These tweets provide their versions of conservatives
I can’t figure out what conservatives support and have been wondering long before trump appeared on the scene.
I mean look at the first comment about the ACA. From the time it was passed the Republicans bowed to repeal it but offered no alternative.
Leasing up to the 2016 the Republican candidates only reason offered-not to vote for the Democrats was a vote for Democrats is a vote for Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco values. Raise your hand if you know what San Francisco values are.
In the lead up to the 2018 & 2020 elections the message from Republicans had switched from San Francisco values to socialism.
But in their “message” the Republicans never did offer a serious alternative to socialism. Other than taking credit for things that started during the Obama Administration.
I read a piece about how the elected Republicans in Congress are not interested in actually governing, what they want to do is pack the courts with really right wing conservative judges and let them govern. Somehow I’m pretty sure that is not what the Founding Fathers intended when they set-up the government.
Thanks to the Republicans nothing gets done in Congress unless it’s a crisis or some insufficient bill.
But the biggest mystery of all is why people keep voting for Republicans. They thumb their noses at the very people who vote for them all the time.
Right now the Republicans in Congress are coming up with ridiculous reasons not to support the infrastructure bill. Even though it’s popular with voters all up and down the political spectrum.
But the best example of Republicans thumbing their collective noses at the very voters who voted them into office are Missouri’s State Legislators. The voters passed a proposition that they wanted to expand Medicaid. I saw, at least at this point, the MO State Legislators are going to ignore the wishes of the voters and not fund the state’s part of Medicaid. Which I guess kills it.
It’s a mystery why people continue to vote for people who have no interest in governing.

I don’t know but I am positive not one conservative will bother to chime in on this thread. It is not an actual invitation to share a viewpoint. The intent is to bash. Which after that big long thread about how all the conservative peas have left and not understands why they would leave. This. This is why they have left.

I get that, but I also am so incredibly frustrated right now. As far as I can tell, the only legislation that conservatives seem to be coordinating to introduce right now is legislation that seeks to make life incredibly difficult for trans adults, trans kids, and parents of trans kids. People are going to suffer, enormously. It's so hurtful.

They’re not really conservative when it comes to *policies*, though. And haven’t been for a long time. 🤷🏼♀️ They’re the party of Trumpism - retaining power at all cost (even at the cost of democracy), marginalizing the marginalized further, owning the libs, and not much else.

And don't forget the over two hundred laws the GOP has in the works to make voting more difficult for everyone, but especially for those who traditionally vote Democrat and/or live in areas that traditionally vote Democrat.

We all know what they're supposed to stand for. The problem is that they don't stand for those things anymore - to all our detriment.
ETA: And we also all know that there are good people out there who hold conservative core beliefs. The problem is that Trumpism has taken over the GOP to the point where those voices are drowned out.

This. I haven’t waded into this thread, other than to read it, because it seems that people are equating conservative and the current GOP. The current GOP platform and politicians deserve my ire and disgust, IMO, but people who hold some true conservative values don’t. For example, I am all for balancing the budget, and starting to erase - rather than build - our national debt. That, to me, is a conservative value. The problem is that the GOP - especially while under Trump - was very happy to send the national debt skyrocketing partially by giving corporations and the wealthy tax cuts. That, to me, is NOT how conservatives act, but it is, unfortunately, the current pattern supported by the GOP.

Why is it so hard for everyone on this board to comprehend that? trump = republican party. If you support the Republican Party you support trump. If you support the Republican Party or associate yourself with the Republican Party, then you can go fuck yourself. You are evil vile scum. If you are conservative and abhor trump and what he stands for, then you better stop calling yourself a republican and immediately change you party affiliation to independent. It's pretty fucking simple.

The real question though is of those moving to independent will change their voting behavior or if they will continue to voice for Republican candidates who get increasing more conspiracy minded

The real question though is of those moving to independent will change their voting behavior or if they will continue to voice for Republican candidates who get increasing more conspiracy minded I think some will continue to vote Republican but many will sit out or vote 3rd party. I have an ex-friend who swears up and down that she’s an independent just because she’s a registered independent. That woman has not voted for anyone but the farthest right nutter every time. She’s a super religious, trump boot licker, borderline Q supporter. I was still friends with her on a peripheral level, really she was just a running buddy because we had a similar pace. But she was starting to post crazy conspiracy theories from pastors and priests on YouTube, she even said I would think she was nuts with all the things she was posting. I muted her for 30 days. But the days after the insurrection I peeked at her page and she was calling on her fellow “patriots” to leave Facebook and Twitter in mass to go to MeWe and Parlar. I’m like yep, I’m done. I was really tempted to call some people I know in the Air Force to let them know about her and her family. Her kid is AF and I know he believes all this same crap. I would not be surprised if they were in DC.

