Dh and I both turn 50 this summer and want to take a trip to Vegas in late September to celebrate. He's been as a child as his grandparents had a vacation home nearby. I've never been. Gambling isn't my thing but I think there are a few things I'd enjoy.
We want to see a Cirque show and the Hoover Dam. Not sure what else. So far I'm wanting to stay at the Bellagio but I haven't looked too much yet.
Looking for restaurant recommendations and entertainment that isn't too wild (not into serious partying, much gambling and we don't want to ride coasters/skydive etc).

I have, it was ok but i wasn't overwhelmed impressed. I'd stay somewhere cheaper and have more money for fun stuff, or else go full luxury.

We stayed at the Bellagio in February.
We were underwhelmed. The rooms really need to be updated. Everyone in our group (4 families in 4 separate rooms) complained that their rooms were hot and the AC wasn’t modern/strong enough to handle that hotel (and that was in February!). I will say that the bathrooms were nice.
While the lobby is beautiful and the location is great, the state of the rooms didn’t justify the cost of staying there as compared to other hotels nearby.
I will say that we had a beautiful view - our room faced the Eiffel Tower and hot air balloon and overlooked the fountains out front, so we could watch the water show from our room. That was fabulous. However, the others in our group didn’t get lucky with a view.
Cirque shows haven’t reopened yet. I hope they’re reopened by Sept.
The Hoover Dam was also underwhelming. So far all the visitor center, museum, and tours there are still closed.
We really enjoyed the Grand Canyon Skywalk and eating in the restaurant there facing the canyon.

We went 2 yrs ago. It was our 1st trip as empty nesters. We stayed at the Flamingo, which was ok. It was clean, and handy. Right in the middle of the strip, so everything was easy to walk to, and a great price. I wonder if there is some sort of special on staying at the Venetian/Palazzio right now, because the last 2 people I know that have gone they have stayed there. I think staying at the Bellagio would be super fun if we could afford it.
My dh and I do NOT party, and do not gamble. In fact, we dropped like 5$ in a machine, and that was it! So everyone was like. WHY would you guys go to Vegas then? Shows and FOOD! I don't know if shows are all open yet. I know when my brother went last month, I don't think there was anything open yet. When we were there we went to the final show of Donny and Marie, and Le Reve, which is Cirque type show in water. Both were great. The other night we went to Piano bar, which was fun. We ate at some wonderful places. Hell's Kitchen, Giada's, Emerils New Orleans fish house, Mon Ami Gabi, Hash house a go-go, and my dh HAD to have in and out burgers. There are just so many options! and I'm a foodie, so this was about the best opportunity I had to eat at celebrity Chef's restaurants, so I was in my glory!

We did enjoy The Mob Museum.
Dinner at Hell’s Kitchen was fabulous.
If you’re into art, Area 15 is a must. The restaurant inside there, The Beast, was very good.
We enjoyed walking up and down the strip and just seeing all the hotels. Doing all the silly tourist things like going up to the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower, watching the fountains at the Bellagio, gondolas at the Venetian.
Just be aware that a lot of things are still closed. I don’t know how things will be in Sept., obviously, but when we were there capacity was limited to 25%, so reservations and advance tickets were a must.

I agree with others that the Bellagio is just ok. I love staying at the Venetian /Palazzo. The rooms are suites so there’s lots of room and the entire hotel feels clean. Plus, I love the restaurants.

I’ve never stayed at Bellagio. My favorites (of where we’ve stayed) are Cosmopolitan, Wynn, and Mirage. Cosmopolitan has balconies, which is a rarity in LV. We loved sitting on our balcony in the fancy hotel robes, drinking wine, watching the Bellagio fountains, and listening to the street music from across the street at Paris.
Over the years I’ve also stayed at Flamingo, Excalibur, and Bally’s. All just ok. We did have an excellent steak dinner at a restaurant in Excalibur, though.

Aria and the Venetian are my picks for nice accommodations. If you want budget but still a good location, I actually like Treasure Island. The lobby sucks and the restaurants are nothing special, but the rooms (at least the two I’ve been in) were renovated and plenty nice. It’s right across from the Venetian, so you get that action. And if you like Cirque, I think the show is still there. It’s also across from the big mall, if you want to go shopping.
I’ve never personally stayed at the Cosmopolitan but I liked the room I saw as well.

