This Buzzfeed list of word/phrase origins caught my eye today. I'm sure my kids know most of the ones like "hang up the phone" and "roll down the window" (mostly because we still have a truck with manual windows ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Ivm7lm0DayrhoRpwvCeH.jpg) ). I'm going to ask if they know where CC/BCC comes from. I didn't know a few of these and especially love stereotype: and freelance Do you have any favorites or others to add?

I love word origins. I had no idea about stereotypes.

Cool article! Interesting how many words on that list I have used in my life without giving a second thought to the origins.
And here we would say "wind down the window" instead of "roll". (That's wind rhymes with find, not wind rhymes with pinned.)
The email / bcc one was interesting. I started a thread the other day about emails, and I mentioned bcc in a post and wondered at the time what the second 'c' stood for. I knew it was 'blind copy' but had no idea what the second 'c' stood for.

My dad had me type some of his correspondence as a kid and I had a piece of carbon paper that was used over and over and over.

I still say that I’m “taping” something when I set my DVR.

My husband loves hearing the origin of words. I am passing this along to him.

I was just telling my DD's how I used to have to use carbon paper for some documents years ago.

Thanks for sharing....I LOVE learning these! One of my faves that I looked up long about was the origin of "mind your Ps and Qs." Ahh yes.....carbon paper ! My friends and I loved it when we played school and made several copies of tests for our pretend students. It gave us even MORE papers to mark up with our red pens.

Fun article.
I recently learned where the phrase “jumped the shark” originated. Interesting stuff!

Just a few years ago, I learned the phrase, "Lord willing and if the Creek don't rise", is not referring to a flow of water, but to a tribe of Indians called the Creek. If they were on the warpath, you would not be able to carry out plans.
