I was doing a crossword puzzle, and the clue was "Skin (a potato)". I put in "peel". Well, the answer was "pare". I have never said or heard anyone say "pare a potato". I've heard/used "pare" with other fruits, but never with a potato. Which word do you commonly use when referring to a potato? Maybe it is regional?

My Dad was in the army and had to do a rotation in the kitchen and they pared potatoes. I never saw my Mom use a vegetable peeler on a potato my entire life. It wasn’t until I was married did I realize the peeler could be used for that. So much less waste. But even growing up, we said “peel” even though technically we “pared”.

I would say "peel" but grew up with British parents who said "pare".

I used to “peel” a potato with a “paring” knife. This how I was taught.
Now I peel a potato with a peeler. Interestingly enough, I can peel it faster with the paring knife, but there is less waste with the peeler.

We say peel but generally use a paring knife.

Definitely peel. The only time I've pared potatoes is when I accidentally threw my potato peeler out with the rubbish, and had to pare them with a paring knife.
I wouldn't use the word "peel" when I pared, or "pare" when I peeled.

Grew up using a paring knife to peel the potatoes. Now I use a peeler but have paring knives for other small cutting chores in kitchen.

From the dictionary site:

I have peeled thousands of pounds of potatoes - perhaps only slightly exaggerated. My father didn't recognize it as dinner if there weren't potatoes and my mother HATED peeling potatoes. So at an extremely young age - I was handed a knife. I disagree vehemently that using a knife involves more waste - if you do it enough, you can be an expert and will peel faster and more efficient and with little waste with a knife. But it was never paring.
Now when I have potatoes I almost always use red skin or other thin skinned varietals than don't need peeling. But once in a while I'll bust out my peeling expertise to my kids' shock and awe.

I always thought that to pare meant to make smaller, and to peel was to take the skin off. Of course taking the skin off makes it smaller, but using my definition, you can pare a potato without taking the skin off.

After the potatoes are scrubbed, I use them, peel and all. I used to peel potatoes with a paring knife. I have a stubby one. I have occasionally used a vegetable peeler.
