Here is an example problem:
Check whether the given number is a solution of the inequality
11x ≤ x-7;9 Is it asking if the equation 11x ≤ x-7 is 9? or is ≤ 9? This is an odd number she is not assigned and the answer in the back says it is not a solution. Can anyone help me explain this to her so she can complete the section. It isn't explained in the text anywhere using the ; and the teacher randomly went back to chapter 1 to cover this half way through the year, unfortunately she was sick yesterday so missed some explanation and now I'm not helping her much.

well if you substitute in 9 you have 11(9) <= 9-7 so 99 <= 2 so the answer would be no it is not a solution because 99 is not less than 2.

It's asking whether 9 is a possible solution for the inequality 11x ≤ x-7, so substitute the 9 for the x in the equation to tell whether the inequality is true or not. (It's not, but your DD will figure that out, LOL!) |

Oh. D'oh. That's what it's doing? The number after the ; is the value to substitute for the variable? Holy smokes. I don't know what I am thinking tonight. Thank you!
