I recently purchased my first manual die cut machine. It comes with a set of nested tags but I don’t have any other metal does.
What are your most used or must have metal dies?

Think about what you would use most often. Do you make cards? Then buy some happy birthday dies.
I get the most use from my alpha dies.

Not much of a card maker. Mostly scrapbooking and mixed media.

I just got an email from SB.com about pocket page dies - sounds useful for PL with a 3x4 and 4x6 die included for $9.99 during sale. A nesting set of stars, squares, or hearts would be great for journaling spots.

I use my alpha/number sets and basic shapes the most. Stars, squares, rectangles, hearts. The nested ones are a good buy, as they come in graduated sizes.

I have several from Gina Marie designs because they are well priced. I have had no problems with them.
I did a few months with coco Reno but they didn’t have a skip option so I stopped & just buy what I want.
I most use my tags, tabs, flags & arrows.

I used my nested circles all the time for matted journaling in my scrapbooks, as well as the spellbinders 6 leaf set.

A nesting set of stars, squares, or hearts would be great for journaling spots. I was just heading here to let you know about that sale. There are a couple of bundles of simple shapes nesting dies which you will find hugely useful for cards. Think banners, stars, circles, squares, triangles any shape you like, or stacked on top of each other, or cut into frames!
ETA Citygirl, The big set is sold out, but this basic bundle is half price, and included a 2x2" square (measurements are at the bottom of the listing), and there is a complimentary set with the banners and flags.

Circles are my most used. I can cut straight lines - so rectangles/squares/triangles - with my trimmer or by hand, but a good circle is hard! STITCHED shapes are my go-to because I love the extra detail. ALPHABETS - I use them so much. I cut them out and glue 3 layers together to get a dimensional letter, and I do this on both cards and layouts. I'm using far fewer letter stickers/thickers, but not buying less of them Do you have a shape/icon you wish you had more of when you use up a page of stickers? I like hearts, so I bought a die that cuts out about 10 small hearts in various sizes that I can add to projects. I just bought a stitched sunshine die, because I will happily put a sun on each and every summer layout I make

Like others have said, the basic shapes are really nice to have! Tags, banners, circles, ovals, rectangles! I really like having some leaves, greenery, and flower dies. Mostly for cards, but those would be fun for your mixed media too! And for cards, I like having dies of the basic sentiments. Happy Birthday, Congrats, etc. Makes a card quick and easy.

Not much of a card maker. Mostly scrapbooking and mixed media. This is me. I scrap with a LOT of florals, so I bought the Mini Evolution and bought several leaf dies that I will use a million times, along with a set of stars to use to scrap my nephew, a small letter alphabet and cheap set of snowflakes. I will continue to add different leaf sets. Not sure what else I’m looking for, but it has to be something I will use multiple times. It came with circles, which is nice. I have no need for rectangles, squares, tags...these things I can easily cut with my paper trimmer, or banners that I can just cut with my scissors.

Circles, for sure. The next best thing is a set of nested shapes that you can use for sentiments or focal points on your cards - like these fancy ones or these plainer ones. I also LOVE sentiment dies! Tim Holtz has a good "starter" set ( these), but I've gotten some good store-brand sets at big box stores, so you might want to look around. Have fun!!!

I use my alpha dies more than anything, and also like the square and rectangle nested. My good trimmer broke a few years ago, and it seems like newer trimmers are not as good or maybe it's just me, but I have a much easier time with square and rectangle nested dies than with a trimmer to get a perfect square & rectangle. Plus if they're nested you can get the perfect mat size too

Exclusively a scrapbooker, not a cardmaker, mixed media artist, etc., my most used dies are alphanumeric sets in various fonts & sizes, nesting circles/hearts/stars/tags/labels, & border dies. HTH.

Alphas Polaroids Notebook 3x4 Pierced nested squares Banners Nested circles Puffy nested stars

Flourishes can be used for both cards and layouts. I have a few from Spellbinders that I really like.
I have an electronic cutter, so I am more likely to buy stitched dies. The electronic cutter doesn’t give as nice a stitched line. I recommend getting Queen & Co. Foundation dies that have hearts, stars, floral/greens, banners, etc. I have a ton of dies that I have bought over the years. My Foundation dies get used the most by far.

I like tall, skinny alphas - I miss you, colored Fitzgerald Thickers!. The dies I have are similar to these. (aff. link) I bought adhesive backed glitter foam sheets and cut my letters from that. Instant Fitzgerald look alike (mostly lol), and I’ll never run out of e’s!

I am a cardmaker and I still reach for my basic nested shapes the most: circle, rectangle, square & the matching scalloped nested shapes. I don't use the oval nested shapes nearly as much. They never go out of style IMHO. Stitched basic dies add an element of interest if you are wanting something a little different to the basic shapes. I also loving the smaller sentiment dies with their shadows. Paper Rose has some gorgeous ones. I have attached a one to this post. I have no connection to the company. Heart and star dies are also very useful. I use my Poinsettia and Snowflake dies alot at Christmas-time. Attachments:

Did not read all replies this morning, so someone may have mentioned already. For storage: Magnetic vent covers from a home supply store like Lowes. They are inexpensive, so much cheaper than magnet sheets from a craft store.
I cut them to either fit the envelope or sleeves the dies came in, or empty DVD cases if there are matching stamps.
