Asleep yet. I’m just venting. I had to stop my arthritis med and antidepressants so I’m in so much pain. They also said it would be smart to skip my sleeping pill so I could wake up in time if I needed to use the bathroom. The result is a total nightmare. I can’t get up because i want to eat and drink and can’t. At least I stopped shitting. An hour ago. Such a painful night of tossing and turning. When I get back home I have plans to eat and rest. I’m exhausted.

Oh my gosh! That sounds miserable. I hope that you can fall asleep for a little while before your alarm goes off in the morning.

Yup. I hate the things with a passion. I had to get up at 2 am to start the second round of the mix and never went to sleep before that. I never did stop pooping until they wheeled me in. I came home and slept 3-4 hours. I have 7 more years to go before my next one and I pray that they come up with something easier before that happens!
May your scan be clear and a nice nap afterwards restore you. Bonne chance!

So sorry. I think it's not worth it to sleep now. You will be able to sleep during the procedure, yeah? I have to get a colonoscopy soon. Not looking forward to that. Take care!

I made it to wake up time so yayyy. Yes I’ll be put to sleep for it and I’m hoping I’ll be tired afterwards. Hubby taking us out for supper tonight and I’ve already got my order ready. This is my first. My mom had colorectal cancer so I am way past due for my scan. Next time I’ll have more clear liquids to sip, and butt paste.

Good luck! Best advice I got was to eat less food for a few days before.

I’m exhausted. My DH went through that last week, and he was so miserable. Had to stop all his meds (sleeping, Parkinson's) and the prep was horrifying. Took almost 4 days to get him back to normal. I'll never understand why there has been no significant change in the way that we test for colon cancer. I have a friend in Canada and she laughs every time she hears about this hell. It's difficult enough when there's no underlying conditions - I hate the prep, but it isn't torturous for me - I take zero meds and am healthy as a horse. For those who have underlying conditions and need to pause their meds for it? Horrifying. I'm so sorry you had such a rough night.

I didn’t have to deal with the lack of meds, but the lack of sleep was horrible. I had to take a pregnancy test, though. After maybe 1.5-2 hours of sleep, I woke up too early to go in, but I had to go so badly I was near tears. I tried to go just a little bit but that’s really hard! Dh and I left early enough that I was about an hour early for my appointment. It was worth it.
When you come home you can get some blissful sleep!
I’m up this morning after about four hours sleep. It’s l going to be a great workday. 😏 My dh’s snoring was particularly bad last night and I was so close to moving elsewhere.

That is certainly a no fun way to spend your night. Wishing you an easy peasy scan and a most excellent nap.
I was super nervous when my turn came. I looked up all kinds of tips to make it easier. I'm pretty sure the tip that made all the difference was following a low residue diet for a few days before. Basically there was really just not anything to clear out by the time my prep started. Most of the other things I had in place in the bathroom, I didn't even need.

i'm so sorry and hope you're out of there soon. I had my first colonoscopy yesterday and like kibblesandbits, am pretty healthy. I can't imagine having to forego vital meds. My doctor told me it was fine to take my sleeping pill so I slept pretty ok the night before - aside from being awake from 4-5, knowing i needed to get up at 5 and take the 2nd part. They say it 1000 times, but the prep is so much worse than the procedure itself! I'm also glad that mine was super early in the morning, we were eating brunch by 10am. Good luck!!

DH was able to do the at home Cologuard test instead of having an in person procedure this time. (He previously had a traditional one years ago that came back fine.) There was no prep at all, he just had to do it early in the week so it could be sent back on a weekday. Easy peasy. I’m kind of surprised that they don’t use that test as the default for most people. It’s way less expensive and WAY less involved.

I didn't have to stop my meds ahead of mine. And while the prep wasn't a joy, the procedure itself was nothing. I'm glad I had a colonoscopy because they found 3 very small polyps and removed them - otherwise they would've been undetected and grown.

However, Cologuard isn’t great for detecting precancerous polyps and with a colonoscopy, most polyps they do find can be removed on the spot.

I’m in Canada and have had 2 colonoscopy and 2 barium enemas and from the description here sounds no different unless they changed things recently. My last colonoscopy was in 2008 and I vividly remember that hellish night.

Prep seems to vary a little depending on which one is used, maybe? Or the doctor's specific procedures?
I had to start drinking mine around 6:00 pm, finish half the gigantic container, and then start the second half at midnight, and drink 32 ounces of other liquid once I'd finished. I napped maybe 45 minutes before midnight, but after midnight I literally could not leave the toilet until about 3:30. I slept on the couch near my desginated bathroom, but was only able to sleep a couple of hours, if that.

The prep is the awful part. You nap through the procedure. I'm having mine done in the hospital w/a nasal gastric tube, because I can't drink the prep. Top that for torture. EEK!

I was actually told I could start between 4:00-6:00. I started around 6:00, but I would start earlier if I had to do it again. Not that it would have mattered much-- the midnight thing pretty much killed any ideas of decent sleep.

Ugh!! I got the pleasure of this torture last week! I told them they better see/get what they need to this time because NEVER again!! I got the all-clear too, and have to go back in 10 yrs. I too am hoping that in that time they find some other way to do this!
Funny thing though, I went through the horror of the prep on Thursday, had my procedure at 10 am on Friday, and by 1:00 was on the road to St. Joe, Mo to see my DD (5 hrs one way) for the weekend. Dr. told me no driving... Ooops!! LOL Ok, seriously though, I was totally fine, and awake, I wouldn't have gone if I had felt even the least bit "off". I was driving my brand new car too!

You're lucky! I felt fine, too. Enough to move my car into the garage, when I promptly drove into the garage wall. Fortunately I didn't do much damage, but feeling fine apparently didn't equate with being fine LOL.

I was mostly done with the after effects by 8 or 9 pm. Then I had the 8 ounce bottle of Golightly or whatever it is that morning early. It would just be cruel to make someone drink another huge jug of that Gatorade mix at midnight!

Through my health insurance, I have a choice of doing the mail-in test every year, or a colonoscopy every 10 years. I'm in the US.
I put off doing the mail-in kit, and then when I opened it and read the instructions, I realized it was quick and easy and not disgusting at all. It requires no prep. For me at this point in my life, I'd rather spend about 20 seconds at home once a year rather than do the prep and then be under anesthesia. I like the idea of getting screened every year and getting the "all good." Everyone's situation is different, but for now, I'd rather have more frequent checks, and only go under anesthesia if a potential problem shows up.

Because I followed the low residue diet for 4-5 days before hand, I drank all my prep, evacuated that in one fell swoop and that was the end of that, I was in bed asleep by midnight with nary a rumble.

I'm so sorry that you had such a difficult time, hopefully you're happily sound asleep right now I'm on the every 5 year plan due to recurring polyps. For those who have had a difficult time with the prep, did y'all follow a "colonoscopy prep diet" for 3 days beforehand? If not, I highly recommend it (google for info). Each of my preps have been very easy. Also, I take several daily medications (including Trazodone for sleep) and have never been told not to do so the day/evening before. I wonder why they instructed you not to take yours?!?

She says they do a regular stool sample/mail in kind of thing. Sounds like the Cologuard. My husband did that and it was pretty easy. It does not really show polyps though.

You "win" hands down. The prep is crappy (pun intended) enough at home in your own bathroom. Doing it in the hospital would he much, much worse. Ultimately, there are worse things in life than colonoscopy prep. It is worth having done because colon cancer is no picnic.
