I don’t think hot fudge came in a can. I think only the syrup did, but it did get thick when refrigerated.
The first ice cream toppings I remember were in those glass jars.

I remember both the Hershey's syrup in a can and a hot fudge in a can. I can't remember who made it. I also would have guessed Hershey's.

I don't know how to post a picture, so I will try a link: linkMaybe it was this and you just used a yellow lid from the Hershey's can on top?

I am glad some of you remember it, makes me feel less crazy.
It was absolutely not the syrup.
It must have been a different brand, but funny that most of us who recall it thought it was Hershey's too. I can so distinctly see the can in my head.
It is such a distinct memory in my head (like the edible dough story I shared on the sears catalog thread) I just can't believe I made it up.
Thanks everyone for looking.

The first link is absolutely the fudge I remember. It was absolutely not the syrup, and I didn't even realize until this thread it didn't still come in a can.

View Attachmentou've got me curious, so I googled and found this, is this it? That design is closer to the picture in my head, but I think that is still syrup? I know 100% I am not confusing syrup with fudge.

I remember it too. My mom & dad loved it and one can was used in one night (there was 6 of us).

Now it's driving me crazy so I contacted Hershey's & asked. I will let you know what I find out. And, folks ~ this is why I 💚 the peas.

Hershey’s syrup doesn’t come in a can anymore? nope... it's just not the same in a squeeze bottle. It came in a can until just a year or two ago, because I remember buying it in the can not that long ago. As a kid whenever I used it, I would pour myself a spoonful (or two) of Hersheys syrup from the can and eat it just off the spoon, like medicine. Then I'd pour it onto the ice cream. (okay, I confess- I still do this, lol!)

Now that I went down the Hot Fudge portal... I am going to make the Better Than Sex cake! I always use a jar of Mrs. Richardson's hot fudge on it.. It's so good, and that cake is so rich! I am only good for about 1 piece (but I could probably eat the whole dang thing!) I just make a box mix chocolate cake. Poke decent sized holes in it after it has cooled a few minutes and pour a warmed can of sweetened condensed milk on top. Let cool some more and pour a warm jar of Mrs. Richardson's Hot Fudge on that. Damn. Damn!

It was always in a can growing up. On Saturday nights my mom always made chocolate sundaes w/that can. That was our dessert night. I'm trying to remember the hot fudge sauce.

I remember this, too - especially heating it up by putting the opened can in a water bath on the stove. It was nothing like Hershey's syrup at all. It was very thick, and sweeter. I don't remember the yellow lid, but I remember the label as being yellow.

I am wondering if the changed the formula when they change to the squeeze bottle. Made it thinner so it would squeeze out easier.

We had cans of the syrup, but we weren't fancy enough to have the hot fudge sauce. We never opened the can with a can opener and instead used a bottle opener. We couldn't lick the lid until it was empty.

I remember Hot Fudge Sauce in a can. I can swear it was Hersey’s as well. We loved ice cream - so much so that my Dad would stop at Farr’s Ice Cream once a week and bring home a 5 gallon bucket each week.
That person at Hersey’s who responded is too young and didn’t do their research. The label was yellow and had a sundae on it.

I am wondering if the changed the formula when they change to the squeeze bottle. Made it thinner so it would squeeze out easier. No syrup was there too. My cousin didn't like the fudge so he had syrup. We always used the can opener that made a triangle cut on that. One on each side. They were definitely different.

I am wondering if the changed the formula when they change to the squeeze bottle. Made it thinner so it would squeeze out easier. Nope. Back in the day, they had both kinds - the syrup in the can with the brown label and the fudge with the yellow. I never cared for the syrup on ice cream, but it worked really well in homemade malts, and for chocolate milk. The fudge was just plain awesomeness in a can - better than the Smuckers in the jar. Very close to the Mrs Richardsons.

I remember it too, although I can't recall if it was syrup or the fuge, but I do remember I didn't like it for chocolate milk because it sunk to the bottom of your glass in a thud and refused to mix with your milk. But, if we ran out of Quik that's what we'd wind up using.
Mom rarely bought ice cream because we'd eat it in a day. The Otter Pops would sit uneaten in the freezer because they were gross to eat. Those were the days we'd have the change pre-sorted all ready on the side table so when we heard the ice cream truck coming.

Was the can like this?My grandpa owned an IGA store in the 70s so my dad had to stock shelves. He hates going to the grocery store because he thinks of the packages like when he stocked shelves so he can never find items. I will have to ask him if he remembers.
