In my new house there is an extra walk-in closet that I am taking over as my studio space. It is certainly big enough to store a good sized collection of supplies, but the closet also isn't *that* generous on square footage. So, in addition to pairing down my supplies a bit I need to invest in storage pieces that are a more efficient use of space. I'm thinking of getting a mix of these ALEX drawers. Do any of you use these for crafty or scrapbooking storage? How do you like the unit? If you have any of these would you mind posting the interior dimensions of the drawers?

I have the second 2 pieces you posted. I love them! They hold a ton and are surprisingly sturdy. I can post the interior dimensions this evening if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

Alex drawers are a favorite in scrap rooms. Lots of examples on pinterest. My one pet peeve is that the drawers don't come all the way out. They aren't the strongest piece of ikea furniture but I really love my wide set on wheels. I personally find wide drawers way more functional than narrow ones.

I have top one for crafty supplies and the 2nd one for my work at home desk, but they are both basically the same. I love both of them. I agree, they are quite sturdy. If I had more room, I would probably get the low wide drawer one, but I don't.

I bought a set for makeup and I cannot say enough about the quality. When we moved, I watched it LITERALLY fall out the back of the moving truck and BOUNCE down our very steep driveway. Only a small dent in the back. One drawer was sticky for a couple days but now you'd never know it happened. Ig I had the room I'd buy a dozen for my craft supplies.

I have several of the middle ones. One is the base on one side of an Ikea table/desktop and several more are bases that make a perpendicular counter to the desk with a piece of acrylic spanning them instead of a table top. (A corner table from Ikea fills in the space where they meet though it’s not required to work well.) The bottom one in your picture is on casters in a shallow closet. BTW, Organize More makes drawer inserts. I have a couple but mostly use a variety of boxes/bins or nothing. The height of even the shallow drawers still surprises me that taller things can be put in than I assume will fit. www.organizemore.com/collections/storage-for-ikeaIf you want to tart them up: www.mywonderfulwalls.com/collections/drawer-decals-for-ikea-alex-unitsthe owner is a sweetheart. I have one for the closet unit. It’s the only gray Alex and I recently took off the closet doors. Wanting shallow shelves instead of drawers, one of the smaller Alexes was put together without the drawers. The metal drawer runners come already installed and make a lip that acrylic or wood shelves can rest on top. Laminated closet shelves from Home Depot were cut for shelves, though they don’t go all the way back. Two could be used butted against each other though I didn’t need that much length. Unexpected bonus - a full sized Scor-Pal fits on top of one set of runners without needing a shelf. The bottom two shelves were changed to 1/4” acrylic sold/cut by a glass shop, since our newly adopted cat would crawl onto them and out the back, pushing things off the shelves. (Many cats won’t walk on glass/acrylic since they don’t look solid.) He was shocked and annoyed for only a few hours. The only concern I’ve read that never crossed my mind, despite having Alexes for years, along with many crafters, was that like many companies’ units, drawers don’t pull out 100%. There’s a stop. A youtube video shows how to change that though It looked like a pain. I also have a short Alex unit with a hanging file drawer at the bottom, which had a solvable problem, but you didn’t post that one. Obviously I love them and have spent too much time fiddling with them. They are very sturdy and look new some after many years.

Last thing: If using glass or acrylic to cover the top of an Alex or Alexes, It can be slightly raised with wood or acrylic strips or even stacked chipboard placed perpendicularly under it at intervals. Then rulers or other flat items can be slid underneath, sticking over the edge a hair. Stops can be made with chipboard going across the units. (For sure that’s clear as mud.)

From what I’ve read, IKEA is redoing the Alex drawers. You might have trouble finding them in stock till this summer when the new style releases.

I love the Alex drawers in both sizes. I bought Dollar Tree plastic drawer trays that organize all my embossing powders, glitters, paint tubes, ink refills, stickles and stencils in the top three narrow drawers. In the bottom wider drawers, I store pots of white gesso, prima art stones, embossing enamels, modeling pastes, distress stains, paints and sprays. Both Alex drawers fit A LOT. Right now I have 2 wide ones (one on top of the other) and 2 small ones holding up 2 tables in my craft room.
I like searching buy & sell sites, like Kijiji/Craigslist, for used ones cause they are already built. If they are in excellent/good shape I will pay top dollar.

So do you all prefer the drawers over open shelving? I find if I put things in drawers I forget about them. If they are on shelves, I remember.

Looks like a color change and in the reddit it says this: See the above Imgur post for the new colours and exact articles coming to Canada, USA, and UK. The image from the Sales Start Package likely shows a preliminary version. The "Dark Brown" pictured there has actually materialised as a replacement for the existing black-brown, which can be seen in the new photos, and the list of articles from PIA Facts. The new versions of the popular drawer unit are the same dimensions, but have some minor hardware updates, including provision to screw the ALEX unit into certain new tabletops

The wide, shallow closet without doors is mostly open shelving but the wide Alex unit is on one side. Below desk height I prefer drawers, with the one exception of the Alex unit that I turned into open shelving for stamp positioners, score boards, cutting and clip boards and punch boards. My most used items in drawers close to me are constantly grabbed so not forgotten - like embossing powders. I just swivel right. Oxides and other full sized ink pads are on the wall (Organize More units), but cubes are in a top Alex drawer to my left. Goal: advanced laziness.

I have the 3rd piece. Interior measurements are 23 1/2”by 16 3/4”. The shallow drawers give you about 2 1/4” of depth and the larger ones are about 3”.

I much prefer drawers but wide drawers. That way I can see a lot at one time and leave them open while I'm working to simply grab things as I need them. Then they get shut all all the stuff is hidden. I use 2 drawers as color drawers to store stickers, embellishments, twine, dots, brads, buttons, ribbon etc by color. The other ones are for punches, tags, ink (I don't have a lot), small tools, etc. On the top I keep my manual die cutter and it all sits to the right of me to make an L shaped work area.

Unfortunately, the measurements people offer from existing units they own may not work for you. They're revamping this line and even though the exterior looks the same, supposedly the drawer dimensions on the interior aren't the same in the new ones compared to the old ones across the board.

I use bins & trays to store smaller sticker sheets, veneers, and smaller embellishments. They are at my fingertips and I can rifle through them without getting up. Plus it's less to clean.

I’ve been watching the Clutterbug YT channel and she describes 4 different organizing styles that help explain why some people have every drawer micro-organized and other people need a big basket on a shelf to dig through. You sound like a visual organizer (I forget the details of the 4 types but some people need closed doors and some people just can not). This video might help

I have been following Victoria Calvin’s craft room revamp and she’s had to change her plans because (presumably) her wall of drawers was going to be IKEA Alex and they’re out of stock everywhere and she can’t wait any longer.

I have the first 2 - 1 tall & 2 of the shorter ones that are eventually going to be a long Linnmon desk once the top & leg are back in stock. I like them all-they’re sturdy and hold a lot which helps keep the chaos level down. My pet peeve is the drawers can stick a little when you close them. I’ve marked all the fronts with notes of what’s inside and each one has similar items-inks & stamping stuff, pens/calligraphy/mark making, stuff I use all the time & watercolors. All the rest of my supplies are on open bakers shelving from a big box home improvement place-they were meant to be temporary but turns out I love them. Use translucent bins with a labels & they hold a lot!

I have two if the big ones and have them stacked. Best storage ever. However, unless you reinforce the drawer bottoms, they will warp if you store heavy items. I had all my punches in a drawer and DH had to fix it for me after it warped so bad I couldn’t get the drawer to open and close.
