I'm sorry for US Peas who've known and grown up with Michaels. I can't really express an opinion on how this will affect the stores or their longevity. All I know is that US scrapbookers have a loving set of grandparents and their names are JoAnn and Michaels.

Interesting. The article said they are buying it because their valuation has increased, but it is less than it was when it went public, if I read it right. But they've been impressed with how they've handled the pandemic... But the pandemic is (please please PLEASE) hopefully winding down. Hmm.

There’s one a mile from my house and it’s so nice to just hop on my bike to grab a couple of things I need (this was pre-pandemic) and during the pandemic I’ve used their curbside pickup which has been great. I truly hope this firm doesn’t kill it off.

them taking away the good coupons and accepting competitor's coupons did it for me. i used to go in there at least once a week. in the last year, i may have been in there only 3 or 4 times during that year.

I didn’t like when they made all the shelving higher and it started to resemble a warehouse. Who are you kidding how many crafters do you think can reach those higher shelves? If no one can reach them what is the point? It’s not like you have employees around who can get those things down Although I do like the instore pick up, which they had pre pandemic I hope they keep that. If they’d find a way to put the clearance items on that they’d get way more business lol

But you shouldn’t have to, unless you work there. 😉 I just thought it was a weird way to go in an industry where seeing an item can go a long way to securing the purchase. Especially impulse buys.

I want to hope this will be a good thing, but I doubt it is. I went into Michaels for the first time in months and my store was just empty. Those slider racks were gone completely so that was good.

According to the article, Michaels has only been a publicly held company since 2014. Prior to that they were also owned by private equity firms. So hopefully going back into private equity hands won’t be too bad. I am more concerned with the fact that my local Michaels has gutted the paper crafting section almost completely. Tons of paper and stickers removed, huge clear out sale of stamping supplies, no new stock for Spring . But there are lots of seasonal and general crafting supplies, several aisles for food crafting, vinyl cutting, etc. And of course, the ubiquitous framing section. I am glad I can still buy scrapbooking and stamping products online

Just the other day at an At Home store, an older lady asked me if I was tall. I just responded yes and I'd be happy to help. I guess I never think about not being able to reach things. Stores need to put in those pull out steps at the bottom of their fixtures.

It happens literally every store I go to (or at least when I went into stores). I honestly don't mind reaching the top shelf for people. And yes, it does seem kind of ridiculous to have things so high up.

Not all PE firms are bad, but they definitely are profit-driven. I'm very curious to see how this plays out for Michael's. I don't know how profitable paper crafting is.

I am glad I can still buy scrapbooking and stamping products online I think this is the time of year many retail stores do inventory. It makes the process (scanning every.single.item in the store) easier when they actively clearance stuff out and delay shipments before inventory so there is less merchandise to scan. Hopefully they will restock by the end of the month.

Even if they bring in more paper crafting supplies, there is no longer space for them unless they add more aisles

Another thing that drive me to Hobby Lobby and Joann. Their paper section has given way to a huge party favors section. Thanks no.

If there is anything that this pandemic has brought about with AC shrinking designers, TM completely screwing their craft aisle, M's reducing their papercrafting further (I only really shop there when the hot buys are on for $5 or before the pandemic when they were 70% off and there was an extra 20% off coupon running), etc. is that it will make a lot of people who overbuy supplies feel good about having a cushy stash.

I rarely go to Michaels for crafting. Their lack of brands other than their own and their slow product turnover keep me from shopping there. I did pick up a nice display case (labeled for sports memorabilia) though to use for a few knickknacks. They’re also good for artificial flowers. I hope this works out well for them. I also hope they don’t have a massive layoff as sometimes happens in an ownership change.

They had about 10 things total in Hobby lobby from his one. Most were inks. I had to go to Amazon.

I rarely go to Michaels for crafting. Their lack of brands other than their own and their slow product turnover keep me from shopping there. I rarely go there anymore either. I pretty much stopped before the pandemic when the hot buy paper pads weren't appealing to me anymore. The few times I stopped in during the pandemic there was never anything new. Sometime last year I finally tried tape jungle for my atg refills and now I really have no reason to go to Michael's. But I feel bad for people who and this turns out bad for paper crafters.

Michaels has gone downhill in the last several years.
They never have enough cashiers. Usually one, on occasion two. If asked to call for a backup cashier, they act like your asking for a million dollars. The long wait in line to checkout is a huge turnoff for me.
They've had the same stickers and single sheet papers for years.
Now they've done away with the 40% and 50% coupons and are no longer accepting competitor coupon.
I very rarely shop there anymore. If I do, it's to check out the seasonal decor.

IMHO the big box stores, regardless whether privately or publicly owned, will continue to lose papercrafting customers until they return to carrying name brand supplies (with or without offering substantial coupons). Most customers have access to the internet, are aware of options via online retailers/YT videos/here, & are no longer limited to whatever is available in brick & mortar stores. How many customers are willing to pay the same retail price (without coupon) for a big box house brand as a name brand (often with samples &/or YT instruction for its use found online) of any supply?
I’ve only walked into Michaels during the last 5 years if a store was nearby when waiting on an appointment, & the only items I’ve purchased during this time were VersaFine Clair inks on clearance for $2/ea last month!

No deep discount coupons = I no longer shop there. Simple as that. Their Canadian prices were such on almost all products that the 40-50% off coupons brought it down to the normal retail price. It wasn't even a discount. Now? Heck no, why would I pay double for their poor selection? We don't even get much in the way of good clearance deals up here.

I ran into my Michaels the other day, looking for a basket. I was surprised to see they had no baskets and where the baskets used to be, now it was all scrapbook storage (like Ikea furniture. the stuff you have to put together). They used to have lots of wicker and metal baskets but nope. All gone.

They used to have lots of wicker and metal baskets but nope. All gone. I was just posting in the other Michaels thread, I think they're doing a major reset, making space for fabric and a cutting counter, which can be a big space hog but drives a lot of business to Joann. I think they've eliminated some pretty big categories of stuff. I'm not sure if every store is getting fabric but I think they're making some pretty big changes. btw every thrift store I go to has crazy quantities of baskets. I will never buy another basket new after seeing what they have. Hope you find what you're looking for.
