DS has Autism and takes meds that require a psychiatrist. We moved to Texas in July. We had 15 years of medical history at Vanderbilt U (neurology and psychiatry).
We got a referral to a psychiatrist here. Made an appointment 62 days ago.
The appointment was today.
DH flew home from working out of state a day early to attend.
Did extensive paperwork. Attached all the necessary files, including conservator docs. Paid the $250 initial fee by check. Waited 40 minutes. At which point the office lady comes out and says the doctor has looked over our info and has decided to get out of treating Autistic patients and is not going to take us on as patients.
We can stop by next Tuesday to pick up a referral and a refund of our fee.
Really? Dh insisted that we would not be leaving without the check or a refund...the office person tried to insist that a refund was not possible today...yeah right. She eventually found a way to back the whole thing out of her system and issue a refund.
I can accept that you might want to take your practice in a different direction...but if you had listened to me on the day we spoke on the phone 62 days ago...you could've saved us all a lot of time and trouble and Dh could have not missed a day and a half of work for nothing.
I seriously think we are going to keep our Nashville psych for a while and just go back for visits. Anything is better than this stupidness.

That is so unprofessional. I'm pissed off for you! Any way you could hold them responsible for the flight expenses you incurred as well?

I don't know where you are, but if you are in the Houston area, you might check into Debra Stokan at LifeTrek in Stafford (right outside of Beltway 8 near Hwy 59). We only saw her once, but she immediately had a great idea and was able to do more in that 45 minute appointment than multiple pediatric neurologists did in months! lifetreksolutions.com/ is the website and she shows on Google, but not on their list....wonder if she left? If so, I still recommend her specifically!

Unbelievable - that she waited until you were in her office to deliver this decision warrants a complaint to the local medical board IMO.
I'd also copy Vanderbilt or whoever gave you the referral to use this psych on any complaint.

That's awful. He/she didn't know that within the last 62 days?

He would have flown home Saturday anyway...but because we had this appointment today, he took off yesterday afternoon and flew in last night. Totally missed today at work. For nothing. It's our choice to have him attend...I know. Just ugh.

Oh my. I feel so bad for you. My husband is under the care of a psychiatrist. We just switched about 1-1/2 yr. ago to his new one. He had been with the old one for 15 yr. It is very scary switching psychiatrists. I think you are smart to stay with who you have for right now. Take your time. Get in touch with a large university hospital and go from there to find a new one. Or ask your new pediatrician for names. It is hard to find a good one. And then it takes forever for an appt. You may want to start asking everyone you know. If a couple people start saying the same doctors name, you'll know that might be a good one. Good luck to you.

Wow. That is unbelievably unprofessional. I would definitely be making a complaint to someone. State licensing board? Is the office in your insurance network?

If you are in the Dallas area, we LOVE our psychiatrist! We even drive in from Fort Worth to see him.

Really? Um really? Not going to see autistic children? I can see a cardiologist not want to see cancer patients. But a child psych not wanting to see autistic psychiatric patients?
Ok this is just making me angrier by the minute.
I am sorry, Sarah. I don't get it.
