I thought some of you may be interested in this headline, as we often try to support small business & artists. I haven't shopped at Paper Source in years, but apparently they filed bankruptcy last week. The "story" is that prior to that filing they placed large orders with card makers (artists) and rushed dates so it would arrive before they declared bankruptcy to bolster their assets. Due to the nature of these types of orders with a business like that, a lot of these makers probably will not get paid or it could take a while once the bankruptcy settles. Can't even imagine how devastating that must be in a year/time as this one to a small business/artist. A local-to-me small business that owns shops with cards/gifts posted about it on social media because its the same makers they purchase their cards from for their stores. They have a post up which links to a bunch of the card makers if you want to try to support some of them directly with your business. Their instagram handle is @occasionette and the links of the card makers are tagged on the posted image. news.yahoo.com/paper-source-bankruptcy-squeezes-small-212236024.html

Unfortunately I've seen this happen before with one of the retailers I worked for back in the day. It's super crappy but not illegal.

Well, won't be shopping at Paper Source anymore... I will go check out the small businesses and support them if I can.

What an awful thing to do! Even if they eventually get paid something, that is of no use right now, when business is so difficult.

I saw comments from people who had accounts outstanding even before PS placed these big orders, and I think they’ll be even further down the list when the bills get paid, most probably won’t get paid at all. It might’ve been the post you shared that said some of the orders placed were the biggest orders these folks had gotten in a year, they were probably celebrating...
It really irks me that this isn’t illegal and we are expected to just shrug and accept it as if the rules are unchangeable. I have been using (and promoting by sharing every month for several years) a really cool calendar they make. This will be the last year and I won’t be telling anyone where I got it from now on. Not much else I can do, except find out if any lawmakers are trying to change these horrible rules, and doing my shopping with small businesses.

There was an update in this post. PS is offering to pay a small portion of the money owed if the makers commit to continuing to sell to them. And at the same time saying they feel like they’re being bullied on the internet. I think we can all see who is being bullied and who is possibly facing some consequences of their unethical behavior. http://instagram.com/p/CML8zD6h85Z

Thanks for the update joblackford. Unfortunately, I'm sure there is a possibility whoever is advising them through bankruptcy maybe told them to do this. I also did see the thing about it was the largest orders ever for some of these suppliers. It's just bothersome because we all know any creative business like this is already tough enough to make ends meet, then on top of the crisis of the last year where people didn't have extra money for things like greeting cards, as well as there not being events that warranted such purchases... It does seem like kicking them while they are down. This post above is just bonkers. I feel like "cyber bullying" is another phrase/act getting over used, much like cancel culture. If you did what you did and people decided to talk about it on the internet, it's not bullying, it's just stating the facts! I also don't like these "deals" they are trying to cut with the small business. Which I don't blame some of them for taking because they don't want to suffer further losses...it just seems like some type of mafioso strong arm move. Any corporation in this position should be consulting publicity experts before any more missteps. It does kind of reveal another, somewhat positive, advantage to social media, another david v. goliath exposed.
