Very interesting. Glad you shared this - I've learned a lot already.
(and do white women really call black women "sis" - that made me cringe.)

I’ve been called sis a time or two though it didnt bother me. Made my ears perk up but 🤷🏾♀️. The woman who does this introduces herself to all Black women using the same “script”. Complete with pulling an Octavia Butler book out of a bag. I could see that she was trying to find her footing socially and found it relatable I guess 😂

I could see that she was trying to find her footing socially and found it relatable I guess 😂 I had a friend in graduate school (white) who used to greet the administrative assistant in our department (Black) with "hey, girlfriend....." until the assistant finally said "only my girlfriends call me that..." OMG, you could hear a pin drop! So, the "sis" thing made me think of that - I have never, ever presumed to call anyone by a term of endearment unless I was offered it first. But I am horrified at myself - I did ask one of my daughter's friends about her Black hair - I literally broke every rule listed in that post. Every single one. Like I said - I learned a lot.

Keeping your emotions in check so Black people can express righteous anger is good allyship work. I feel like this is the biggest lesson the peas and white women in general need to take away from any anti-racist conversations. The centering, the misplaced anger, the tears etc. it doesn’t have a place in all this. I feel like almost everything has a touch of racial tension (hs sports, the bachelor, Royal family, politics, music etc) because we’ve ignored race relations for so long and didn’t prepare for the reckoning that had to follow. It’s here 🤷🏾♀️

Her page has great info! Thanks for sharing, following her now.
The post about "ghetto" names is especially poignant. A grad school friend had me in tears not long ago when she said she gave her kids non-African names so they wouldn't be judged for that too. The level of protections black women have to wrap themselves and their children in is heartbreaking.

My father was pretty big on respectability politics. My nieces and nephews all have names more reflective of their culture though so progress.

Both mulling over The Talk incident I guess! Glo will always say it better. I think that’s the other good self check of activism! Am I talking just to hear the sound of my own voice? Is someone else more equipped to have this conversation? http://instagram.com/p/CMe9IjCFlAb

Olan, thank you for sharing. I’m hoping everyone clicks that link and really listens, absorbs, learns. I really appreciated all of her posts but especially appreciated the sentiment behind her tone/tone policing post.

I've shared her Sharon Osbourne post. I don't watch The Talk or even really know much about it, but Sharon Osbourne yelling "EDUCATE ME!" was horrifying. I cannot even believe how calm Sheryl Underwood remained.

Didn’t want to start a separate thread but look at Brene Brown’s comments on Instagram.
What does that sound like to you?