It has probably been 18-19 years since I have been, but pre-kids, dh and I went a bunch. I think we liked the Paris best?

I like the Cosmo. We once had a balcony overlooking the fountains, really nice. There's my favorite black jack machine there I head to every time I go to Vegas. Also Venetian/Palazzo are really nice.
You might be able to get some really great rates if you book soon (or it may be too late).
I stayed at NYNY in 2009 during the recession, really large room, average by Vegas standards but most hotels on the strip are actually very nice. Paid about $40 per night (plus that icky resort fee)

I like the Bellagio quite a bit but I've only stayed in the rooms which have been renovated. In fact, I always say it feels like coming home. I hated the rooms at Paris. Caesar's was meh. I haven't stayed at the Venetian but I'm considering it for our next trip only because it's currently about half the price of the Bellagio.
I also don't gamble and I'm not much of a shopper although I do like to window shop in Vegas. For me these trips are about the food and outdoor things outside of town like Red Rocks. Mostly the food.

We went a couple years ago and stayed at the Cosmopolitan. We loved it. Great location with lots of convenient things close (shops at Planet Hollywood, Walgreens with a liquor store). Everything about the Cosmopolitan was so cool. I'd love to go back to Las Vegas just to stay there again.

DH has a conference in Vegas nearly every year, and I go every 3-4 years, even though I'm not really a Vegas person.
We stayed at the Bellagio many years ago and really liked it. I'd put it as my favorite Vegas hotel of those we've stayed in, but it may have aged since then. We stayed at the Cosmopolitan on our last trip. It was ok, but I remember thinking then that I preferred the Bellagio. On that trip, we spent the first night at Planet Hollywood and got a view of the Bellagio fountains and the Eiffel Tower. Much cheaper than the Cosmo, even with the view, and still nice enough. I definitely didn't think the price difference was worth it.
We've also stayed at the Aria a couple of times, which I like because it's nonsmoking. My least favorite thing about Vegas is the constant cloud of cigarette smoke.
Really, most hotels in Vegas are nicer than you'll find other places at similar price points.

Las Vegas is trying to be 100% open by June 1st, so all the shows should be up and running by September if all goes well.
ETA - We like to stay downtown because we like to gamble. We want to try the new hotel, Circa. Their swimming pool looks amazing, and the hotel is 21 and up only. But we always try to go to the Bellagio to walk around and look at their indoor garden. I also like their restaurant.

I’ve stayed at a handful of Vegas hotels and the only one I loved was The Wynn.
I’m no Vegas restaurant expert but I did love Mon Ami Gabi. We sat on the front patio with views of the fountains and I just loved the ambiance and food. But that was 10 years ago...

We stayed at The Bellagio a long time ago. We really liked it. I thought it was very pretty and the rooms were nice but it was still fairly new then. The gardens and the fountains were amazing.

We loved the Bellagio. My sister called and asked what kind of mattresses they have and bought one. It was pretty fabulous.
I liked the separate shower and huge tub.

We usually stay at the Cosmopolitan because it's a Marriott affiliated property, so perks & points, but the rooms are quite nice, especially the ones where you can overlook the Bellagio fountains. They have some good restaurants in there, my favorite is Rose, Rabbit, Lie which is a speakeasy style of place with live performers roaming the rooms.
We don't gamble, but we do enjoy the good food & shows that Vegas has to offer as well as the fun stuff outside of town. A surprising favorite Cirque show was the Beatles one. We'd gotten discount tickets and didn't have any expectations, but LOVED it.
If you like shopping consignment, there are some local stores that have super high end items, still pricy but fun to look at.

We love the Venetian. The rooms are great and the pool is beautiful. We now stay at the Wynn for a change but the Venetian is a better location. I prefer where the Venetian is on the strip to the bellagio.

