I heard from a couple of friends that roombas were great. And since I’m lazy and hate vacuuming, I finally bought one from Costco.
We gave 2 dogs and a cat, so I typically use it everyday downstairs where we have hardwood floors and rugs.
The battery power is terrible. It can’t even do the whole floor without needing to be recharged. It doesn’t pick up all the fluff on the floor and on the upstairs carpet it leaves balls of carpet fibres all over the place. This morning after it cleaned the kitchen and dining area, I had to brush and mop to clean up properly. I feel like I’m constantly walking around picking up bits it leaves behind.
So, are you happy with yours? Am I expecting too much from mine?

Mine isn't a high-power sucker if that is what you are looking for, but it does the job. I do real vacuum the carpets every week or three to get what Roomba leaves behind.
I have one short-haired dog that sheds A LOT and a cat that also sheds plus I live near a field with crops or cows depending on the time of year which means dust is a factor.
Every once in a while Roomba will leave something behind, but not usually.
Run time for my Roomba is about 1.5 hours before it heads back to base to charge
ETA: Roomba runs on my hardwood and a 8x10 rug I don't think it works well on thick carpet

I didn't like mine several years ago and never bought another. It was constantly getting stuck in places around the house, took forever to work, and didn't have a very large compartment for what it had picked up. It seemed much easier to just get out my Dyson stick vacuum and do it myself.
I do know people who like theirs, though. It might depend on how much it needs to pick up and the configuration of your furniture.

Worst money we ever spent. And my husband wanted to return it, but I wouldn’t let him, so I have to pretend it wasn’t the worst money we ever spent.
But it definitely was.

I’m picking up everything that could impede the cleaning and removing the dining chairs so it can get under the table easily. It was a toss up between a Dyson stick and a roomba, and I went with the roomba because it was cheaper. I have a 1 year old shark vacuum which I hate and it’s stopped working very well despite regular cleaning. I may have to invest in the Dyson stick after all.

We bought ours in the US, right before we moved to Tokyo. We didn’t open it until we got here, so we can’t return it:( Definitely a waste of money though. Glad I didn’t buy the top of the range model though.

Hated ours. It required too much babysitting. It’s easier just to do it myself.

I love my Dyson stick. One of my best money spends. I'm just the opposite. I got one for Christmas and don't feel that it's nearly as good as the Dyson ball. I find having to support the base a bit tiring, the smaller head requires more passes, and the suction isn't as good as the ball. Great for stairs, quick pick ups and love the small footprint, but I still need my plug in.

I love my Roomba - in fact I have 3 robot vacuums.
That said - they are not regular vacuums and really can’t compare to or replace a regular vacuum.
Mine are used to keep the dog fur under control and to keep the general dirt/dust off the floor. I still vacuum with my dyson stick quite often.

I'm picturing you talking to roomba and saying "I'm not mad you missed the fluff, I'm just disappointed."

After singing its praises for months, it's kind of pissed me off lately. It keeps dying and forgetting to go dock and recharge or saying it's full when it's not and requires a special wipedown.
It's still great for between vacuums, with 3 cats and a dog, but it hasn't lasted nearly as long as it should have and I think they're too finicky. I do love seeing those fresh vacuum lines in the carpet in the morning.

It is absolutely not for full cleaning jobs, I should’ve added that, I have a Dyson animal canister vac for that. But for daily, quick “keep ahead of the fur” jobs, I love mine.

Not sure if it counts but we have a Shark IQ which is a roomba knockoff. It has a canister so when it’s full it can dock, unload and keep going. It can also ‘memorize’ the room layout so it makes sure to get everything. With 2 cats it saved us when the pandemic started. That said, we have since got a Dyson v11 and it is amazing.

I don't love mine either. I have a yellow lab, so lots of fur. I use the roomba only downstairs on the hardwoords, and it is clearly picking some stuff up since I have to empty it after each run (or during - the canister or whatever that is called is very small) but it seems like it blows stuff around, and I end up either swiffering or pulling out my hand held vacuum to run behind it.

I had one and the brush roller stopped working. Shark really pissed me off when I tried to get it fixed - they told me I needed a part that wasn't under warranty so I purchased that and it didn't work; then they charged me shipping to return it and finally sent the part that was under warranty. So if it is your brush roller than has stopped, let me know and I'll go pull the emails I have and let you know what you need to do/say to get that fixed.

I don’t have one. I never thought they would do a thorough job. I can look at my main living area and picture all of the places it would miss. Dog hair collects in corners and under chairs and tables that are not accessible for the Roomba.
Easier to do it myself, the right way the first time.

I received one as a birthday gift. I had never hinted at wanting one, so I have no idea why he bought it. I have a really good vacuum and I actually like vacuuming.
The thing was always getting stuck somewhere under couches or chair legs and I had to keep rescuing it. If I had been out of a room for too long, I had to hunt for the darned thing because it was no longer making a noise. It did pick up from the areas that it travelled in, but it was too frustrating to run because you had to sit and babysit it.
This version was years ago, so maybe they have improved them since I had mine. It ended up not working after a couple of months. They sent me a firmware update that I had to install and return to them. It didn't fix it. I tried a couple of times to get it fixed and the support wasn't very helpful. I ended up just tossing it. I probably should have persevered, but I was annoyed that it was taking so much more effort than whipping out my vacuum did.

Then it started dying without docking, getting stuck, etc.

The clock could not keep itself straight, it was loud, and it would get stuck somewhere every single time. Not worth the hassle.

This is making me laugh. We literally just opened our replacement Roomba, for one originally purchased from Costco. My DH spent more than an hour on the phone with customer service about the original one - trying to remote command from the Philippines. It wouldn't dock, but it would get lost, go in circles or repeatedly clean the same area. After that call, three weeks later we get the replacement today - Roomba in a Box. It reminded me of SNL Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg "D*ck in a Box". That's it. Nothing else inside, no packing materials, no return information. And it won't turn on.
When it worked, it worked really well. But we kinda need it to work all the time.

I like ours, but our dog does not and I don't use it as often as I had planned because of that. I have to pick up/sweep all the small pieces she creates with her bones or paper before I can run it. I do like it instead of the vacuum. Ours is in a location that gets bumped and I don't keep up with checking the charge.

I don't love mine either. I still run my dyson stick nearly daily at times. However, I still run the robot vacuum every day too because when I empty the dust cup, I am still seeing a fair amount of dust come up (I have two boys and a dog who are in and out all day) so I just have to tell myself that that's that much less dirt that's not still in my carpet.

I'm picturing you talking to roomba and saying "I'm not mad you missed the fluff, I'm just disappointed." Lol - I’m totally mad that I have to keep picking up balls of fluff when it’s done. I’m also mad that I didn’t ask the peas first rather than my real life friends!!

We got one years ago when they were a big deal. What a pain. My husband loves gadgets and the Roomba was one of his purchases. Waste of time and money. We gladly parted with it at a garage sale.

DH was the one who just had to have one, which I never understood since I doubt the man has run a vacuum on anything other that his truck interior in over 25 years. I think if you have multiple pets that shed it’s not going to do much for you. We got ours when we had three shedding dogs and it was a joke. It doesn’t get into corners, it fills up really fast, it gets stuck under the same couch every single time so we had to block off whole sections of the room to keep that from happening. Plus it’s noisy as hell constantly thunking around into walls and doors and chair legs so I never liked running it when I was home, but if I would run it when I was gone it would always get lost and I’d have to go on a search and rescue to find it.
