Multiple private schools and public schools in my area are coming out “masks optional” come summer programming. I have read their communication. It doesn’t specify its only for outdoors. What has changed with guidance? Just people are fed up? But has actual guidance from pediatricians changed? I don’t see that the CDC has changed. What’s the source to back this up?
Outdoors with some distance of 3’ or so, I would be willing to let my kids not mask. But the kids here are literally inches from faces, yelling and screaming without masks.
It was the religious schools a few months ago but now it’s the secular, private prep schools also.
My area is 9 daily cases per 100,000 people. So it is down from where we were.
I’m dying here for guidance on what rules to live by in my community when no one follows the protocols. Kids this age are not eligible for a vaccine yet. I have a 5 & 10 year old so it will be months before they are eligible!! How are we going to hang in there?
Do other parts of the country follow the CDC guidance? Or everywhere blowing past it?

Public schools here have been "masks encouraged" (i.e. NOT required) since they started the school year back in August. I believe most people started the year wearing them but compliance quickly dropped off - especially at the high schools.
So - no following of CDC guidelines here.

After all these years and I still don’t know how to tag in a thread.
Do you find that the cases have increased in children with the non-masking?
I read that 22% of covid cases are children. There are kids who get lint covid. But I still can’t get a handle on how many that is. And if this is any data on which kids get the long covid.

Where are you at? I'm sure we'll be the last state (WA) to loosen mask restrictions. I think many places are starting to say masks aren't mandatory, though. I can't fathom the towns across the border in Idaho are not mandating masks- except for Moscow- which is right across the border from me. But my aunt in Idaho posts their schools doing musicals and stuff, and no one wears masks. It's so weird. At least we'll be starting to see most of the teens vaccinated soon. I'm hoping that will mean that next school year will be mask free. I'm still hanging onto my mask during flu season, though.

our schools only required masks (or face shields) for staff and teachers not students starting back in August when school resumed. From pictures I've seen - there are very few masks. That was a big factor in our decision to first do distance learning and then switch to home-schooling. Hoping DD14 can get vaccinated before August so she can go to high school and I don't get another year of teaching maths - Algebra I was more than enough 'fun' for me

I'm in So Cal, OC to be specific which has been very red although leaning more purple. We have been in in person since Oct but still require masks for student and staff.

I hope they don’t relax it here before the younger kids can be vaccinated. My kid will be starting middle school next year with probably 400-500 other 6th graders coming from various elementary schools, and very few if any of them will be vaccinated yet at that point.
I’ve mentioned before on here that in the last two weeks alone I have received FIVE separate emails from my kid’s elementary school principal stating that they have received notices from the dept of health that there have been multiple confirmed cases of Covid in that school alone with potential exposure dates ranging from April 23-30. Some of those days were the days the virtual kids were scheduled to be in the building for standardized testing. Yeah, NO. I opted out of that shit in a hot minute for my kid who has been virtual learning at home all year, and now I absolutely don’t regret that decision for one second. It seems like it’s spreading like wildfire through my kid’s grade level, and that’s with masking. To drop that mandate now would seem pretty reckless to me.

I know of someone fired for refusing to wear a mask (and rightfully so)
I think masks should still be required for a while.

Our schools have been mask optional since (maybe) February break - maybe since they came back in January. No real rise in cases. Teachers still wear their masks.

We are mask required here (at least in my district in Western NY.) Cases are up among young people but our Health Department is saying they are flattening; I am not sure I believe them. I will say I personally believe the new cases are not from schools as they are doing everything they can to keep the students 3 feet (or is it 6 I'm not sure anymore) apart and wear masks. The new cases are from gatherings our side of school in my opinion.
Edited to add: But that doesn't mean the school should make masks optional.

Private school in OC California and masks are mandatory for everyone. We've been in person the entire school year and have had very few cases (under 20) the entire year. I haven't heard anything about summer or next years plans yet.

School has been in session here since last August. The mask requirement was removed the end of March. All is pretty good here. 7 day average for the entire county is at 2 cases. We were at 0 for a while.

My youngest son's private school just went to mask optional this week. All of the adults have been vaccinated. They are still distancing as much as possible & not gathering multiple classes (like for chapel).
My oldest son's school district will likely be the last in the state to relax on masks...I wouldn't be surprised if they still require them in the fall...

We are mask required until the end of the school year. I am not sure what will happen after that. The mask mandate ends in Minnesota July1 or when we hit 70% vaccinated 16+.
Apparently, they will discuss what schools will look like 21/22 over the summer, but that there will still need to be a distance model offered next year. Beyond that....we don't know. I would say masks will be required until we can get 70% K-12 vaccinated, but who knows?

Some people changed it and you need to know what it is. Then type @ in front of the original user name and you will have tagged someone when you post.
