Update 4/10 So it's been about 2 weeks that we bought a small ikea linnmon table and fit it in front of our bedroom window. Right next to it is a simple vanity that is acting like an extension to the desk that we got several years ago at ikea as well. Then I just have my 3 rolling carts in there as well and man, I have gotten so much done! I'm encouraged and feel a renewed sense of inspiration. My only problem now is the cats seem to think the desk is their spot to lay in the sun! 🙄 Thanks for the encouragement to take the leap to do it!!
******************************
A year into this mess and I figured out having everyone home and my good sized scrapping area out in the open between the kitchen and the living room is not working.
I just recently began to stay home full time, after working full-time+ since the start of the pandemic, recovering from some personal losses and still struggling with covid symptoms from having it in December. I thought I would be getting soooo much scrapbooking done, but with everyone home and my space in the common area, I am always interrupted! Or I get distracted easily, the laundry or dishes are calling me, or something! And it's so visible from where I am and I just can't close myself off since I'm not in my own room.
Now, my kids are older, all above 17, but it seems like me working so much in the last year and now being home full time has made them a bit clingy. They are great kids, and I understand the pandemic has taken them away from our super close-knit extended family, but man, I need a break sometimes!!!!
So my DH has been suggesting we get another table and chair and maybe another small shelf or something to make a small work space in our room for me where I can close the door and shut everyone and everything out. He knows how important my hobby is to me and my mental health and is really trying to help me out right now. But I just don't know if going between two areas is gonna work? I have all my main tools on a rolling cart, so that wouldn't be an issue, but I just worry about having to run back and forth as I have a very large stash. I basically have a large walk in pantry style storage closet full of stuff, a 4x4 kallax full of paper, and an L shaped desk with some storage underneath.
Anyone tried something like this to escape a bit during this crazy time?

Might I suggest shopping your stash for a project and finding a small home for any must haves (with room to grow just in case you find you're constantly looking for something that you didn't think of when you set everything up)?
I actually do more diamond painting than anything these days. In the way back before covid times, my daughter began pre-k at the elementary school and I just didn't like the folding table I was using for diamond painting taking up so much of the open space (my room is crammed full) in my scrapbook room. I also didn't like that I didn't have a screen in easy view, plus there were times when there wasn't much to watch on YouTube and my biggest wish for my craft space is a TV...but I don't have the ability to install one. I ended up getting a small Linnmon/Adils table setup from Ikea and butted up the desk in front of my dresser up in my bedroom so I could watch TV and diamond paint in peace while the kids were at school. The plan HAD been to simply move the desk out of the way when I wasn't using it, but that didn't end up happening because I use it so much.
We braved the task of wall mounting my daughter's TV (Christmas gift) in December, so we went ahead and mounted the TV to the wall in our room, too. We just slid the dresser down and moved the table up against the wall under where the TV was installed and it's been working great (about 2 weeks now). In the time I've been diamond painting upstairs (a little over a year and a half), I have added a second Linnmon/Adils table put on bed risers so I can keep odds and ends nearby, lifted a bit so I was able to slide a trash can and a Raskog underneath. It isn't quite an L shaped desk as I have an old Ikea Expedit 1x5 in the corner with the desks perpendicular to it on either side, but I really like the layout and it works great for me. We also had a spare Alex drawer unit from a desk we were no longer using, so I keep that as a makeshift nightstand and keep even more extra diamond painting stuff in there just a few feet away from my main work area. Only mentioning that part just in case you have other nooks and crannies in your bedroom to keep stuff nearby but out of the way.
I am absolutely sure this set up or something similar would work great for scrapbooking. You could fit 2 Raskogs under the table that I have (it's the small $9USD one that is being discontinued and the replacement line doesn't have this size but the next size up is only about 9 or 11 inches wider) and if you weren't aiming for cheap, you could also splurge on some of the adjustable legs that Ikea sells...at $15 each for the adjustable legs versus $4 each for the Adils legs + $6 for the bed risers at Walmart, I opted for the less expensive route even though the risers make the base of the legs quite chunky.
I'm not great at being descriptive but hopefully that helps. I hide in there all the time as my scrappy space is directly under my oldest 2 kids' room and my oldest loves to jump off of his bed and is heavy footed, which causes my anxiety to spike (no amount of politely asking or screaming my head off when I'm at my whit's end has helped curb the behavior). The master bedroom is the quietest space in the house and having that area of peace and quiet is something I have been thankful for MANY times over the past year...even if I do have to lock the door to keep the little ones out when even chit chat is just too much stimulation for me.

