I haven't been here in forever and searched the board and didn't happen across a thread on this so please forgive me if it's repetitive . . .
I have roughly a kabillion photos in icloud and one of my 2021 goals is getting them onto my external hard drive. I organize them there in folders by year, then month, then event/date taken.
So I started downloading batches (literally 1,000 photos at a time) of photos last week from icloud and sat down to start sorting them today only to find that icloud didn't preserve the original "date taken".
There has to be a way around this, right?
Lesson learned, in the future I plan to offload my photos directly from my phone at the end of each month.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

are the original dates in the metadata for the photos? Once the photos are downloaded/transferred and I view "Properties" it shows the download date and not the date taken. But while still in iCloud, yes, the original dates are there.
