I wouldn't look at gum grafts as an upsell... that sounds like something that needs to be done. The others sound like reasonable recommendations but if you've declined them once, they probably don't need to offer them to you again. I wouldn't love the process you're describing either, but I don't leave a medical provider I like over their office staff/business practices without providing feedback first. If you don't like the dentist, move on. If you do, then give the dentist specific feedback about what you don't like, why, and what would be better. Sometimes medical providers implement things and don't fully realize the impact on their patients. Most doctors, dentists, etc. aren't natural business people and don't always make the best choices in those areas. Input can help them. I normally wouldn't have noticed the gum grafts as an upsell before - I've had a couple of rounds of gum surgery and there is definitely recession. I noticed because one appointment, they recommended the gum grafts, and in the very next appointment, they said I needed a crown, as I had a cavity that ran along the gumline - in the same space as the graft. That's when I started really noticing the upsell. And my son's next appointment after that (he's 17), he all of a sudden was recommended a graft. They had previously never mentioned this about him. I have mentioned my dislike of the upsell (to the finance gal, my hygienist, and the office admin - but not the actual dentist, i think because I just don't care for him), but they said they'll keep doing it, as they have an obligation to tell me what I need. So yep, I'm going to leave. Pandemic made it hard, as there was a huge chunk of time where offices were closed entirely. I also got a recommendation from a trusted person for a new dentist, and that new dentist wasn't taking new people for a while. Angela, you are in the OC, yes? My son and DIL live in Lake Forest/Trabuco Canyon. I think they like their dentist. I can ask for the name if you are interested.

I've been really happy with our new dentist and the practice, they don't try and do any upselling. Added bonus is that she/them can actually see what they're doing. My previous dentist retired at a ripe old age & his vision was going. I should've moved on ages before but loved him and didn't want to leave.

I just confirmed that my potential new dentist will start taking new patients in the summer. Thank you though. (I used to work in El Toro - and the commute just killed me - I try to find services locally, as much as possible.)

My childhood dentist, with his lovely small nimble hands, retired about 6 years ago. A group practice bought it and installed the cockiest jerk, who in addition to trying to get me to correct a slight overbite and center gap, made jokes when he sliced a flap of my tongue off (took 6 weeks to heal)., and glued a loose crown on wrong and had to grind it down for ages. My hygienist was my neighbor and told me most original staff all left in the first year under new ownership. She retired early.
I nearly left, but I love my current hygienist, and they had also brought in a brand new dentist so I told Dr Jerk that I wouldn't see him anymore. Dr Jerk is at another site now - I've seen the new guy for the last 2 years. Today, he lightly tried to upsell me by asking me if I had any issues I'd like to correct with smile. I said no, and he moved on.
They used to lightly suggest a specific brand of electric tootbrush, but when COVID hit they took all the display models out of the hygienist rooms and I haven't hear a peep since.

My current dentist is right next door to my periodontist. They share the building. If I call either one in pain I’m in that day. I was so pissed that my previous dentist told me she wouldn’t look because my insurance wouldn’t pay her but I could schedule another appointment specifically for that and she would give me her opinion. Ridiculous.

Glad you found a new dentist

My long time dentist had to sell his practice (nasty divorce). I absolutely loved that dentist and I'm not loving the new guy. With the previous guy, 95% of the time, when I left the office, all I had to do was make my next appointment. Now, I feel like they are constantly trying to 'upsell' me. I can't just make my next appointment, I have to sit with the finance gal, see what coverage I have, and let's go through the list of recommended services (gum grafts, invisalign, new mouth guard), and then we can make the appointment. It gives me the same feeling as taking my car to get an oil change - where they are constantly trying to sell, and it's a yucky feeling when it involves a body part. I know I probably just need to find a new dentist, because honestly, the trust is gone. But I was wondering if this is a new thing - maybe a lot of dentists do this? I’ve been with my dentist for over 20 yrs and have referred lots of folks to him because he has never tried to sell me shit I don’t need. I completely trust him. Sorry you lost your trusted dentist. That sucks.

Have them mark your chart not to market anything to you. About five years ago, my dentist had a hygienist persuade him to carry a line of products and she tried to market them to me. I said no and to make the chart with that and I said if they tried again I would go to another dentist.

We saw a dentist ONCE who did. As he worked on us, he talked a lot about his stuff. New Tesla, boat, vacation to Europe...
Prior to this guy, my husband's family had been with the same dental practice for decades. The drive was so bad, though (2 hours in SoCal traffic each way), my MIL decided to try this new dentist.
She and my GIL both shelled put thousands of dollars for dental care. Crowns that supposedly needed to be replaced. Deep cleanings. Gum scaling. My FIL had to have his new crowns replaced at least twice.
When he saw me, I was told I had 7 cavities (I'd had zero about 14 months prior) and that all my crowns and fillings needed replacing. I also needed deep cleaning and gum scaling and a mouth guard and 3d imaging and....
We went back to the old office and lo and behold: no change from two years before.
Anerican dentistry is a scam for the most part. More focused on money than actually helping people. Doctors are required to treat patients in emergency rooms. Dentists hold no such obligation and will deny critical care to poor people.

Bragging about luxury items to a patient is not only socially inappropriate (nobody likes that guy anywhere, & it can make less wealthy people resentful or feel diminished), but it makes one question his motives & sincerity. That's just foolish.

Some 20 yrs ago a dentist told me I needed a graft because I was in danger of losing a tooth, I needed 2 root canals where my one yr old crowns were and I forgot what else. All this when I had gone in for my regular check up/cleaning, no issues whatsoever. I was a teacher and I asked him if this could wait until the summer. He just said it was better to take care of it right away. .He was a new dentist I was trying due to having moved. Needless to say I never when back. And my endangered tooth doesn’t even have the slightest wiggle.
