I had one. It lasted about 18 months, didn't do a brilliant job and scared the bejasus out of Stanley, the cat.

get one! we bought an iRobot 2 weeks ago and my husband and I say its the best purchase we have ever made! seriously, I never thought I would be giddy over a vacuum lol. We have 3 dogs, hardwoods and tile and I would get pet hair tumbleweeds blowing across my living room floor. Now it is so nice to come home to a perfectly clean floor.
Ours goes room to room and also came with 2 "watchtowers"... If you set the watchtower in a doorway and turn it on the machine will not enter that room

Mine was a gift. I would never have bought it, but I love it. The only issue is my dining room furniture has low rails so I have to dust mop under some of the pieces the roomba doesn't fit under. It does a much better job than I expected, even with all the dog hair. I can see it working better with a more open floor plan than we have in our old house though.

I didn't care for mine. It got stuck under furniture a lot, and the tiny cup that holds the yuck filled up way too fast to be useful.

I've been thinking about getting one for a long time because we have 3 cats & 2 dogs and LOTS of hair. I'm always sweeping. It's good to hear your reviews and see if it's worth the $$.

We're building a new house that will have both hardwoods and tile in the downstairs. I'm definitely getting one!

On my second one. Three dogs, low shedders and it does a great job when run and emptied daily. Unfortunately the first one met with an unfortunate demise. We had a sick dog who had a poop "accident" and the Roomba ran over and through the pile of poop. It left little tire trails of poop all over until it finally got too plugged up to run.

I have one. I loved it at first. Did a great job. Got under the beds and entertainment cabinet. I didn't like to be home when it was running because I didn't like the noise it made. I came home to find a couple deep scratches in my new hardwood floor. Apparently a stick was brought into the house, mostly likely from the dog, it got stuck on Roomba and when it got the hardwood she went around and round in circle and scratched up my floor. I just about died! I did manage to cover them up with a stain pen but, since then Roomba has not been my friend and I am back to vacuuming myself.

We have one. I like it but we don't have pets. My bedroom has deep carpet which is too thick. It sometimes will get stuck. The rest of our floors are hardwood and it does a great job. My favorite thing it does is go under the couch, chairs etc--things that are too heavy to move. I checked under the couch with a swiffer the first time I used it and it was so clean!

Just don't get me started on the residual smell.

Got one of the pet hair ones from Costco about a year ago as we have two dogs that shed a lot! It works great on the wood and tile downstairs and rarely gets stuck. Ours does have a lot of bite marks on it as one of the dogs apparently thinks that there is something very sinister about the roomba. Once I left a paper bag on the next to top step upstairs and for some reason roomba became confused and hurled itself down the stairs. There were parts all over the place but I put it back together and it works fine.
I liked mine so much I bought one for my parents.

Dumb questions alert...our house is open plan but split level - what about stairs, does the Roomba know to stop at the top of a step? Also, how noisy is it? Wondering if it can be run during the night without waking everyone (there's no way our 2 dogs would "allow" the Roomba to do it's stuff during the day)

I have a lot of tile downstairs, an area rug, and carpet in my formal living room and dining room. I also have "pet hair tumbleweeds" (LOVE THAT) and vacuuming should be an everyday thing as my bully sheds horrible. Just wondering how it would work on those areas? My carpet is of average thickness.

It hovers terrifyingly for a few seconds, and then turns round and goes about its business. We found that was too noisy to use during the night, and it sets the burglar alarm off if you run it during the day when you are out. And it scares the bejasus out of the cat. Oh, and it doesn't do corners.

I can see it working better with a more open floor plan than we have in our old house though. I've wanted a Roomba but read so many mixed reviews that I couldn't quite persuade myself to part with the cash for one so had to click on to this thread! We have a Victorian house so definitely not an open floor plan, so was interested to read this comment as I hadn't thought about it from that angle! However, on Saturday I saw a Roomba type lawn mower - bigger than the Roomba of course but it was happily doing it's work on the lawn whilst the guy was cleaning his car! Two 'watchtowers' stopped it wandering off the lawn. Decided then that I want one of those!!

I have one and wouldn't buy one again. To me, cleaning it every time it runs is a pain and makes its own mess (especially when you clean the rollers). Because I have a cat, I only use it when I'm at home because Roomba will close doors and kitty has gotten trapped in a bedroom with Roomba when "supervising" it. It takes me about 30 minutes to give my house a very thorough, top-to-bottom vacuum - and I'd rather do that that fool with Roomba's shenanigans.
That said, I do still use it - run Roomba 1 - 2x a week and do a big vacuum 1x a week. But I've toyed with selling it and wouldn't replace it if died.

We have a cat, but he's not the culprit - my kids are. I have two toddlers and under my kitchen table is horrifying (even with sweeping twice a day). Will the Roomba do the trick? My husband really, really wants one, but I am a cheapskate and don't want to spend the money if it won't fix my kitchen issue. (Kitchen/living/dining are all hardwood.)
