Years ago there was an ISO post on there and someone was looking for a scoop that worked like the Thrifty scoop. I came across it to today on Amazon and Rite Aid's website and wanted to post it here in case they were still looking. Thrifty's Ice Cream Scooper

I bought this for dh for Christmas. It really is a game changer if you’re in to ice cream.

I grew up going to Thriftys and always thought that was the coolest ice cream scoop. And in the video she has my favorite Thrify flavor-chocolate malted crunch. I haven’t had that in ages.

Thrifty was a drug store in California that sold ice cream made with California milk. They’ve used the same recipe for decades and those of us who grew up in California remember going in and getting a scoop for super cheap. Their signature was the cylindrical shaped scoop. That scooper has been patented forever and it used to be that you could only get it on eBay for over $100 when some old employee took one and sold it.

i may have to get this for my kid's easter basket! where is thrify's? Ive never heard of that brand. Thrifty’s was a pharmacy/convenience store, but they also sold their own ice cream. Way back, maybe when I was 7, a scoop at Thriftys was a quarter. Thrifty’s got bought by Rite Aid. My local Rite Aid still has a Thrifty’s ice cream counter.

Ah, Thrifty's ice cream, the best! That was our every day choice, it was .10 a single, .20 a double and .30 a double when I was a kid. When dad got paid we'd splurge on going to Baskin Robbins for sundaes and such, but for a quick cone, Thrifty's cones from that square scoop could not be beat. They consistenty won the blue ribbon at the LA County fair for years. When Thrifty Drug store got sold out Rite Aid cotinued to sell the ice cream, thank goodness. I had no idea they sold the scoop! I'll have to get me one just for nostalgia.

That was a treat, growing up. We'd go out to dinner and then for dessert we'd stop at Thrifty for a cone. The ice cream was so good and as oh yvonne said, who can beat those prices?

Ah, if those prices still existed! I remember a big bar of 3 Musketeers was a dime too. And a donut from the Helms Bakery truck.... I was looking for a good hostess gift for my gf who relocated out of state a while back. I'm gonna get her this, it's perfect. I think I'll add some fun ice cream goodies in the package too, fun! I swear this place enables me so much lol. Thank you for the post beaglemom !

That scoop is very interesting. I might get one for Dh.
We visited family in California once when I was junior high age and one night we got ice cream at a drug store. I don't remember much (I was 12-13ish) about it except for all of the adults talking about how cheap it was. It sounds like it was probably Thrifty's!

Loved going to Thrifty’s as a kid. I always got the peppermint, it was pink. Then we had the Red Dye 2 scare and my mom wouldn’t let me eat pink or red things. :-)

Haven't ever seen this scooper. It sits straight on top of the cone she used for an example. Seems like it would fall off even easier than a round ball of ice cream.

We had a Rite Aid and I remember taking the kids there for ice cream, but don’t remember the cylinder scoop. When eating, do you risk losing the scoop because it’s not anchored into the cone? Watched a couple of videos and each one showed having to help the scoop out by holding down the ice cream with your finger. Wonder how the employees manage without touching the ice cream?

They also should be wearing gloves, but I’m sure there are instances when they might forget. Our ice cream counter was right next to the checkout so these people were doing double duty.

I loved Thrifty ice cream when I was a kid. I loved their cake cones, as opposed to sugar cones. On Wednesdays, my Grandad would come to our house every week and he would take my sister and I to Thriftys to get a cone. The employees would pull the scooper out of a hot water container that the handle hung on the outside, and they'd scoop the ice cream easily. Our prices were .10 for a single, .20 for a double and .30 for a triple scoop. I never had a scoop fall off the cone. As you licked your ice cream, and it got warmer and started to melt a bit, the ice cream would push down into the cone. Their Mint Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Malted crunch were my favorite flavors. Now that I know that Rite aid sells their ice cream, I'll have to see if my local Rite Aid has some.

i grew up on thrifty's too so that scoop is a funky little reminder of my childhood. i used to be mesmerized at how they could stack the scoops of ice cream without them toppling over. you know, on those rare occasions we were able to get double scoops. at $.25 a scoop even!

I have a vivid memory of my grandpa taking me and my then baby brother to Thrifty for ice cream cones and we'd laugh at his shocked and delighted face when we'd give him licks off our cone. I live for memories like this! I always got Rocky Road. Except when I wanted Rainbow sherbet. We would visit and gather on that porch on warm summer days and sitting there eating bowlfulls or cones of that Thrifty ice cream my grandpa would always have stocked in his freezer. He'd get Neopolitan for me and that awful pistachio or coffee for him. Mint chip for grandma. That memory is intertwined with the sounds of cars honking down Whittier Blvd because Saturday was for weddings and it was an East LA tradition for the bridal parties to caravan down the Blvd with their tissue flower covered cars and go honking.

The really silly part of this memory about my Grandad, is that I had to walk to and from my Junior High school, which was a hilly mile each way. Not a huge deal at all, but the Thriftys was literally right across the street from the school. I would walk all the way home and my Grandad would be waiting in the car for me to get there and we would drive the mile back to get the ice cream. I could have just met him and my sister there! LOL I guess he thought I needed to walk off the calories I was going to get eating the ice cream!

Never heard of Thrifty's ice cream.
I'm not sure how I feel about cylindrical ice cream. I like the uneven surface. And if you are buying ice cream by the pint, it seems like you would only get one nice "scoop" and then it wouldn't be worth the hassle of cleaning that scoop to get the rest of the ice cream out (assuming one isn't eating the entire pint at a sitting)

I remember when a pint was $.99. During summer vacation, we would dig through the couch and search around the house until we got enough to send my brother on his bike to get a pint we would share. Usually it was pineapple coconut.

A few pizza places here and Water and Ice sell Thrifty Ice Cream. Because it's "imported" here (LOL), it's like $8 a carton.
I keep hoping that with the Albertson's merger, we'll get it in the grocery store here but no luck so far.

I loved Thrifty ice cream too, rocky road and what ever their coffee ice cream was called was my standard order. We didn't have it near us, only when we went to visit my grandparents. We would go to the big city, Mt Shasta, and the grocery store then off to Thrifty for our double scoop. I remember the first time my grandpa gave me 50 cents so my younger cousin and could go get our own scoop. I was probably about 8 and I remember whispering to my cousin not to hurt Grandpa's feelings because he hadn't given us enough. I assured him I had enough pocket money to cover the cost. Little did I know that 50 cents was plenty for both our double scoops.
I love that so many of us have such fond memories of Grandpas and Thrifty ice cream!
