I ran into my Michaels the other day, looking for a basket. I was surprised to see they had no baskets and where the baskets used to be, now it was all scrapbook storage (like Ikea furniture. the stuff you have to put together). They used to have lots of wicker and metal baskets but nope. All gone. I was just posting in the other Michaels thread, I think they're doing a major reset, making space for fabric and a cutting counter, which can be a big space hog but drives a lot of business to Joann. I think they've eliminated some pretty big categories of stuff. I'm not sure if every store is getting fabric but I think they're making some pretty big changes. btw every thrift store I go to has crazy quantities of baskets. I will never buy another basket new after seeing what they have. Hope you find what you're looking for. Oh I hadnt seen that about the fabric. That would be nice. I didn't find what I was looking for. I was wanting to match a basket I had bought there but no baskets. It all worked out though. I found two matching baskets in my attic and will use them.

A few years ago, They bought up our local and very beloved craft chain here (Pat Catans) and gutted them within the year, and simultaneously raised their prices. Iâve been in Michaelâs 2x in 3020, and not at all this year.

My Michael's scrapbooking selection has been awful for years. There is never any new product and what is left just keeps shrinking. Their open stock paper selection has been the same for at least two years. I do, however, buy a lot of other craft supplies there (especially acrylic painting supplies) and I have noticed that the sales are not as good as they used to be. It's still worth it though to have an actual store you can just pop into to pick something up and not have to wait for shipping.
I did notice recently that those ridiculous sliding racks were gone on the sticker aisle. Thank goodness.

I swear that when I lived in San Angelo TX back in late 80s-early 90s our Michaels store was called Ashleys. Same font for the brand name. Cannot find anything googling it. Anyone else shop at âAshleys?â

Well that would suck if Michaels goes away. They came into Canada and killed nearly all the small craft businesses. Though lately the coupons have sucked.

Does anyone have a link to photos or a video that showcases how Michaels used to be when they were a scrapbooker's dream?

Anyone else shop at âAshleys?â In Houston at the same time frame, we had Michaels and MJ Designs. IIRC, they were the same family members, started Michaels in Dallas, who split and opened their own stores? MJ Designs had more stuff to be honest, and I was sad when they closed.

Research the company that bought them. Michaels is screwed. The companies that they (Apollo) buy often end up bankrupt, I am very familiar with their practices because they destroyed a local production facility leaving thousands in our region without a job.

Michaels has gone downhill in the last several years. They never have enough cashiers. Usually one, on occasion two. If asked to call for a backup cashier, they act like your asking for a million dollars. The long wait in line to checkout is a huge turnoff for me. They've had the same stickers and single sheet papers for years. Now they've done away with the 40% and 50% coupons and are no longer accepting competitor coupon. I very rarely shop there anymore. If I do, it's to check out the seasonal decor. I frequently get the 40% coupon in an email. Sometimes weeks in a row. Haven't seen a 50% off one for a while. Whenever they ask for a customer survey, I give them one and tell them their paper choices are awful. Hobby Lobby has had some of the same papers for years too.

I got a gift card to Michaels for Christmas. I've made an exception twice now to shop in store looking for something to spend it on (I've been trying to stay out of stores). I've walked out with nothing twice now. It's not the same store it used to be.

I went late on a weekend so the amount of people in there was very very limited.

Apollo Global Management. Be prepared for even more changes to the stores. My DH was working at the local âThe Fresh Marketâ (a chain of small specialty grocery stores) when Apollo acquired them in 2016. The stores were very nice. A large selection of specialty items from various vendors, no mass market items, the produce was all organic, the meat departmentâs was top notch, large selection of specialty and international wines, cheeses, a great deli, a small kitchen item gift section, bulk coffee and candy. They had baked goods from France. It was like shopping in a small international market.
Once Apollo took over it all changed. The floral section is all but gone. Just a few fresh flowers and some potted plants. They eliminated the bulk candy and most of the coffee (this was in 2016, so before COVID). The produce section has all but eliminated the organic line. They have removed most of the tables where they put all the baked goods. I think they are down to about 1/2 of what they used to have. The wine section has shrunk up. Jarred and canned goods, while the sections are still there, they are now carrying brand names like Campbells and Hunts, brands that can be purchased at the local grocery stores for a lot less money.
Everything that was special about The Fresh Market is no longer special. They have removed so many display tables from every section that the store looks bare. Most of the international products are gone.
It will be interesting to see the direction they take with Micheals. I wonât be surprised if they move further away from a Crafts and concentrate more on decor and other items that have a higher margin of profit.

I'd be okay to see some fabric, I believe they bought out Hancock fabric or their inventory and have been selling fabric online for a couple of years. Research the company that bought them. Michaels is screwed. The companies that they (Apollo) buy often end up bankrupt, I am very familiar with their practices because they destroyed a local production facility leaving thousands in our region without a job. This is what I suspected. I haven't heard any good things about Apollo so we shall see how long they last.

I noticed at least one aisle's worth of planner stuff had been clearanced out too. They had given planners so much space I'm not surprised it's on the decline again now. A lot of space for Cricut-related stuff, which makes sense - I'm assuming its coupon-excluded. I just saw Zooey Deschanel shilling the little Cricut Joy machine on IG. Seeing more of my cleaning and organizing channels on YT using cutters for their home dec stuff rather than papercrafts, and tbh I think serious scrapbookers are pretty low on Michaels and Joann's list of customers.

Even JoAnns is following the trend of no/less coupons.
And their prices in their scrapbook stuff is way higher than what the manufacturer suggests!

And they met on a Tuesday morning. In the lobby where they practiced their hobby! ...at the local scrapbook store. Everyone loves these Archivers, who record their Memories. This is what I come here for. (the whole quote didn't post, bummer)