I have been many times, but don't gamble. Caesar's is decent, especially if you can get a room overlooking the Bellagio dancing waters. Other stuff:
Bellagio lobby - Chihully glass ceiling Bobby Flay Mesa Grill Hoover Dam tour is fascinating. Highly recommended. Valley of Fire State Park Red Rock Canyon State Park Neon Museum - old school Vegas signs

The room experience in Vegas really ranges within their own hotels. The Bellagio has rooms that are less expensive and also more expensive. I think most hotels there are like this. You can ask for a nicer room and get a better view and also get a fridge, better furniture, and decorations. We've stayed there several times with friends who have optioned for the more expensive and also less expensive rooms. Even at less expensive hotels like the Flamingo, they have larger and nicer rooms as you go up to the 28th floor. One of the biggest differences I remember from years ago was the MGM. Our first year there we stayed in one tower that was nice and had a decent room. The next year we opted to upgrade and our bathroom was the size of our room the previous year.
We've stayed in the Bellagio and had a cheaper room. It was clean and nicely decorated, but it wasn't what I would call really nice. The hotel lobby is nicer than many of the other hotels. The current flower display next to the lobby is gorgeous.
The MGM used to have an amazing buffet if you are into that. Most hotels don't have buffets open currently.

We've stayed at the Encore for a couple of anniversaries and had rooms overlooking the Strip. We had a great view of the Mirage volcano show a few times reach night. The rooms are beautiful and updated. We've never wanted to stay at the Bellagio because family members who have, have said the same thing---very underwhelming. The outside of the hotel is much nicer than the simple rooms.

I would stay at the Ventian the next time we go. We stayed at the SLS which 2 years ago had just opened. It's at the end of the strip but the monorail runs through it so it was really fast to get down to the busy strip area. It was REALLY quiet and very comfortable and brand new.
We renewed our vows in front of the Bellagio (25 years) and ate dinner at Spago. We reserved a table that overlooked the fountains (there are only 4 of them). It was great. I think there are a lot of better places to stay.

