Hey! I just saw this thread now.
I support the recommendation to go to a dispensary and ask the budtenders working there, they will be familiar with the needs you want to address and the products they have.
If it was my mom, I’d probably recommend a capsule or low dosage edible. The government has this slogan — start low and go slow — and as silly as it sounds, it’s good advice. If I was starting with a THC edible, I’d work with 0.5-1mg dose, and do nothing else that day. The next day, try 2 mg. A lot of cannabis users find great benefit to adding a little CBD in with the THC (and reverse is true of CBD consumers), so finding a second CBD product or a balanced 1:1 product may be the way to go.
I personally wouldn’t start a new user off with oils, just because I’ve tried enough of them to find the taste and texture off putting. I do put my own weed butter into coffee or tea, but I really didn’t like using edible oil extracts I’ve purchased.
There are also lots of other edibles in different THC dosages and ratio — teas, gummy candies, mints, patches that dissolve on the tongue, beverages, chocolate bars. But in my experience these are all quite a bit more expensive than capsules. I’d start with capsules to figure out dosage and then maybe expand into other edibles to mix it up or for special occasions.

I put it in coffee and taste nothing. Just be careful because the marijuana taste can be unpleasant. Ashley knows what I am talking about! She’s the pro!

I just saw this thread because someone tagged me. Sorry guys, I'm coming off of a 3 day migraine so I haven't been here much. Judy26-I agree with TracyLynn. Go the the best dispensary you can find. You can find dispensaries in your area by looking them up in weedmaps.com Go to one, tell them all of the issues and the budtenders (like bartenders but with bud used instead) will help with choosing products and strains. If you don't get much help or the budtenders don't seem very knowledgeable choose another dispensary the next time. Most budtenders are good and really work hard and are trying to help their patients/customers. A chocolate brownie sounds great but I've never seen one sold here in MD. Each place Canada vs. USA and even between states will sell different products. Usually you have your choice of leaf (which can be vaped or smoked) solids or liquid cartridges (which can be vaped), solids (which can also be nail rigged or e-rigged), edibles, tinctures, lotions and topicals, drinks, and probably something I am forgetting or that they just came out with. Also here in the USA we can't order anything through the mail that has THC in it. We have to go to the state dispensaries. If she wants something for overall pain, to give her more energy, and to focus I would recommend a sativa over a indica. Sativa's usually wake you up and energize you and indica's usually slow you down, melt you into the couch. You wrote that she tried CBD and it didn't do a thing for her. I had the same experience. For me I needed the THC to deal with my pain. But with THC comes some of the loopy feeling depending on her body chemistry and depending on how high the THC is in the product. It all depends on her body chemistry. I have a very high tolerance to medication. Always have from the time I was 5 years old in an Army dentist's chair and I was telling him I could still feel the drill after the morphine and he didn't believe me. He just told the nurse to hold down my kicking legs and kept drilling. For me I can smoke flower with 18% THC and not feel a thing. For others they'd defiantly feel it. So as they say, start slow. The budtenders will probably start her at a very low THC to see how her body reacts. Also remember this: if you don't feel anything your body reacts slower too as far as feeling better-that's my theory I could be totally wrong. This is after having my card and using medical marijuana for 2 1/2 years. Feeling the effects of THC isn't bad. It's a very nice mellow feeling. It isn't like feeling drunk at all. I do realize she is 87 but if she is at home with someone supervising her she should be okay. I usually watch TV after I smoke. I wish your mother the best. Oh there's a great book I can recommend for anyone who has questions about this entire subject. It's called "Stoned: A Doctor's Case for Medical Marijuana by David J. Casarett I found it at my local library and it was such a great read. I feel so much better now about smoking flower (it's the best result I've gotten) because I now know it won't damage my lungs. I wish the best for your mother and if you have any other questions feel free to PM me. Are you a redhead? Redheads have a mutation that affects pain tolerance and meds....just curious No, I'm a brown haired girl. With pharmaceutical migraine medication I can take it for about 9 months to a year and then it stops working for me. I have the same problem with Lidocaine that I have with Novocaine. My dentist gives me double the Novocaine she gives most patients because I go to a great dentist now who listens and believes me. When I get nerve blocks with Lidocaine for migraine prevention from my neurologist she gives me double the dose she gives to most of her other patients because she believes me too. As far as medical marijuana goes I can no longer vape either the flower or the liquid cartridges because my tolerance is too high-I feel nothing when I do that. Smoking flower is what is still working for me so that's what I do. I wonder if I was meant to be a redhead?

I have a MM card (got it for anxiety and sleep). It's like being in a freaking candy store! I highly recommend that your mom use transdermal patches. I like Mary's Medicinals Transdermal Patches. marysmedicinals.com/products/transdermal-and-topical/They have ones with CBD only, CBD with THC (there's an entourage effect with having CBD and trace amounts of THC), CBN (inflammation relief, sleep). I use the Indica patch (this helps me sleep) but they also have a Sativa (energy, euphoria) patch. They are low dose over a long period of time so she won't feel stoned if she were to try the ones with THC. The patches are 2"x2." I cut them up and then place the strip directly on top of the foot on my vein.

So cool!!!

I just learned how to make edibles!

I love edibles but I had to lower my tolerance and now it takes a 16th of what it used to take me because I cut them so far back. I have plenty but they are for parties and coping through visits with friends who like to talk and talk. Have you been creative on weed before? It’s so cool! I have drawn, scrapbooked and journaled. It’s so interesting!

It’s so interesting! I have done nothing creative on weed! Played guitar once, but that was about it! I do think it's almost a truth serum for me -- makes me introspective on some of my fears in life -- what fears are outlandish, what aren't. I'm anxiety-prone if I'm too stoned, so some of those truth serum thoughts are paranoia. But for the most part, it just makes me have deep thoughts. Or giggles! will have to journal when I'm under the influence!

Yep, find a dispensary in your area. You will have an initial consultation with the Dr. and they will give you the best options for what her issues are. At any time else she would like to try something else, she will have to talk to their Dr. again. At least that is how it's set up here in MN when my Husband went on it 2 years ago now.

She should definitely do a hybrid- I wouldn't go sativa or indica to start. Try an edible with a quarter of the strength. They have ready made gummies that usually come 10 in a bottle- 10mg each. The have little meltway mints that you can get in 5mg doses. (this will all depend on the dispensary you choose as well)
I have mentioned before- My doc said to do RSO. It uses all of the plant and has the most health benefits. It comes in a syringe and its a sticky oil. He says to put the syringe in a cup of hot water for about 10 minutes- then squeeze it out on wax paper in rice size pieces and freeze. You can use a razor to cut them smaller. Wrap something to eat around the little piece and you have an edible. Most cost effective and better quality product.
