Here in Santa Barbara county we have many vegetation fires weekly and sometimes multiples daily along the freeway. We have been mostly very fortunate in that wind conditions have allowed them to be put out by our wonderful firefighting teams before serious harm to surrounding neighborhoods.
I have an app that notifies me of these incidents, and they are alarmingly frequent. My heart aches for those living in the streets and bushes of our cities and towns and I believe we must find a housing solution for those without homes (very complicated situation, huge convo for another day!).
IS THIS HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA TOO?

In the late fall and winter, some were started in the river bed and wash (Santa Ana) and empty lots that have wild growth - bushes and flowers. In both my city and in Riverside county, the riverbed/wash fires came right up to homes.
The bad ones last year were started by gender reveal parties and lightning.
Our city is trying to find a solution for the homeless population. But so many are 9n drugs and don't want to follow rules.

Don't get me started on idiotic, polluting and sometimes dangerous gender reveal parties. ugh.

In Sacramento we have the American River Bike Trail where there is a large homeless population. My partner is a firefighter and every year, almost daily in the summer, they fight grass fires along the bike trail started by the homeless.

I'm sorry to hear this and also very grateful to your partner and their colleagues! Firefighters are heroes!

yes. hobo fires happen all the time. they tie up traffic on freeways and endanger surrounding property and people. the days of 1-tent homeless camps are gone. there are entire villages of tents and personal belongings. it's not a surprise to hear of a sig-alert on the freeway because the brush next to it is on fire. this will get especially bad when the santa ana winds kick up near all the dry brush/encampments.

We don't have homeless encampments along the freeway. We do get roadside fires that are started from catalytic converters or tossed cigarettes.
Most homeless encampments in our area are in canyons or dry/overgrown riverbeds and there has been a problem with winter fires in those areas for years. None have gotten out of hand, but they are scary for nearby homeowners.

I think the homeless here are away from the freeways but they cause fires that endanger homes all the time. I wish there was an answer. Our police work closely with our homeless and know most by name but sadly most don’t want help. Those that do want help can get it. Most are addicted in one form or another and know they need to go treatment to get help which they don’t want to do. I’m sure many are mentally ill as well but there isn’t much help for that.
I am so dreading fire season.

Not by the highways in my area. Here, the homeless camps are right by the river. And yes, there are fires in them year round.

We have had fires on the highway roadside almost every day for the last two weeks for this reason here in the Central Valley.
