So my 87 year old mother has decided she would like to try MM. she has tried CBD and said it doesn’t do a thing for her. I helped her get her MM card for PA but I am clueless about what products would be best for her. She wants something for overall pain (everything just aches) something that might give her a bit more energy and focus and if it helps with some low grade anxiety that would be awesome. She does not want to feel loopy nor does she want it to make her sleepy. She sleeps fine now and other than the typical aging stuff she is in excellent health and only takes meds for glaucoma plus a vitamin daily. She has spoken to her doctor who is fine with her trying MM. Also she does not want to smoke or vape.
Thanks for an advice you might have. I’m in over my head with this one!

That said, if you take her to a dispensary, and she tells them all the things you listed that she wants/doesn't want - I promise, they will know exactly what to give her.
There are so many strains that do different things, and I've found the people who work there (I go with my Dad sometimes - it's a riot!) are super knowledgeable and able to direct in the appropriate directions.

That leaves edibles and tinctures (oil). Does she like coffee or tea? You can put drops of oil in a cup of coffee, not taste it and be feeling well in half an hour. Edibles you start out slowly. I recently quit them because I was abusing them and vape now.

I honestly don't know much about weed. That said, if you take her to a dispensary, and she tells them all the things you listed that she wants/doesn't want - I promise, they will know exactly what to give her. There are so many strains that do different things, and I've found the people who work there (I go with my Dad sometimes - it's a riot!) are super knowledgeable and able to direct in the appropriate directions. I agree - find the best dispensary in your area and go there. My friend had some chronic neck pain and had really good luck with just walking in an discussing her issues and the pros and cons of various options. |

My bestie's parents fell apart rapidly at the beginning of the pandemic. I took her down to a reputable dispensary and they helped her pick things that would help each of them. It has been a tremendous help with relieving anxiety, which alone is huge, but they found lots of things got better. I think it's busy that is a vessel of knowledge regarding things like this. |

She should go to a provisioning center and tell them what she is looking for. They will be able to make recommendations for specific strains and products based on her medical needs.

My bestie's parents fell apart rapidly at the beginning of the pandemic. I took her down to a reputable dispensary and they helped her pick things that would help each of them. It has been a tremendous help with relieving anxiety, which alone is huge, but they found lots of things got better. I think it's busy that is a vessel of knowledge regarding things like this. Thank you for starting this thread! I've been interested in trying some as well. My state makes it hard to get medical marijuana. As of right now, I think I'd have to travel quite a ways to get some. Definitely need something to deal with chronic pain too.

My gov’t knows full well there is a safe edibles black market and they just let it be so I can order through the mail. (Different country). Take your brownie and cut it into 6 or better 8 pieces and eat one square then don’t go anywhere for a while. If it’s your first it might make you feel wonderful or put you to sleep or both. I had chocolate fudge and I felt like a butterfly. |

I am envious of those of you that can use MM. My doctor told me not to since I am on time-released morphine and Vicodin for break through pain. My neighbor has used MM and tells me it could work better than the Vicodin and help me to sleep. I have awful insomnia, so the idea of just using an edible and sleeping a full night is so appealing. My doctor won’t prescribe anything for my insomnia either since I am on multiple meds. I think I need to discuss this with him again. Although, MM will be all out-of-pocket and my current meds are $10 each.

When DH tried it for appetite (didn't help him), there was a mandatory meeting with the pharmacist at the dispensary. They reviewed his needs and options. Then they sold him a variety starter pack. It had different doses and instructions on how to use them.
She should schedule an appointment to discuss options.

I just saw this thread because someone tagged me. Sorry guys, I'm coming off of a 3 day migraine so I haven't been here much.
Judy26-I agree with TracyLynn. Go the the best dispensary you can find. You can find dispensaries in your area by looking them up in weedmaps.com Go to one, tell them all of the issues and the budtenders (like bartenders but with bud used instead) will help with choosing products and strains. If you don't get much help or the budtenders don't seem very knowledgeable choose another dispensary the next time. Most budtenders are good and really work hard and are trying to help their patients/customers.
A chocolate brownie sounds great but I've never seen one sold here in MD. Each place Canada vs. USA and even between states will sell different products. Usually you have your choice of leaf (which can be vaped or smoked) solids or liquid cartridges (which can be vaped), solids (which can also be nail rigged or e-rigged), edibles, tinctures, lotions and topicals, drinks, and probably something I am forgetting or that they just came out with. Also here in the USA we can't order anything through the mail that has THC in it. We have to go to the state dispensaries.
If she wants something for overall pain, to give her more energy, and to focus I would recommend a sativa over a indica. Sativa's usually wake you up and energize you and indica's usually slow you down, melt you into the couch.
You wrote that she tried CBD and it didn't do a thing for her. I had the same experience. For me I needed the THC to deal with my pain. But with THC comes some of the loopy feeling depending on her body chemistry and depending on how high the THC is in the product. It all depends on her body chemistry. I have a very high tolerance to medication. Always have from the time I was 5 years old in an Army dentist's chair and I was telling him I could still feel the drill after the Novocaine and he didn't believe me. He just told the nurse to hold down my kicking legs and kept drilling. For me I can smoke flower with 18% THC and not feel a thing. For others they'd defiantly feel it. So as they say, start slow. The budtenders will probably start her at a very low THC to see how her body reacts. Also remember this: if you don't feel anything your body reacts slower too as far as feeling better-that's my theory I could be totally wrong. This is after having my card and using medical marijuana for 2 1/2 years.
Feeling the effects of THC isn't bad. It's a very nice mellow feeling. It isn't like feeling drunk at all. I do realize she is 87 but if she is at home with someone supervising her she should be okay. I usually watch TV after I smoke. I wish your mother the best. Oh there's a great book I can recommend for anyone who has questions about this entire subject. It's called "Stoned: A Doctor's Case for Medical Marijuana by David J. Casarett I found it at my local library and it was such a great read. I feel so much better now about smoking flower (it's the best result I've gotten) because I now know it won't damage my lungs.

