Saw a women in Target yesterday using a basket. She was holding it awkwardly and had about 10 items in it. Got me thinking how I never use a basket even for one or two items. What is your choice for a few items? Shopping cart or basket?

I would be that woman with a basket.
I have to be able to gauge if I can carry home what I'm buying.
Using a cart could easily let me over buy. Carrying it as I shop is an accurate way to discern if I can make it home with my purchase. (I walk all the way/ take the bus & walk home, so I do have to carry it all).

Why not? If I'm only getting a couple things it'll probably be quite light and I won't be carrying it for long and I won't be as likely to add in stuff I didn't intend to buy.

If I've convinced myself that I'm only getting a few things I will use a basket...and then end up filling it too full because I find other things I didn't know I needed. Most of the time I know I will need a cart in grocery stores or target.

If I know I am only going out for one or two things, I won’t even grab a basket. Usually keeps me from impulse buys. Not all the time, but usually. Sometimes I’m grateful to find an abandoned cart (usually at Target, lol.)

Cart, juggling my purse and a basket is a pain. I never seem to get out of the store with only a ‘few’ items, there’s always something on sale or I remember something that wasn’t on my list. Some stores in my area now have the mini 2 tier carts, bigger then a basket, smaller then a full size cart.

Cart always. My stores have the newer, smaller carts. Perfect for me to push around - as a walker ! A cart truly helps me to balance myself.

I put other. My 2 main stores have smaller carts perfect for a few items. It is in between a regular cart and the basket.

cart usually, unless just grabbing a couple of items. i carry a backpack, not a purse so not much juggling.
however, grabbing a basket usually ensure lots of good (and likely heavy stuff) will be on sale. or multiples will be one sale $2 each or 3 for $5.... this also occurs when i walk and not drive to the grocery store.
we have the little carts or big carts, so unless a big shop, i try to get the little "sportier" version.

It's rare that I grab a basket to use. Typically I use the smaller shopping carts many stores around here provide. Although I do amaze myself at how much I can load into one of the small carts! More than once they have had to go get a larger cart to hold all the bags once I check out! LavenderLayoutLady - Have you thought about getting one of these Rolser shopping trolleys? We used them when living in Paris and they really are handy to have. They even make stair climbing models so that riding the bus with it would not be an issue.

I chose other because it really depends on what those items are. Maybe I only need two things but those two things are a giant pack of TP or paper towel and a gallon of milk, and there’s no way I’m carrying those two items around in my hands or in a basket. It’s just too heavy/bulky/awkward, so I get a cart. If those two things are a bottle of shampoo and a bag of chips, I don’t even need a basket for that. But most often, I only shop at a two places (Target, usually need a cart anyway and Costco, DEFINITELY need a cart) and since I only go to those places when I need a bunch of stuff I generally use a cart.

I like the basket option when it’s feasible because I can maneuver through the store easily. I live near my two favorite grocery stores so I sometimes pop in three or more times per week for just an ingredient or two. With a basket. I can typically breeze in and out faster.

I’ll use a basket, but love it when there’s a small cart. That’s my top pick. But for Target? Always a cart! You never know what you will find (and “need”!). I’m days away from my first Target trip in almost 2 years and I’m so excited!

I put 3 baskets in a cart.
Keeps my things organized and when I get to checkout I only have to lift 3 baskets onto the belt instead of unloading my items one by one.

My problem with the baskets is that I think I am only going to get a few things but it ends up being more. Then it is heavy and awkward. I prefer the smaller shopping carts if I think I am only getting a few things.

Do you not take your items out of the basket? They always have the spot to put your empty basket at the bottom of checkout belt where you load...like they want you to empty you own basket. Hahaha. If I use a basket I still empty it onto the belt.

Before I would empty it, and place it in the spot under the belt.

Our grocery store has big and small carts, no baskets. I never grab the baskets you pack. I will do the pull behind baskets. I tend to grab a cart because then you'll end up grabbing more or something big or heavy and then awkwardly packing it.

Cart. I'm that lady leaning on the cart for support meandering down the aisle, and before Covid, sipping on a fountain drink. It's an excursion! I also like to use the cart to examine merchandise more closely by stretching it out for review. I've tried the basket thing but it just isn't me. I think if I was more of a get in get out girl (that's what he said), I might use the cart more.

I nearly always use a basket, as I know I will be carrying it all home on the train, so I never buy a lot in one trip. The only time in the past year that I’ve used a cart was when that was how my grocery store was controlling numbers in the store - you could only enter with a cart.

I live alone and shop almost every day so I only have a few items to pick up ... I use a basket At Costco I use a cart because I have large items like laundry detergent and toilet paper ... but I only go there once per month ...

Fewer than 10 items and not bulky - I carry them or use a basket on wheels Few items but bulky - I use a shallow trolley Lots of stuff - big trolley Shopping at Aldi - only options are carrying my items or using the only size of trolley they have (big). No baskets of any sort.

Target, Winco and Walmart I grab a cart because those are going to be big trips. Most other places I get a basket.

Always a shopping cart. Even if I am only buying one item, I get a shopping cart.
I prefer to shop as hands free as possible. Although one hand/wrist, has the purse strap wrapped around it, while it sits in the front of the cart.

Ideally, I like the tiny carts — the ones that are the size of two small baskets stacked on top of each other, if you know what I mean.
I like to be agile, and I don’t like a large cart weighing me down if I don’t need it.

It depends on what I buying and how I am shopping. If I am just running in for a couple of items and plan to leave as soon as I grab those items, I’ll get a basket. If I plan to wander the aisles, I’ll grab a cart or if I know my items are big/heavy.

Depends on how much or what I am purchasing. The emergence of the small carts has been more than welcome.
