An acquaintance posted this photo on FB. Is it a trick of the light or would you say something? It's both eyes as you can see. I think the baby is 2-3 months old. I cropped the photo for privacy but grandma and uncle are in the picture too and there eyes are barely red. The baby is at their waist height and I think the camera was pointed up at the adults so the light was at an angle on the baby. I looked at other pictures she's posted of the baby and didn't see anything like this. But I'd feel horrible if I could have said something and didn't. And if I should, I don't have a clue how to say it, being as she's just an acquaintance.
**UPDATE** they took the baby to an Opthalmologist and all is well. I am so relieved, I cried when I found out.

That is tough. I know 2 children with Retinoblastoma and know how serious it can be. The earlier the diagnosis the better. I am not sure how you would approach this with parents - it could be very tricky. I am guessing that a great many people don't know about the warning signs, but I would be compelled to mention it to the parents somehow.

This is a tough one and my vote is it is better to say something. As you stated, how to say it is the problem. Maybe... I'm not trying to scare you but the white in the babies eyes indicates there might be a very serious problem that needs to be checked with your pediatrician immediately. Here is a good website from a major childrens hospital in Los Angeles that encourages people to spread the word of the glow in ones eyes. Maybe you could add it? www.chla.org/site/c.ipINKTOAJsG/b.6298193/k.8A57/Know_About_the_Glow__White_Glow__Childrens_Eyes__The_Vision_Center.htm#.VGl68fq9K0cIt also covers the test that should be run (a red reflex test) and might make it easier to approach your friends. There are other causes of Leukocoria (the glow in the eyes) beside retinoblastoma but all need treatment asap.

If anyone had said anything to me about this I would have been grateful and RUN to our ped. Even if it was just an acquaintance...I would make the call. My DS had a runny eye (and it ran every time he had a sniffle) and we took him to 3 doctors for that. (Yeah MIL was superstitious) and if I had prior knowledge that this could have been something very serious I would have been most appreciative.
Please make the call.

There is no harm in sending a Facebook message about the possibility, IMO. I think it's usually just one eye, isn't it, so this probably is a flash or photo problem...but what if it wasn't? No harm in getting it checked, right! I would want someone to tell me.

I think I would make the parents aware and suggest they get the baby checked out.

I remember reading a story about two friends who became friends through the internet on a parenting website. One lady noticed this in her friends pic and told her to check it out. It actually turned out to be this and saved her daughters life.
So I say better safe than sorry!

Thanks. I went ahead and private messaged her, said I noticed the glow and directed her to a website that I thought would have more info and ended by saying I really hoped it was nothing. I reaalllly, reaalllly do hope it turns out to be nothing.