That is exactly the desk/ table I had in mind! Your set-up sounds kinda what my husband has in mind for me cause he keeps talking about going to Ikea to find not just the table but then "maybe another one of those shelve things". Little does he know those shelves just store my hoard and would only serve to help me shop more, not create!! 😂 I guess I'm just hesitant that I would spend too much time going back and forth for stuff, and wanted to hear from RefuPeas who had BTDT. But who am I kidding, it's not like I'm an epic scrapper who's gonna get tons done, I may just need somewhere to push paper around!! Thanks for your input, explaining your setup help make things a little clearer in what I'm thinking I may need.

I totally relate to your feelings - perhaps you're an introvert too?
I've definitely felt the need to look at our house and work out how I can re-arrange a few things to make things feel like there's more 'headspace'. We even moved my husband's office upstairs (he's a church minister) to make downstairs feel more like just our home. Things like that are really important to our mental health, as you say.
I like your hubby's thinking: he's lovely to think it through for you and recognise that you need this alone time.
I wonder if you could fill your trolley with the supplies you need to do specific projects? Perhaps you might need to do a little Ebay shop to duplicate some basic tools so you're not running between the two areas, but if you could pull papers, embellishments and pretty bits for a handful of layouts or one mini album, might that work?
I definitely feel that this is worth pursuing and trying to work out - our scrapbooking time is so much more than a productive thing... for me, it's about switching off the inner dialogue and worry and really investing in myself.
Let us know how you get on!

As scrapaddict702 suggested, it's a matter of building your "kit". You have the luxury of being able to build a larger kit than most people would for crops or very specific projects since you'll have quite a bit of space. You'll just need to switch your mindset to this approach. I'm a big fan of working with a limited stash. Contrary to most Peas, I live in a small city apartment I share with no extra room (where we've both been WFH since last March). My stash is housed mostly in my wardrobe and I pull it out when I scrapbook (on the floor of the living room, at my coffee table). Small but well curated can work really well as long as you build your workable stash well. It might take a bit of adjusting at first and yes, you may find yourself running back to grab the essentials you forgot but you should eventually graduate to this scrap approach pretty naturally. It's very intuitive and most importantly, it'll keep you sane and happy during these difficult times. Highly recommended! Let us know how you move forward and build your new setup if you do decide to go this way.

Heba with My Little Journal did a tour of her set-up and it's in her bedroom. It's a pretty big area, but there might be some ideas in the video that you'd like. I thought it was a neat way to set-up her space. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJBd_ZaC0pE&t=796sI am struggling with my space as well. I am WFH 2 days per week still and that will be permanent so now my office is in my scrap room. I find I'm not wanting to go in there lately. I need to rework the space but it's been hard to find the energy. I hope you feel better soon. COVID is the pits.

I worked this way for several years, shopping my stash from one space and then working in another space. You get into a groove. It's very do-able.

I have half my stash in the basement workout area. I scrapbook from one end of our LR. My paper is in the LR, but my IRIS cases with embellishments are downstairs. I just grab what I need and bring it up. When I have too much mess, I bring some of it back downstairs. I long for the day I have a proper scrapbook room with all my stuff in one place. But, it works.

I so understand the situation! I too am so easily distracted and it's not a bad thing but my layouts seem to need some sustained creative flow, they don't happen in 5 minute bursts. The online crops have really helped because I have people to talk to who actually keep me in my seat rather than encourage me to help them look for "x".
I've twice had to relocate to our bedroom during home reno/repair projects in the past. We emptied the bookcase and put the books into temporary storage to let me have a shelf. I used a laundry basket to tote stuff from the basement to my space when I needed a fresh assortment of supplies, but that laundry basket was not infinite - something had to be left in the basement if something new was coming up.
I had great success working from a smaller assortment. And I learned as I went - by the end, I realized what my "must have" items were better than at the beginning.
Good luck in finding some crafty space!

