I have been thinking my dh really needs to get like a decent suit. The pants, and jacket. He only has a tweed suit coat right now, and while in a pinch he's worn it during the summer, it just didn't look/seem right. He's going to need a nice suit I think for upcoming events/weddings/funerals
What color should we look at? and what store? I was thinking a dark navy? or is grey more common?

Navy is nice but just like the ‘little black dress’ I think black would be a better choice. It’s covers a multitude of occasions.

I would do a navy suit. Funerals in MN aren’t so formal that he would need to wear black and a blue suit can be worn to weddings. At least that’s what the guy told DS when he got his interview suit 2 years ago. Unfortunately, he bought it in Virginia, so I can’t help you with where to buy it. But I can tell you where DH got his suit made 2 years ago in DC and it fits like a dream!

My husband recently bought a suit for my daughter's upcoming wedding. I think it's navy blue, but it could be black. He got it at the end of last summer so I don't really remember. He got it at Men's Warehouse. They tailored it to fit him and it looks really nice. He was kind of dreading going in to get one, but he felt good about it when we left.

I personally like a super dark navy and men’s warehouse or Jos A Banks.

Ellen, how much did a suit like that cost? We don't live anywhere near a men's warehouse, but could go to one when we are in the cities at our dd's.

I like a navy suit, too. My husband would say to get it at Macy's (that's where he works!)

Halberstats in the mall is good. I just got my oldest a suit there, they made it so easy.

I'd say navy or dark grey. My husband got nearly all of his suits from Dillard's. He would wait for sales but, still you are looking at several hundred dollars for a nice suit. Fabric matters a lot. The thing that was great about Dillard's is that they included hemming for free and would make other alternations for a reasonable price if needed.

I would go dark grey or navy (with navy being my preference).

It really wasn't all that much, but he had to get everything - shirt, shoes, belt, and tie. Those kind of things add to the cost quite a bit. They have a website that you can check out. We're pretty rural and we just googled to see what our options were in Duluth. They had recently opened a store at the mall, so it was really easy. My husband really had no clue of what he wanted. He said he wanted a dark suit to wear to his daughter's wedding and the guy working helped him find what he needed. They took some measurements and sent him an email shortly after letting him know his suit was ready to be picked up.

DH has a very dark navy suit that he wears to formal events, as well as the office when having important meetings. He also has a dark gray suit, but wears it more to the office on regular days. If your DH is only getting one suit, I would have him go with the dark navy. I can't help with where to buy as DH has had all his suits, blazers and shirts custom made for nearly 40 years since off the rack doesn't fit him (big guy, built like a linebacker). I do recommend that if you buy off the rack that he has it fitted and altered by a tailor. It is worth that extra money because it will look (and feel so much better) on him.

My son always picks black suits and my husband gray suits. What color looks best on him?

This may sound trashy, but I always got suits from the thrift stores. (I wore men's suits as they seemed to fit me better than women's suits) My husband has a western cut suit that really looks good on him and is perfect for his personality. The jacket has a western type yoke. There are some really nice suits in the thrift stores.
I loved that I could try them on and see how they fit. I could pick up three or four for about $100 and after wearing them I did not mind if one or two ended up being tossed.

We've had good luck at Macy's. There is a wide range of prices.
I'd go with charcoal.

DH needed a sports coat recently. Men's Wearhouse had a BOGO sale but just one was like $600 and they kept trying to upsell shirts and ties and even shoes. We went to Macy's and got one in a nicer fabric for around $150.

Charcoal grey is my favorite color for men's suits. It is not as somber as black and can go with just about any color shirt or shoes.
Both DH and my Dad have charcoal suits and always look so well dressed in them. They look so good when they wear colorful shirts. Even my 93 year old Dad will wear a pretty purple or aqua shirt.
To me, navy is a tricky color because there are so many shades of blue that they can sometimes look weird.

Thanks everyone!! great ideas and things to think about! I'm leaning towards a charcoal grey, but we are definetly going to look when we get to the cities next time.

I need to buy DS a suit for his graduation and was thinking of checking out Macy’s. We did go to Men’s Wearhouse a couple of years ago because DS needed a suit for presentations at school....MW was pretty $$$ for a high school kids needs. We did end up buying a jacket from them that was on sale but I think it was still $150.
I am also considering oredering some suits from Amazon Prime Wardrobe. In case you don’t already know, if you use the Prime Wardrobe features, you can order up to (I think) 7 items and you don’t pay for anything until a week after the items arrive. If nothing fits, you just send it back within that 7 day window and pay nothing.

I like the idea of going to a place that does tailoring though. If we are going to spend money, I want it to fit him really good.

Do you have a Burlington Coat Factory near you? That has been our favorite place to find a suit for DH (who rarely wears one). For something who wears all the time, I 100% recommend going to a tailor.
DH always goes for a shade of gray from green to blue to charcoal. Go for the color that looks best on your DH.

Just remember to allow 1-2 weeks for the tailoring. Men’s warehouse will do it for you.

I may still give it a try but plan to check out Macy’s this week too. I guess if DS ended up going with something from Amazon we could take it to a local tailor, if need be.

Dh only wears a suit once a year, to his holiday party. We finally got him a decent one from Nordstrom's during a sale. They did the alterations too.
