We used to after dinner and get thrifty ice cream and I used to love the pistachio flavor! We still have a place that sells it and it’s pretty good!

i may have to get this for my kid's easter basket! where is thrify's? Ive never heard of that brand. Looking online it looks like they were a drugstore company 1919-1992. Now the Thrifty name and logo live on through Thrifty Ice Cream, sold in West Coast Rite Aid locations and various ice cream shops in the southwestern United States and over 200 across Mexico.

What is interesting is that as far as I know our Rite Aids (west coast) don’t sell the ice cream. Around here Rite Aid was Payless when I was little. The only place I have seen Thrifty Ice Cream counters are in the Rite Aids that used to be Thrifty.

Thrifty Ice Cream was originally made in Hollywood. The plant then moved to El Monte (calif) in 1976 and they have been making the ice cream there ever since. With the sale of Rite-Aid to Albertsons, it is unknown if the ice cream will continue to be made there or if Albertsons will move it to one of their facilities. Some are worried the recipe will change if Albertsons closes the El Monte facility. Albertsons does have its own brand of ice cream, Signature Select.

My husband's all time favorite ice cream is Thrifty's Cherry Vanilla. It has big chunks of maraschino cherries. If I am not mistaken Smart and Final sells Thrifty ice cream. I think he has bought it there before.

i may have to get this for my kid's easter basket! where is thrify's? Ive never heard of that brand. Thrifty’s was a pharmacy/convenience store, but they also sold their own ice cream. Way back, maybe when I was 7, a scoop at Thriftys was a quarter. Thrifty’s got bought by Rite Aid. My local Rite Aid still has a Thrifty’s ice cream counter. Ours too ☺️

The only time I have ever seen ice cream in store was the stores that used to be Thrifty, which were ones in California. I should check their site to see if any in Oregon sell the ice cream.

Ok, according to wikipedia they sell boxes of ice cream at some Rite Aids, but the scoops are only in the California stores.
I hope that they keep it the same with the merger. It is interesting that the factory also sells to Farrells and Costco.

I grew up going to Thriftys and always thought that was the coolest ice cream scoop. And in the video she has my favorite Thrify flavor-chocolate malted crunch. I haven’t had that in ages. My favorite flavor too! Always got it after a trip to the orthodontist!

Haven't ever seen this scooper. It sits straight on top of the cone she used for an example. Seems like it would fall off even easier than a round ball of ice cream. Strangely it stays on the cone really well!

To me their signature flavors are Chocolate Malted Crunch, Coconut Pineapple, Mocha Almond Fudge, and Black Cherry.

They only sold the cones that are more cylindrical than the traditional 31-flavors cone shaped cones. The cylinder that came out of the scoop fit perfectly in the shelf of the cones. Like a DQ or Fosters style cone.

My very first job was scooping ice cream at Thrifty!! So, I know that scooper very well. LOL! I am going to date myself, but, yes, scoops were 10 cents each. Chocolate Malted Crunch and Butter Pecan were the best.
Can’t you get Thrifty ice cream in Arizona? Maybe that was already mentioned.

But there is a Thrifty Ice Cream store in Rocky Point!

Here the Water and Ice stores sell it at a crazy high markup and a few restaurants have it. You can't buy it at normal retail or in a regular store.

No thanks, I want ice cream all the way down to the bottom of the cone! So now beaglemom needs to find us some Thrifty cones. Maybe someone will come back in a few years when they find them online!

I grew up in Highland Park. We’d walk from Luther Burbank Jr High down to the Thrifty’s and get an ice cream. I think it was five cents a scoop. I’d get two scoops, Rocky Road and Banana Marshmallow. I’d vary it up but those are the flavors that stick in my mind. Yum!

So today I was at our local mall and I ran into a small little store selling nothing but Thrifty ice cream!! I was gobsmacked! And then I was sent down memory lane as me and my DH tried to explain to our kids what a "Thriftys" was and what it meant to us. They where very disinterested as we had just come from having lunch at Cheesecake factory. And of course I know the rules....

How cool! I grew up going to Thrifty's to get ice cream. My dad would always take my sister and I there, it was so cheap and so tasty. I always got mint chocolate chip. To the pea wondering about the stability, you are right. If you weren't careful a misplaced lick would scoot your scoop right off the cone and onto the ground. That happened to me once when I was 3 or 4 and I cried so much. It felt like the worst possible thing. Ever since then, even now at 36, I get my ice cream in a bowl. It was damaging!

I’ve never heard of Thrifty ice cream. Was it a regional thing? Sort of an odd little scoop. Thrifty ice cream was made and sold by Thrifty Drug Stores, which was originally a Los Angeles thing. They grew, eventually got bought out by Payless Drugs and then by Rite-Aid. But the family held on to the ice cream and continues to make it.