If IKEA is far check if what you want is in stock. Stuff, desk/table stuff, has been flying off the shelves at ours all year.
I’m sure you can gather ‘kits’ together to craft from your stash and do well that way. I used to have my craft stuff stored all around the house so if I couldn’t go get something I kept a note on the front of that ‘kit’
I had to have everything away back then at the drop of a hat so I made full page kits with papers embellishments photos and kept them in 12x12 envelopes in a crop instyle binder in various stages of completion.

What about something like this Pantry cart? Some even have fold out or pull out cutting boards to give extra counter top space. You can fill it with the supplies you use the most (all the time or for a particular crafting session) and wheel it out (or away into a bedroom or some other private space) to where you will be crafting. Then you can wheel it back when you are done. I have this one in my craft room for my Vagabond and dies and other diecutting tools and plates etc. It never goes anywhere---but it COULD if I wanted it to...

I can relate to this. Making a few kits helps, and if there are things I need from my big stash (it's always embellishments as I'vechosen the palers already), I try to make a sticky note, set the layout aside, and move on to the next one. I will finish up the page when I take it back to my main scrapping area, sometimes in batches (a few pages at a time). That way I'm not feeling like I can't make use of that "perfect thing" I have in my stash, and can move on to the next layout!
Remember too that this new setup for you is a journey, not a destination. You can tweak things as your system with this setup evolves!

I absolutely understand what you are saying! I very much have a scrapping set up right now like you describe, and I absolutely love it. Being in the right space (physical and mental) makes all the difference in the world, so you can work and have creative flow the way it works for you. I definitely make up kits, which is easy since the things are in the house, and I can preplan even days in advance when it works for me. I don't find I need to leave my crafting space much, but it works out well when I do and I love the freedom of being able to go grab something extra I didn't plan for. I highly recommend trying this, and I am glad your husband is a champion for giving you this space to create and have some "me time."

My space is in a shared office with my husband, who is now working from home most days of the week along with my daughter doing distance learning so I get little done in the shared office. I do like others have suggested, I have a project basket that has stuff that I want to work on and I "shop" my stash in the office. I have a small folding table in the living room that can easily be set up and taken down when needed and that seems to work well. I usually only work on stuff after my kid goes to bed because she will 100% be in my business and I don't get anything done. Our house is very small so there's really no escaping anyone.

Thank you all for the input, I think this is the push I needed to take the leap and do it. @susefish Yes, I am most definitely an introvert and having no alone time during this whole thing has been a problem and it is now amplified that I am home all day long. Love my kids, but they are a needy lot. And DH is a sweetheart, trying to make a difficult time as easy as possible for me. After 26 years together, he just keeps getting better and better! hop2 Thanks for the tip about checking Ikea stock cause they are an hour and a half away! I didn't think about that. I already have all my main tools on a raskog like cart as well as a 2nd cart I recently put together for mini album projects that are all half finished. I also have the larger rolling cart from Michaels with all my Thickers, the 2 bottom rows full, and then the top is letter stickers and other assorted stickers. So those can easily go between the 2 areas. I think putting together page kits and projects will work for me as well. Thanks for the input ladies, I am feeling better and a bit excited about this now that I hear from the Peas that it is doable! And my DH is gonna be so happy that he came up with an idea that might actually work...

Really hope this works out for you - good job for spotting the problem and working to resolve it. I've definitely found this time really hard in terms of not having my own space. I've been going on long daily walks just to get some alone time, but what I really crave is having my house back now and then

