I was sent an email from Provocraft about an exciting announcement to be made this morning. It turns out to be a mug making machine. I am underwhelmed.

That's it? So not exciting at all.

Very underwhelmed, but I have to admit that I'm glad it's not a new cutting machine. I just bought a Maker in November, and I would be really disappointed if they came out with an updated machine now. Not that I'd buy it, but still.

Oh. Well, on the bright side, I always appreciate when I'm not tempted to spend money.

Mugs are already the most common and overused gift there is.
I honestly thought it would be another cutter, especially since they dropped the price (at least temporarily) on the Cricut Explore Air 2. I assumed it was being discontinued, and something else taking its place.
Not that I need another cutter, but I also don’t need a mug maker.

I’m shocked that Cricut thinks there is enough of a market for mugs. I guess if the price point is good enough, there will be takers. Not interested in that, but I would LOVE to get the Cricut Joy if there ever lower the price down. I haven’t seen it discounted at all.

When I think of all the great new ideas that can't get funding and then ideas like this get design, development, production, marketing & distribution budgets. Wow.

I think there is a good market for things to drink out of but not specifically mugs.

No thanks on the mug press! Not at the 199.99 price. I can get a full size 12x15 with cup, plate and hat accessories for $150 on Amazon!

I am not a mug person anyway so it doesn't interest me. Even if I made them for gifts, I think the $200 price tag is too high, plus you can only use Cricut brand mugs and of course Cricut infusible ink with it - just added cost. It is an easy pass for me.
I guess if someone has a business and makes and sells personalized mugs, it may be worth the investment for them.

I read a Cricut group on Facebook and it is a younger group. They're crazy for cutting vinyl to put on shirts, tumblers, mugs, and so forth. They also seem to love the "sublimation" process (which doesn't really seem to need a cutting machine that much...) They're excited about the mug press, although many of their heat presses have lots of attachments, including a mug attachment. They're having crafty fun, so you go, crafty humans.

Good for those who are excited about this machine and will use it, not trying to rain on their parade, but this is a classic Provo Craft move to me: release an accessory that already exists in some form (like the Cricut light pad, self-healing mat or Easy Press), but charge exorbitantly for it. Plenty of people who are invested in the Cricut brand will add this to their collection just because PC made it. I think you'd have to make lots of mugs to justify the price tag for this, since it's a single-purpose machine.

I've noticed this too - my SO's daughter is 30 and recently got a Cricut. She's gone bonkers with that thing and gave him a personalized water bottle for Christmas. I had the same response - you go, crafty human. There's a lot of joy to be had here!

Maybe a lot of people are going to start mug businesses after they buy this... to justify that price tag (ooof!) as a business expense... Just what the world needs - more mugs. (I despise straight sided mugs and dislike novelty mugs in general! After unpacking my SIL's mountain of mugs when she moved I became a mug hater. How many mugs do 2 people need?! )

But that doesn't mean plenty of people won't decide to start a Cricut mug home-based business selling on Fbk Marketplace and Etsy...

I despise straight sided mugs What do you prefer? I've never really thought a lot about shape. I do have a hand-made one that a friend made and it does have a more figure-8 kind of shape. I guess I do like it a lot. Do you mean the more bowl-shaped ones?

I guess I do like it a lot. Do you mean the more bowl-shaped ones? Anything curved or curvy or tapered is better than the regular generic white mugs that are the same diameter top to bottom. It's a bit irrational but I think they bug me in the same way that generic unisex T-shirts in neutrals/primary colors printed with cheesy jokes do. Just a waste of resources... I'm very picky about my mugs and my T-shirts! lol. It's stupid, I know. I'm sure no one cares but... I love this shape, about 6oz capacity, typical of NZ style flat white: My least favorite mug shape: http://instagram.com/p/CMBJFL2nDMK My current fav mug: http://instagram.com/p/B3LMvE7gW0B

Let’s face it I rarely use a mug. I prefer a travel cup. ( bucket ) It comes of liking a large amount of tea from each teabag. So use a teapot you say, teapots just let my tea get cold.
I really could start using the insulated carafe from the old keurig but the cover on the travel mugs keeps my dogs nose out of my tea whereas in a mug he feels free to sample my tea. And his nose is a bit gross
