Mine does not. We've only gone to him for a year and I'd recommend the guy to anyone. I would not feel comfortable in the situation you described and I certainly wouldn't want to do that each time. Now, there may be some issues that need to be taken care of, but I would expect my dentist to talk to me about them, nit a finance person I don't like it when the first mention of something is with the finance gal. It isn't always - but you're right. It should NEVER be.

I will add, however, that the dentists we have gone to here require you to pay for the service up front. So, they do have you talk to the front desk person about what the cost will be to you based on your coverage. That way you are prepared to pay for it either then or when the service is provided. I read through the OP again and those seem like services/devices that you should have talked about during your appt. Is that the case? Or did they just bring those recommendations up when you were ready to leave? I think that is the part I would be concerned about, not talking about the cost itself. This is an out-of-network provider. So I already pay a bit more. The first year I went, they did have me pay up front. I guess now that they know me, they send me a bill after the fact. For half of these services, i'm hearing about them for the first time with the finance gal. For the other half, the hygienist is calling the dentist to the room to point stuff out to me. But there is ALWAYS something extra - and that's the part that I don't like. Even with my kids. But you all are definitely confirming what I am feeling.

Not my dentist, but my previous dental hygienist. She was very good, but very pushy that I needed special toothpaste ($11 a tube!), a sealant for my teeth and fluoride treatment. She also makes recommendations to the dentist on which teeth I need to replace old fillings, treatment for my gums, replacing my crowns. She tells him and he says there's no need to do anything. I was glad when they switched me to a new hygienist. I have one old filling they are watching and that's it. My DH sees the old hygienist. The other week he came home with an expensive Water Pik she talked him into - for ME! It's still in the box because I'm irritated she did an upsell on him. She must get a crap ton of bonus money for everything she sells. GRRRR My hygienist was totally normal (not pushy) until the new dentist came along. I do think it's the dentist that made this happen in my office. I believe hygienists sometimes split time between offices. Maybe yours works for a dentist like mine on her other days. That water pik thing would have pissed me off. I would have returned that crap to the dentist ASAP.

I recently chipped my front tooth and called my dentist to get it fixed. He can't see me until Mid april....called one of the nationwide chains, got in quick and they tried to sell me 12k dollars worth of upsell. Said I needed invisalign, some kind of root scaling (not happening) and three implants. and BTW I still dont have my tooth fixed. FFS I foolishly went to a chain dentist (7 Day Dental for those who should be warned) in between good dentists. My dentist had retired and I did not like the new guy so dumb me went to 7 Day. I had some crappy dental insurance and they would take that particular insurance. They charged me $200 for mouth wash and I made the owner write me a check for that $200 when I realized what the charge was for. I also lost the tooth they worked on. The dentist did a horrible root canal that effectively destroyed the tooth. I ended up paying almost five grand to get an implant from a good dentist. I should have sued their ass.

Nope, my dentist is my daughter 😀. If anyone is looking for a new dentist in Oakland County, Michigan let me know! I went to my previous dentist for over 30 years and he never tried to upsell.

I've been going to my dentist for over 30 yrs. he does everything including all the cleanings. he is always looking to save us money.. so now that we have dropped insurance (we are retired)... he gives discounts for cash. he is conservative, is very gentle and though often running late. I am willing to wait. he works weekends too..

The only “up selling” our dental office has done is to make sure we know about services covered by our insurance. For example, sealants are 100% covered before their 16th birthdays so they made sure they reminded us we should get that taken care of before DD had a birthday.
I can’t believe some of these stories! I dislike going to the dentist, but I do like our dentist/office. I’m even more thankful for my dentist after reading what some of you have been through! If the finance person is presenting the information to you instead of a medical professional, then I would find a new office. It’s one thing if the dentist or hygienist mentions something that is necessary while you’re in the chair, but if it’s a laundry list of possibilities afterward? Nope. No way.

