Here is an example problem: Check whether the given number is a solution of the inequality
11x ≤ x-7;9 Is it asking if the equation 11x ≤ x-7 is 9? or is ≤ 9? This is an odd number she is not assigned and the answer in the back says it is not a solution. Can anyone help me explain this to her so she can complete the section. It isn't explained in the text anywhere using the ; and the teacher randomly went back to chapter 1 to cover this half way through the year, unfortunately she was sick yesterday so missed some explanation and now I'm not helping her much.

well if you substitute in 9 you have 11(9) <= 9-7 so 99 <= 2 so the answer would be no it is not a solution because 99 is not less than 2.

It's asking whether 9 is a possible solution for the inequality 11x ≤ x-7, so substitute the 9 for the x in the equation to tell whether the inequality is true or not. (It's not, but your DD will figure that out, LOL!)

Oh. D'oh. That's what it's doing? The number after the ; is the value to substitute for the variable? Holy smokes. I don't know what I am thinking tonight. Thank you!