Not even a glass of wine, even occasionally, without medical clearance. EVER! All my medical providers know I use cannabis. I was using too much and decided financially that it wasn’t necessary to consume that much. They knew what, how and strength. It was my decision to stop edibles. |

At this point, Mom is fighting to stay off any heavier meds, thought the ones she is on are already pretty heavy. She would absolutely try edibles if she had access. Vapes are out because of her COPD. Mom's pain management can't discuss MM with her at all, bu they've let her know they don't test for marijuana and they've asked for the specific brands and where they can be purchased for 'personal' use. Before Covid, the nurse asked Mom if she could introduce her to another patient and maybe Mom could share some of the things Mom had found worked for her...LOL It took Mom a bit to realize what the nurse was asking. The balms and tinctures are not cheap, that's for sure. The long lady who brings them to us won't let up pay her anything for going to the pharmacy just for us, but she has allowed me to send her a Starbucks card occasionally. Since you're in a MM state, I'd definitely have another conversation with your dr. You may want to research what drugs interact with it before your conversation. Take care, Marcy |

I personally do not recommend edibles unless they start with a VERY small dose. It takes a while to kick in and to get out of your system, and I know several people who were overwhelmed with the experience.

The inter-actions of alcohol and/or cannabis with medication is a delicate balance. I used to have the occasional, maybe 1-2 drinks/glasses of wine per week & felt fine. I was asked to stop completely and after 2 weeks I was amazed at how much better I felt (on medications). I haven't had a drink in a year and am still amazed at how steady I am. Your post sounded very judgy and handslappy of people who make different choices than you do. I am fully capable of managing my own mental health. I've been doing it for many years. I think before you decide to judge, you ought to actually know someone and how they manage their mental illness. I'm having a glass of wine with my dinner, I'm not self medicating my mental illness. I take all the necessary steps I need to in order to ensure that. I think this also comes down to a quality of life issue. I think that *every* single person regardless of whether they have a mental health diagnosis could benefit from total abstinence. You're choosing to pick on people with mental health issues in this thread. Many people are self medicating their mental health issues with substances. I would start with them before you make blanket statements about people who are actively working to manage their mental illness in constructive ways. I don't know your history. But I have certainly put on this very board enough info about mine. And the second post feels like a more targeted handslap. If my posts on this board haven't convinced you that I'm doing my God's honest best to manage my mental health then I don't know how to convince you otherwise. I have no issue going a month without a drink. I do it often. I also have no issue with having a drink when I feel good. |

I am not judging and am not being hand-slappy. I simply want to warn people that alcohol and "soft drugs" can have really adverse affects/effects (?) when you least suspect it.
I have/am dealing with mental health issues for many years, I simply don't post much about it. I was simply so surprised at the results of this study and having participated in this study.
I am going to go back into my little space. Life is a bit difficult right now. I thought that this information may have been some help to others. Sorry if I offended.

I was just contacted this morning and asked to make a video appointment before my second Covid injection. It will be with another doctor on my doctor's behalf, apparently. I am going to ask about using something MM topical. That hadn't occurred to me before. I have been having a great deal more pain in my neck area, which I was told was going to happen eventually due to the implant that I already have causing stress on the areas above and below it. And sometimes, like last night, that neck pain keeps me from sleeping. I couldn't find a position that supported my neck enough to lessen the pain. I have various rolls and pillows that I use, and I also have a special full-sized pillow, but nothing was working last night. I ended up getting up and taking a muscle relaxer and anti-inflammatory. Those eventually kicked in enough that I had a great long rest. If just massaging something into that area will be helpful, I'd pay out of pocket for it gladly. From all I have read on MM, it would deal with both my cervical pain and help with the anxiety and panic attacks from the fibromyalgia. I would be willing to stop taking the Vicidin if they would allow me to use something from the MM line. I am just so sick of being in constant pain. I love that the nurse is supportive of your mom's issues and even suggested she discuss her findings with another patient. Especially since your state hasn't allowed them yet. |