My daughter had a dentist who tried to get her to have preventative fillings. She had no cavities of any stage. The first and last time for that guy. Did they offer sealants or fillings? I got sealants in college and am very happy I did...filling in deep grooves in my teeth have definitely helped prevent cavities.

My previous dentist. Every appt....have you ever thought of vaneers? Invisalign? Every.Single.Appt. i finally said 'are you going to pay for it? I dont have that kind of money' and it stopped. I eventually changed dentists bc of other trust issues along w the upsell.

I left a dentist when the hard sell for Invisalign began. I was 54 years old, straight teeth (one of the lucky ones who didn't need to have braces). He said I had an overbite that needed to be addressed and braces would take care of it. No other dentist in my life brought up an overbite. Done and done.

Not that comes to mind. Already had braces, and I've never had a cavity in my 31 years. (He admitted he looked 3 times to make sure he wasn't missing anything when I had my first visit at his office. )

I’ve quit dentists before for that very reason. I really should give them that feedback but I wuss out and tell them my insurance is changing or that I’m switching jobs so they aren’t convenient to me anymore.
The old school family practices are usually more straightforward.

We left the first dental office we had in CA after a couple years, partly because of the up sell and partly because of appointment issues. Love our current dentist.

Then tell the dentist that the hygienist is not to approach your family again. That’s shady going through you husband.

I love my dentist. I have one tooth with a fracture and we’ve been watching it for about 4 years. She’s like whenever you feel the need for a crown, let me know. Now we did see a dentist about dentures for my DH who tried damn hard to get us to sign on the dotted line. We were like we don’t have that kind of cash until bonus time. They were like ok when will his bonus come, we can schedule for the day after. They called like 3 times after that asking if his bonus had come yet. I’m like are you serious right now?!? When that didn’t work they started pressing care credit.
Thankfully my friend works for an oral surgeon and he set us up with another dentist he worked with that made and fitted the dentures. None of them tried to upsell anything.

Our dentist retired a couple of years ago. We have not had this experience of upselling. The dentist who bought out the practice did raise rates 30% day 1 which seemed like a lot particularly with the amount of competition in our town now. What I have noticed is that when DH needed additional dental work, the new dentist seemed really intent on his recommendations of who to see for other services and the new dentist is new to this area. I wonder if they are all owned by the same group since apparently the new guy doesn't actually own the practice.

Although I've been going to my dentist for.ever. he is getting older, still works but probably near retiring, and I can already feel the baton being passed on within the office and starting to feel different and more profit based if that makes sense. I'll continue to go until it's too much and/or all my long time dentist(s) and hygienists are gone. Then we'll see.

This has never happened to me. But my dentist knows I don't have dental insurance and can't afford anything but the basics. He also knows I hate going to the dentist and don't want to do anything optional to prolong my visit.

I switched dentists after they kept trying to upsell stuff. New dentist also charges less for the same things with the same insurance. I would check to see if there is another dentist that is covered by your insurance. I didn’t like our old dentist and really like our new one. I really wouldn’t like the let’s see what else we can bill your insurance for kind of thing.

Not mine. We've been going there for almost 30 years and we really like him. But I know he's ready to retire soon.
But OTOH, he could not "handle" our kids lol when they were young so he said they needed a pediatric dentist.
So this pediatric place was really fancy, had a giant saltwater fish tank, all sorts of things to keep the kids entertained while waiting. Gave them laughing gas or something similar so they didn't know what was going on. And every.single.time. they had MULTIPLE cavities. Hmmm
Once they were civilized enough to go back to our regular dentist--no cavities. Maybe the pediatric dentist "fixed them all?"--I don't think so.
Another situation--a 30-ish relative who is crazy anal about her teeth and had prior fillings had moved and needed a new dentist. This new guy said all of her fillings needed to be replaced. She consulted with a dentist friend who said everything is fine and her fillings did not need to be replaced.
There's something called aggressive dentistry. Some people say it's preventive things so it's better in the long run; others say it's to pay off their student loans.

