, prices have increased dramatically the past year. But, buying one is difficult, they are snatched up for over the asking price by cash buyers as soon as they hit the market.
My DS is looking for a place and there is nothing in his price range. He can't even find a condo. Everything is moving so fast.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my DH this week. We live in the midwest. He was saying, "Oh, the median price of a house in our city is $40K." I looked at him funny. I said, "Maybe, maybe 20 years ago. Certainly not now." The next day I came and looked it up. Median price for a family home in our town is $176K. I sent him the info and replied, "$40K might get us an outhouse down by the river."

These threads always mess me up. I picture all of you living in McMansions that cost a million dollars. It makes me wonder just what kind of wages everyone must make to be able to afford such homes. Either that or I wonder if people are just mortgaged up to the eyeballs. Ha, not us for sure! 2 story, 2400 square feet in modest neighborhood on tiny lot purchased new 12 years ago before prices went up quite a bit. Not me either. Single story, 1600sq foot 3/2 home we bought 16 years ago. And I’m not ever moving.

This isn't in my town, but it's the closest that came up with houses in that price range. It's not the best area and I wouldn't feel safe living there as a single woman without a big dog AND an alarm system.

I just did a check. I'm north of Seattle and there are no homes listed for $350,000 or under. The only two listings for under that price were raw land: 2.4 acres for $234,000 and less than .5 acre for $123,000.
That's it.
A new neighborhood is being built next to ours. The homes have a great view of the valley and are nice, but nothing spectacular. Prices are listed at 1-1.3 million.
Out of control. And the sad part? The neighborhood is not going to sit empty. People are going to buy and not even blink an eye at the price.

Ahh, y'all are killing me! I've been looking at moving back into a SFH from my condo, thus why I was on the real estate site. I'd love to stay in the greater Seattle area, but am not finding what I want, so I opened up the search down to a price of 300k so buildable lots and tear downs would show up in my search. I am hoping more properties become available as we get into spring and more people are ready to put their homes on the market. Everything crossed.
That said, I spent several months debating if I wanted to stay in Seattle or move elsewhere. Decided to stay here, but boy is it tempting to head somewhere where housing prices are less.
ETA: 8 years ago this month I bought a 2 bed, 1.5 bath condo in a coveted neighborhood, in a modern building for 316k. I've since bought a different condo and have been living here for almost 4 years, but that gives you an idea of the housing increases in under a decade.

There is nothing in my zip code under $350k, houses/condos otherwise.
I was watching Love It or List It yesterday in a waiting room, and couldn't believe the houses that were generally $575k. Massive. Huge lots. Etc.
There are three listings under $575k in my zip code- all are 1b1b condos under 900sf.

You can get quite a bit here in our midwest burb. This one is not far from me: 3 car garage of course the third garage is to make up for the lack of storage and basement ( a no go for this midwest girl. I refuse to look at a house without a basement. Our first spring as a married couple taught DH why too).

As people have started working from home because of Covid companies are finding that to work well. It is cutting costs for office space. Consequently rents are falling in The San Francisco/Silicon Valley because not as many workers have to live close to work. At least that is what I have been hearing. I think what we will see from this is prices dropping in those areas and going up in other areas that already have affordable prices.

Anyone want to be my neighbor? My DD and SIL would have loved to stay in South Carolina. No teaching jobs for the newly graduated Ph.D, so off to New York they went over the summer. Thankfully to a rural area where house prices aren’t ridiculous. And they’re both military brats, so they’re really adaptable. The housing market is highly inflated in my area. Our old neighbors just sold their house for $25,000 more than we sold ours a year ago. Their lot size is half the size, a couple hundred square feet smaller, and more important to me, 1 bathroom to the 3 in our old house. It reminds me of when we moved here in late 2006, when the market was once again inflated, with terrible times to come. Of course we were lucky enough to buy top of the market due to a military move. Took years to get any value back. Too bad we couldn’t have waited a year to sell, could have done with at least $25,000 more. ETA- we bought our current house for around $350,000 nearly a year ago. It’s 4500 sq.ft, 4 bed 4 full bath with an 8 car double garage. One side is vaulted with a car lift, hence why we bought a bigger house when we were trying to downsize more. Basically we have a pole barn that DH wanted for car/building projects while I got the still in a neighborhood

Is downtown Seattle really minutes away from Seatac? Is anything minutes away from Downtown Seattle with traffic? Absolutely not. Google maps says it's 14 miles south - calculates it at 23 minutes.
This does NOT compensate for the hellish traffic that occurs on I5 or HWY 99 between Downtown and Seatac. You'd be lucky to get there in less than an hour...more likely you'll get there in 2.
I hate Seattle. It's not the place I grew up in anymore.