Actually what happened to the Republican Party started long before trump came on the scene. All he did was amplify it.
This country has a multitude of problems that should have been addressed decades ago. Some longer then that.
Part of the problem of addressing these problems is one of the two major political parties just checked out. The elected officials of this party decided they didn’t want to govern anymore. Or at least address the problems that are crippling the country.
Best as I can tell this “checking out” by the Republican Party started in the 1990’s after Clinton became President.
It was about this time that the Hastert Rule was born in The House. Basically it was as long as the Republicans had the majority they would just ignore the Democrats when it came to passing any legislation. And then there was the Tea Party.
Problem was, even with a majority the Republicans did nothing. Well that’s not entirely true. Their constant push for deregulating things help bring on the Great Recession.
Unlike the Democrats the Republicans have not had a real platform for years. Oh wait tax cuts and small government. And how has those things helped this country?
What the Republicans did during this time when they decided they didn’t want to govern on any substance issues, was to start stacking the deck in their favor to guarantee they could still win elections without offering much to the voters. They did this by gerrymandering and voter suppression or what I call by cheating.
And during this time conservatives voters dutifully voted for these guys. Politicians who offered nothing and who clearly didn’t want to govern. But yet these guys were always re-elected year after year.
And now this country is in real danger of crashing and burning. Because not only are Republican elected officials not interested in governing they are acting as obstructionist to stop the Democrats from trying to address the problems that are tearing this country apart.
And they do this because they know Republican voters will continue to vote for them no matter what they do or not do.
And the mystery is why do Republican voters keep voting for people who offer nothing in the way of a platform and who not only have no intention in governing but seem to have no problem in destroying the country as well?
As to expecting a response from any conservatives when I started this thread? I expected none. It was just expressing observations that have been floating around in the noggin for some time and when I saw those tweets in the OP I decided to share my observation and ask the question why.
Decent people don’t vote for the destruction of the country. Nor do they sit it out waiting to see what happens. Decent people join the other side that is trying to make things better until such time as their own political party sees the error of their ways and decides to stop cheating, start to govern and offer their voters an agenda that will make them WANT to vote for them.
At some point, I believe, Republican voters are going to have to have a “come to Jesus moment” and decide if they want to vote to stop this country from crashing and burning or continue to vote for individuals who seem hell bent on destroying it.
IMO

He might say "Fu$k Ted Cruz" in his audiobook *now* but he didn't speak up when the Republican Party was on its way tripping down that primrose path to the do-nothing, obstructionist conspiracy party while Clinton was President. His excuse was "I'm the leader of the party; I have to take them where they- the majority of them- want to go" which, IMO, is a bunch of SH!T. If he was the leader of the party, he could have STEERED the party so it wouldn't have happened. Just like good ol' Mitch makes a pronouncement now and they all go along. eta: this is my 15,000th post! I'm a "persistent pea" lol!! (I talk a lot sometimes... )

The question is why do voters continue to vote for politicians that have checked out? What do these voters stand for if they continue to vote for Republicans candidates who have made it clear that if elected they aren’t going to do much?
If one votes for a Democrat, they know what they are voting for as the Democrats have plans/ideas up the kazoo of what they want to do if elected.
Some group in Norway issued a warning that students from Norway going to school in underdeveloped countries should leave. Their example of an underdeveloped country was the United States. Underdeveloped in the areas of health care and the infrastructure.
You can’t argue with that so the question becomes what are the GOP’s plans to address these issues? They have none but yet they keep getting elected.
Why?
If voters keep voting against their own interests, like being able to keep the power on during a winter storm, what then do they stand for?
They go on about conservative values, but do conservative values include sitting in the dark freezing to death?

Still unclear. Is this thread about the GOP/Republican Party, the radical right, or classic conservative values?
Really, many people are muddling all the various segments and talking as if they are one entity. That doesn’t illuminate anything, nor further any dialogue, IMO.

The title is “what do conservatives stand for?” I’ve been posting examples of what they’re currently supporting. So I believe it’s safe to agree it’s what they stand for. Support = agreement, no?