Oh wow I would not like that at all!
My dentist sold his practice and I really don't love the new guy either. He is a very skilled dentist but he's very gruff and sort of an ass. I was having a filling done and when he started drilling it became apparent VERY quickly that they didn't numb me correctly. I jumped, raised my hand and a tear just trickled down my cheek. He laughed at me. The only reason I am still going there is because I love my hygienist but she is down to working only 2 days a month. Once she is gone for good I'll be dentist shopping.

Yes! I have noticed the same with my dentist in the last few years. I have been a patient for 16 years. During my pregnancies, they convinced me to move from every 6 months to every 4 months. About 18 months ago, he told me about Invisalign and to help breathing and sleep. I don’t have trust because why did these things just start to cause issues?? I want less appointments in my life, so I said no.
When I went last summer, the hygentist didn’t have her nose under the mask. So I waited to I got my vaccine to make an appointment.

Never. And I'm pretty sure trying to save me money would be a priority as well, and the care there is excellent. I also think fluoride treatments don't fit into this category, unless they are being recommended to everyone and not on a case by case basis (it is case by case at my office, and I don't think super common). I guess I was blissfully unaware that this is happening at plenty of offices. I do absolutely love my office, for many reasons, and will appreciate them a little more now.

I switched dentists years ago because every time I walked out of there I had a new mouth guard or special toothpaste. I had trouble saying no back then, so I was part of the problem.

I have never had one that did that but my previous dentist would fill every little spot on my teeth. So now I have a mouth full of veneers and crowns. I still hate the guy for that. My current dentist takes a really cautious, wait and see approach to things he sees. Most of the spots he has seen over the years go away and they always compliment me on how little tartar I have on my teeth when I go for a cleaning. My first dentist took advantage of my parents because they paid for everything out of pocket. They didn't see that he was gouging them.
If a dentist did that to me, I would immediately stand up, say no thank you and I will not be coming back.

I beginning to understand why dental insurance policies seem to cover very little, and even braces have a hard Max. And especially why they don’t really cover cosmetic dentistry. Wow.

My previous dentist did, note previous. While it was annoying I would just sat no and let it go. I finally lost it the day I had my last cleaning there. I was being bothered by a partially erupted wisdom tooth. I ask the hygienist if the dentist would check it and give an opinion on seeing an oral surgeon. She said no because my insurance wasn’t paying for me to see the dentist, only the hygienist. So when the dentist stopped in I asked her. She spent longer explaining why she wouldn’t look without being paid that it would have taken to simply look and give me an opinion. I never said a word more to any of them. I’d been a patient there for almost 15 years. When I left the receptionist asked me if I’d like to schedule my next appointment. I told her no. She was surprised but replied she’d call in a couple of months to schedule. I told her not to bother I wouldn’t be back.
I then called my periodontist to ask what he thought. He told me to come in the next day and he’d take a look. I did. He said it needed to be removed. His wife and he are in practice together. She is the surgeon. He asked if he could remove it for me. I let him. Afterward he told the dental assistant to tell the front desk not to charge me a copay because I swore to secrecy that I wouldn’t tell his wife. 😂 He’s been my periodontist for over 20 years now. I love him and his wife so much. They are very good people. Not just because of that incident but if someone is in pain, they will work them in. They also do free periodontal work for reduced or no pay for lower income people. About 10 years ago when their youngest (of 3) left for college they decided they should adopt a child because they had so much and were so blessed in life. They adopted a set of sisters from overseas. They are just so happy they decided to do it. According to him, the girls have kept them young. Amazing.

I eventually changed dentists bc of other trust issues along w the upsell. Mine was like that, you should let us bleach your teeth, you should buy this toothbrush for four times the cost anywhere else. Every single year I went through my entire years worth of dental insurance. They would tell me there were small cracks in tiny fillings that I should get replaced since I had money left one year. I even mentioned it to my new dentist. He told me if I had cracks he had no idea which fillings it was because he couldn’t find them.