I need time to myself (which includes feeling like I have some sort of control over my surroundings) to recharge. My daughter starting pre-k full time versus the program we planned to enroll her into (she won a spot) at the start of the 2019-2020 school year was my first extended period of me time since my oldest was born...which had been nearly a decade (I'm a SAHM). The pandemic hitting completely unraveled all of the forward progress I had been making with my mental health through that school year. I often feel suffocated and overwhelmed at home. I LOVE being at home, but not with 4 other humans home around the clock, too. It's been hard as an introvert as there just doesn't seem to ever be enough distance to suffice. My husband does NOT understand that keeping the kids in a separate room isn't the same as an empty house (and the few times he tried that pre-pandemic, he always fell asleep and once he did, wouldn't you know it...the kids no longer stayed put, completely defeating the purpose which is why I said it wouldn't work to begin with) but after a year of going through it himself, I think he's getting there. I know how you're feeling and hope that you settle into a space that works for you and allows you some time to recharge from peopling until you can actually gain some distance (hopefully by the beginning of the next school year). My kids are returning (barring any complications like an abundance of school shutdowns due to positive tests) in April for all of 6ish weeks full time as they're all elementary aged and the only group being extended the full time option (my younger 2 have been back since March 1 2 days per week but my oldest is eligible for the April changes) and I can't wait for it to happen...even a few weeks before summer break would be huge.

I completely feel you on the introverted, overloaded with everyone home situation. Lots of good advice here. Just a couple thoughts:
1. Limiting your supplies can often jump start creativity. Try not to get caught up in the "I have the perfect thing downstairs" to speed up work, but to also prevent the interruptions you already have. Some of my most productive scrapping came when I worked out of two Rubbermaid bins and a mini tote at the coffee table.
2. If working in another room doesn't end up working out (or having scrap stuff in your sleep space is too distracting), can you put on headphones and tune out? I get a lot of reading and other "me" time sitting right next to my son with autism, but with headphones on.

I am currently in a situation where my partner is WFH, so he has taken over both desks in the office, and I lost any scrapping space close to my supplies. Now I need to shop my stash and bring it out to the kitchen table if I want to work. I echo what everyone else has said about making a kit. I used to do a lot of scrapbooking at my LSS, so that wasn't a difficult transition for me, but at least when I am working at home, I use what I have and don't buy more It might be different for you as it sounds like you will have access to your tools in your new space, but right now I break my scrapping into chunks. If I want to use my Silhouette, I will get that out one day and do my cutting for a bunch of pages, and put it into kits. And then the next time I will pick a certain collection or set of products and work with those. It isn't ideal, but I need the creative outlet to feel like myself so all the little workarounds are worth it. Enjoy your space!

I have been home alone exactly 3 times in the past year. The 1st time happened 4 months ago and I was in such awe of the lovely silence that I had to make a snapchat video of all the empty rooms and send it to my family and friends as I spun around like a scene from the sound of music!! The have all been for less then an hour, but they all felt like a small reprieve from jail. Unfortunately my DD is in high school and will be staying hybrid 2 days a week for the rest of the year and everyone else works varied shifts to where it never works out to where everyone is gone at the same time! I would kill for just one day to line up for them all to be out working and at school at the same time. But that doesn't seem to be in the cards for me. Enjoy your time hopefully if your kids go back!! 🤞

It is definitely nice to have the energy to actually sit and scrap for even a small amount of time where before it felt like a monumental task just to get out of bed. Even if this guy feels the need to "help". 😂

Congratulations on your lovely new setup, lostwithout2peas . I can't blame the kitties for trying to appropriate the new "platform to the sun" since they are the true masters of the universe, after all. I'm really glad to read your creative energy is bursting again and that you're getting scrappy things done. It's all that matters! Kudos to you for reaching out here for advice and then taking the leap.

To be fair, most of the "work" that was getting done was organizing stuff in the carts and some of the desk top stuff, but in my book that counts as scrappy stuff getting done!! 😁 It would have taken me forever or I would have never have gotten it done working in my old space. But now I'm rolling along starting to get some real work done now!

Yay! It's nice to see a desk looking crafty, and your light looks like a beautiful source! My cats get pesky too and it's really hard to be a meanie and move them! The light is great from the window except at a certain point of the day when it's coming in at an angle directly on the desk. Then I have to pull the curtain. No biggie cause mornings seem to be when I get the most work done anyways! And kitties are content to lay on my bed instead. Then we timeshare and they lay when the sun is hitting the desk directly, so we've learned to compromise....most of the time!!
