How does your family know when the dishwasher is empty and that they should go ahead and load their dirty dishes directly into the dishwasher???

I live alone now but when my family was here no one was allowed to load the dishwasher but me ... I'm very particular about how it is loaded

The dishwasher is emptied every morning & they know to load it whenever they use a dish. I run the dishwasher at night (if it's full).

when mum assigns one of them to empty it and the other to refill it. Otherwise the dishes sit in the sink until I see them and add them to the dishwasher.
There's a red light on the display indicating clean when the clean cycle ends

The front of ours is plastic so a magnet won’t work. A while ago I read about this system and we’ve been doing it for a while now with some success.
***As soon as the clean dishes are taken out and put away, immediately put dishwasher soap in the compartment inside and close the door.*** We use those little pellets so it’s easy.
Now when the family is standing there with their dirty bowl and spoon wondering, “Are they clean? Are they dirty?” all they have to do is open the door and look at the soap compartment.
Soap compartment open and empty = DISHES ARE CLEAN. PUT THEM AWAY. Put in more soap and close the compartment door.
Soap compartment is still closed = DISHES ARE DIRTY, CONTINUE TO LOAD UNTIL FULL. Once it’s as full as it’s going to be, that last person turns it on.
Now that we’ve been doing this a while, DH is fully trained in on the system. It’s taking our kid a little longer to get a clue but she’s not really a detail person. She’s usually the last one to put her dishes in and only half the time will she even remember to turn it on.

Apparently no one else in my house has the skills necessary to empty one, so I am the only one who worries about it.

They check the dishwasher. Or at least they're supposed to. But all of us are adults in this house now, so it's been years of training to get to this point, lol. Jen

Someone yells "Hey Ma! Are the dishes in the dishwasher dirty or clean?" If I had a magnet, I'd forget to flip it.

They open it and look. If it looks/smells clean, they know not to put dirty dishes in there. If it looks/smells dirty they know they can stick dirty dishes in there.

Dishwasher is always unloaded in the morning by my DH so all dishes during the day and evening should be loaded in the dishwasher. Dishwasher is started by DH when he goes to bed.
My three adult kids live at home and are in and out during the day and I’ve told them to hand wash any big dishes during the day. Nothing makes my head explode quite like coming home from work after a nine hour day to cook supper for everyone and not being able to put the dishes in the dishwasher because someone decided they needed to make cookies or gourmet cook their ramen and grilled cheese.

They don't. That is why they pile them up on the counter right above the dishwasher.

There is a green light on ours when it is running or hasn't been opened after it has run. You don't put dishes in when the light is on. It is my husban'd's job to empty it, so I just don't put anything in it if the light is on. It is run every 3-4 days.

It seems no one pays any attention to the lights, soap compartment, cleanliness of inside. It's just open it a crack and put whatever the item is right in the center of the top rack. Many times coffee is dripping down the freshly washed dishes, or it's opened in the middle of the cycle. I seriously don't know why it's so hard, yet it is.

We have a light that tells us the cycle is finished and the dishes are clean.
But that only works if you don’t open the dishwasher and take out one clean item and then close it again, leaving all the other clean dishes inside (the light turns odd when the door is opened). So the rule is - if the light is on and you open the dishwasher for something, you must empty everything!

if i am here, they crane their neck around the doorway and ask "is the dishwasher dirty?!".... if i am not here, they assume it dirty and leave them stacked beside the sink.
from this line of thinking, then one could assume if they check and are believing it is full of clean dishes - so they could, ummm, unload it. but nope.
even if is dirty and someone (through some act of random kindness) decides to unload it with no direction, they still unload the clean dishwasher and walk away, leaving all the dirty dishes that happen to be on the counter or in the sink... on the counter and/or in the sink.
however, i must say, when i assign the task (unload dishwasher, take out garbage/recycling/wet waste), they all do it in a relatively timely manner. so i count that as a win. they do take direction fairly well.

How does your family know when the dishwasher is empty and that they should go ahead and load their dirty dishes directly into the dishwasher??? Is this a trick question? People other than the “designated loader” (dad) are able to load the dishwasher?

They open the door and if the dishes in there are dirty, they put their dishes in. If the dishes in there are clean, they will dump their dirty dishes in the sink until I ask DS to empty the dishwasher. Same, but add if it is running they yell “whoops!” as water shoots out at them.

Someone yells "Hey Ma! Are the dishes in the dishwasher dirty or clean?" If I had a magnet, I'd forget to flip it. I laugh because this is my life as well, but seriously? How hard is it to tell? I am not so clean that I clean off all my dishes before they go in! My kids learned LONG LONG ago that woe be unto anyone who ignores the little red light that means clean on the dishwasher. They get a complete lesson in dishwashing from me. It takes longer than emptying it themselves.

we generally run it at night and I empty it as I make coffee every morning. no one is up before me. I expect them to check and not just leave the dishes. what does drive me nuts is after I cook dinner, I don't want to do anything with dishes. so I leave it til bedtime. and my dh can't stand it. but he loads it wrong often.. like he never read the manual.

We have two dishwashers, and one is usually dirty while the second is empty. Everyone just has to open to see which one can have dishes loaded into it, and when it gets full someone starts it, and then we move to the other one. We try to never have dirty dishes in the sink.
Side note: I LOVE having two. I really had to talk DH into it, but he agrees now that it’s the best thing about our kitchen. I’d take two dishwashers (which we use daily!) over two ovens (which we only use once or twice a year) any day of the week.

My husband and son used to give me that crap of "we didn't know if the dishes were clean or dirty and that is why they were not putting the dishes in. So, one night I called them into the kitchen. "I am going to tell you a secret that only women know. I may be punished for revealing this to you. But, when we want to put dishes in the dishwasher and are not sure, here is what we do. We open the door and look at what is in the racks--if food is clinging, we know the dishes are dirty, if all are sparkling clean, then the dishes are clean That is the secret women know. "
It stopped all that crap.

They open it and look. If it looks/smells clean, they know not to put dirty dishes in there. If it looks/smells dirty they know they can stick dirty dishes in there. There have been times when whatever we were eating had cheese or some other mess on it that our 2001 vintage dishwasher will NOT get off of the plates so they must be scraped and rinsed before they go in. That fact has confused several of the residents of this house, so therefore we needed to have a system. They look in there and see plates that *look* somewhat cleanish and wet, so they’re like, “Oh, must be clean!” Only when I look inside I see the gunky silverware, so I know better. Did I ever mention that my family members are not big on noticing details? They need something more obvious than that, LOL.

It's an age-old struggle, LOL.
Right now it's just dh and I at home, so this isn't problematic. When all of us were here, it was the job of the young'uns to unload the dishwasher. There had to be a direct notification of some kind, otherwise it didn't happen. Dirty dishes in the sink wasn't sufficient. A post-it note on the front saying "unload me" didn't help. What we ended up doing was opening the dishwasher and pulling out the racks partway.
I cannot tell you how many times I'd come home from work, come in the house through the garage, and then hear one or both of them running to unload. They'd just walk around the open dishwasher all day long-- and we have a small kitchen.