It looks like most of these are closed right now, so I’d call and see if they’ll be open. We are all about the dining experiences and shows so if a lot of them weren’t open we’d postpone our trip. We were at these places in December 2019, and March 2003. Will note 2003 because of potential changes. If you’d like specifics or have questions just let me know! FINE DINING RECOMMENDATIONSRobuchon’s @ MGM. ~ Best meal and service we’ve ever had, by far, and we like nice restaurants. Dessert was a work of art. I could have lived my life eating off the bread cart. And my DH still announces my food when he’s serving it like one of the staff did. “This is your butter made from the very best cows in the upper region of whereverstan.” Very comfortable seating, quiet environment with plenty of space for private conversations. Very expensive but sort of a once in a lifetime thing. Is in the back of the casino right next to Ka, which I also highly recommend. We don’t drink so didn’t have the wine pairings but my cousin did and really enjoyed them. Craftsteak @ MGM. ~ This is Tom Coliccio’s restaurant. The food was really good, but we were expecting excellent. The service was amazing though. Le Cirque @ the Bellagio. ~ Delicious, amazing service. Our server was so good. There was a piece of flatware I was unfamiliar with and so asked, and he was lovely in explaining it to us. We have encountered snobs as these restaurants so it was nice. He even escorted us partially across the casino to the show we were attending (“O” by Cirque de Soleil) because we were cutting it close and he wanted to make sure we didn’t get lost and made it in time. The tables were super close together though. Picasso’s @ the Bellagio ~ (2003) Until we ate at Robuchon’s this was the best meal we ever had, food and service. Just excellent. The atmosphere is fairly quiet, the art (13 Picasso paintings) was lovely and some of the tables have a view of the fountains. Joe’s Seafood @ Caesar’s ~ This came highly recommended and reviewed but we went here our first evening and were underwhelmed. The was good, but not not excellent, and the service was just okay. CASUAL DINING Hexx @ Paris ~ We had brunch there on Christmas. The food was excellent and great service. We ate on the patio and it was the perfect spot to people watch with amazing views of the strip. You have to have a sticky bun. Bouchon @ The Venetian ~ This is Thomas Keller’s bistro. We went there for lunch and enjoyed ourselves. The food was good, but we weren’t blown away. It was super crowded (and loud) and you sit on top of each other. But it was bright and lively. It’s off the beaten path and you have to search to find it. We wouldn’t go out of our way to go here again, but would happily pop in for lunch if we stayed at the hotel. SHOWSI can’t imagine a Las Vegas trip without a Cirque show. Here is a link to their 5 Las Vegas shows. We didn’t go see the Michael Jackson show so can’t guide you there. I highly recommend watching the videos to see which one might interest you more. The theme the music...see what fits your tastes and interests. ’O’ Cirque de Soleil @ Bellagio ~ The stage itself is amazing, a full set of water one minute, the next it’s solid ground, we liked it so much saw it both times. It was my favorite Cirque show for about 16 years Before we saw Ka. ’Love’ Cirque de Soleil ~ If you want a happy, lively show this is it. Pure chaos, in a good way. We didn’t stop smiling. It looked like some of the upper seating might have made you feel a little cut off from the production as opposed to even the highest lower seating. Maybe some peas can weigh in. Le Reve ~ This is a Cirque type show, I believe one of the men involved broke off on his own. Wow. Loved it, one of my favorite shows of all time! It’s in the round, a water based show. Very small venue comparatively speaking. The best seats are actually the top row. Huge comfy seats, spacious seating room (can not over emphasize this), a table for your beverages, and the TV in front of your seats shows what is going on underwater. ’Mystere’ Cirque de Soleil ~ (2003) This was DH’s favorite show until Ka as well. It was our first Cirque experience so of course the physical feats, costumes, set amazed us; but it was the emotional response that still stands out. For whatever reason we felt more involved with the characters. ‘Ka’ Cirque de Soleil ~ Just go. The stage pieces themselves are worth it. Beware, this is a HUGE venue and what seems like might be a mid-range seat isn’t. I’d go close, but not too close because there is a lot to see. Simply amazing show. Sidenote: 2 seats down from us was a woman who sat next to us and spoke a bit with at a restaurant in Aria a few days prior. Given the size of the venue it was quite the coincidence. Mat Franco ~ We had Penn & Teller tickets but found out last minute that one of them wasn’t performing. So we were scrambling to find a replacement and this is what we chose with the peas help. LOVED him. Small show, kind of a cheap set up by Las Vegas standards, but roomy. And we didn’t care. He really got everyone involved. Blue Man Group ~ They were awesome, loved every minute! But if I had to choose between this and some of the other shows I would do those. Simply because they don’t travel, but Blue Man does and they have other permanent locations. We’ve seen them in LV and a couple of other cities in Texas and the shows were very similar. But if you don’t live where a lot of shows travel then I highly recommend seeing them! OTHER ENTERTAINMENTShelby Museum ~ DH loved this, I enjoyed it. Very informative, the guide/docent/whatever was really great and got those listening involved, lots of fine cars to ogle. Golden Knights ~ If you change your dates and like hockey, go catch a game. The fans are amazing! We’ve been to countless professional sporting events out of town and these fans were by far the most welcoming. We loved it anyway, but they took our enjoyment up a notch. (Having a problem with webpage reloading so I am going to save as I update so more information to come) If you’re not set on September, I would recommend going at Christmas. Rooms were super cheap, the weather was really nice, and from what I understand it was less crowded. Our first trip (2003) we stayed in a Presidential Suite at the Bellagio. It was huge with lots of amenities and high quality everything, though our decor was not to our tastes. The master bath was a thing of beauty. But this time we wanted to save money on the room and use it for shows and dining. So we chose The Delano @ Mandalay Bay. Each room is a small suite with a good size bathroom. It’s decor is simple, modern, and good quality. But it’s not luxurious like you’re thinking, but not cheap either. But we loved the set up, having a separate living room and also a powder room available to us. The bed was very comfortable and I loved the bathroom. The tub was huge and I brought nice bath things with me and enjoyed several long soaks in the dark. Actually I should call them floats because it was big enough I floated on my back comfortably. Also, there are glass shelves on each side of the sinks which worked out perfectly. We stayed almost a week so it was nice to be able to set up our things and have a clear countertop. However, due to my back and other pain issues we drove everywhere. It’s at one end of the strip so quite a walk. There is a team with a station at the property, but not the main tram. So you’d have to ride it as far as it goes, get off and cross the street (to MGM I believe) and climb on the main tram to go further. But we loved using the car, lots of fancy shows and dinners and I didn’t want to have to walk anywhere after being on my feet for so long.
