Consider this a reminder, especially if you have a computer with Windows.
The recent update looked like it had killed my computer. The screen was black, wouldn’t turn on, wouldn’t turn off (it actually appeared to be running, even though the screen was black, but I couldn’t get it to do anything, and it felt like it was overheating).
DH suggested that I press and hold the power button for awhile, which forced it to finally shut down after a couple of minutes. I left it to rest for awhile then turned it on, and thankfully came up, with the message that it was doing a Windows update. The update must have initiated itself automatically, because I had been delaying it. Thankfully, after the update finished installing, my laptop returned to normal, and I am now backing up all my files.
I love my PC, but this isn’t the first time that a Windows update didn’t go right.
Back up, back up, back up!

It's been a while. Thanks for the reminder. Glad everything turned out ok for you.

I am now completely backed up to my iCloud at all times. I’ve lost too many things over the years due to accidental deleting or failed EHDs.
It’s a good reminder.

I'm glad you were able to save your files!
I just started backing up my laptop to my external hard drive. I knew it had been awhile, but I was surprised to see 2017 as the last time I did it. I think DH backed up my files to his computer in 2019 though.
It's going to take awhile. I guess I'll be Peaing on my phone tonight. I'd better plug it in.

I owned a brand new laptop for one short week before the Windows update destroyed it. Seriously. I was on the phone with tech support for three hours. I returned it and bought another. I've been postponing the update AND I haven't saved anything on my laptop. I'm afraid it will happen again. 😬

It's a good reminder and I'm glad you didn't lose anything. I'm probably only a couple of months behind in backing up after a scare with my EHD that thankfully didn't die, but I bought a new one and backed up the full drive anyway. Adding a reminder to my to do list for this weekend.

Ugh, I don't miss Windows updates... That must've been really stressful. I put backups on my weekly to do list. Every Sunday I back up to one or other or both of my EHDs. Since I put it on my weekly list and put a recurring reminder on my phone I've been able to keep up with it and almost never go 10 days without backing up (my laptop also reminds me if I haven't backed up to a particular EHD for 10 days). A lot of my stuff is backed up in other ways too, google photos, iCloud, etc.

My PC backs up nightly to a Buffalo external drive. Yes, it could fail but the likelihood of it and the PC hard drive failing at the same time is remote. iPads automatically back up to the cloud, toggle in Settings.
Automatic daily backups aren’t that difficult to set up to the Cloud or an external hard drive. Or a tech could help remotely - ours takes over the PCs remotely and hasn’t had to be physically present in years. (Permission has to be granted on the PC for a session; we’ve used the same techs for ages.)

As a former IT desktop support/network administrator, I approve of this message. Backup your data at least once a week if you don't make frequent changes.

I had been postponing the update, so I thought I was safe, but I accidentally left my computer on and unattended, so the update happened while I wasn’t watching. Thankfully, all ended up okay, but I seriously hate how often Microsoft thinks it needs to update. I’d much rather have far fewer updates that they have thoroughly cleared of bugs, especially those that kill computers. I do try to back up fairly often to my external drives, but this one caught me off guard and at a bad moment. Hopefully I have learned my lesson.

I'm glad you didn't lose anything! We use an automatic back-up service and our phones automatically back up to our google photos. But I need to check in on our back up service because our computer fried itself and we need to be sure we have everything.

Windows updates are necessary, but it is not really as much a chore as some make it out to be. When the notice comes up, just ignore it. When you shut down it will give the options to Shut Down or Update and Shut Down. Do the 2nd one and walk away. When you next turn the computer on, again just walk away. You will have time to eat breakfast, vacuum the house, and mow the lawn before it is ready to use. Then you will be able to recall the days of 256 dial-up connections.

I love my Mac's Time Machine. Backups every hour, no effort required. It's saved my bacon more than enough times to pay for the cost of the external drive. Given how much of our lives have become digital, it's well worth the investment to ensure you have critical things in triplicate (including at least one off-site), and automated regular backups.
