I wanted something light and easy on the TV and I love Melissa McCarthy in everything she does. I noticed that her husband, Ben Falcone, wrote and directed the film. It is the kind of movie that would be good for little kids, I guess. It isn’t a film that would normally hold my attention, but I wanted something on in the background while I sorted a mountain of paperwork. The premise is two childhood friends who end up becoming superheroes to save the city of Chicago from super-powered Miscreants.
As I was watching the beginning of it, I thought that the actress that played Melissa’s character as a child really captured her mannerisms and comedic timing. So much so that after it was over, I was curious and googled the cast. I learned that the child is actually her daughter, Vivian Falcone. She has so much of her mother’s expressions.
This wasn’t an “Oh my gosh, you need to watch this!” type of show, but it was fun to see their daughter do so well in her parent’s movie. If you have the time to kill and little ones to watch it (there is cussing and lots of physical violence, but the violence is mostly the superhero team beating up the bad guys. I did enjoy watching Melissa, as I always do, but especially when she was flying through the air in battle.

We watched this earlier today. Everything Melissa does makes me laugh.
I didn’t know that was her daughter ! We even commented that the girl did such a great job !

We watched it the other day too. I didn't realize that was her daughter. I really like Octavia Spencer but there was something off, not sure if it was her and Melissa's chemistry or her character (felt flat, although they tried to develop the character, it didn't connect for me). I did like the actress who player her daughter and felt she had good chemistry with Melissa. It was a fun movie but I only need to see it once.

I watched this weekend too. I thought it was horrible. Yeah, as an adult, I get that. I think you need to be a Melissa fan to enjoy this. And like I said, probably best for kids and would not be a movie of choice for me under normal circumstances. It really isn’t a must see, but I enjoyed learning that the actress that I felt captured Melissa as a younger girl really was her daughter. You could probably just watch it that far to see the daughter’s scenes. Although then you would miss Melissa flying around in the air, which I did find funny. @caangle, yeah, I didn’t like them together either. They didn’t mesh that well.

Oh, I usually like Melissa. It was just all too strange.

I saw the trailer last night but couldn’t get in the mood for it. Perhaps another time? That’s cool about their daughter though!

I hoped it would be good, but I was pretty underwhelmed. The crab guy was the funniest part.

I wondered where they found a young girl who looked so much like she could be Melissa. Never even considered it could be her daughter. lol

I really like Octavia Spencer but there was something off, not sure if it was her and Melissa's chemistry or her character (felt flat, although they tried to develop the character, it didn't connect for me). They are actually really good friend IRL, and have been for like 25 years. ETA: I’m pretty sure her daughter played a young her in The Boss, too. And I’m a huge Melissa McCarthy fan (I actually watched three other movies of hers this week because I was in the mood) but this was not one of her better ones. At all.

I just didn't feel it come across the screen (and I really wanted it to). My bar is pretty low in general, but this one just didn't cut it.

I wonder if this was a situation where their actual friendship got in the way.

Dh and I were kind of "well it could be really bad" because Falcone directed it and he doesn't have a great track record but we did enjoy it. I still can't figure out what Octavia Spencer's character would actually contribute to a battle other than hiding:)

We watched it last night, too. It was stupid but it made me laugh, which is about all I ask for these days.

This was a movie I was really looking forward to but like others it just fell flat. I feel it could have been really good to. I had no idea that was her daughter. That’s kind of cool. I’m glad it wasn’t just me though.

Oh, it was bad. Just so so bad. Such a shame because Melissa McCarthy is so funny! Melissa Leo needs to stick to serious roles or she was just miscast in this role. Octavia Spencer is usually very good in anything she's in but she just didn't come through for this film. This would have been a good buddy movie but the plot was lame.

I love Octavia Spencer, but she either wasn't right for this role or she was badly directed. I am guessing the latter, as I have seen her in too many great roles to think she'd be this disconnected. The movie itself wasn't very good, but I agree that the kids actors were the best of the whole bunch.
