My boyfriend is an attorney with a small firm. They are pretty casual. They merged a while back with a larger firm. Next week is “picture day” for everyone, so they can have some photos for the website, I presume.
He was originally told to dress “sophisticated casual”, but no tie. Now they are saying they’ll do one photo with a tie, and one without. He is a very casual dresser, and frankly I’m not entirely sure what the firm is looking for. We are going shopping tomorrow, and the photos are next week. I’ve been out of the corporate world for over 5 years now, and I’m looking for some guidance. I guess I’m thinking a nice button down or something, with a tie, but I don’t want to steer him wrong. I didn’t really get much direction when I Googled. He’s 50, if that helps. Chicago-ish area. Help me dress my guy, please!
I’m heading to bed soon, but will check in tomorrow morning, in case there’s questions. Thanks!

Honestly, I think he should ask at his firm exactly what he is expected to wear before you go shopping.

Does this larger firm have employee photos on their website? See what’s been done before.
I think sophisticated casual, at a law firm in the Chicago area, is probably a button down but it’s a trendy color or pattern (gingham seems to be in) and well-fitting (that’s the key). Even a basic-colored shirt can look sophisticated if it fits well. Maybe a sweater over the button down. If they want one with tie and without they might be expecting a suit jacket or sport coat. I would go to Nordstrom and ask for help.
Oh, and have him buy new shoes. Good, stylish shoes can make a big difference in his overall look, even though they won’t be photographed.

When someone says "sophisticated casual" for the office, this is what I'm picturing. In the first photo, he could swap out the jeans for twill navy pants. Either option would work with a tie.

I think you've already got some good advice and I'm just here commenting that I am hoping this turns into a "hot dressed up dudes" picture thread. 😄

i would say nice shirt and sport coat as pictured above, but it wouldn't hurt for him to ask what is expected.

I would say that it should be a real dress shirt instead of a button down. I think a buttondown shirt might be a bit too casual. A real dress shirt that is well fitted and in a flattering color elevates the casual to "sophisticated".
