It’s not unusual for us to check 10 bags. I’m very efficient at packing clothes. One suitcase is all toiletries. One is the coffee/breakfast bag. One is the blankets and pillows bag. Some are empty because we shop a lot on trips, so we’ll need them coming back. Okay now I’m curious about another thing. What kind of vehicle do you take to the airport that will hold five people and ten suitcases? A bus? 🤔 🤣 When we have traveled by plane anywhere as a family, we try to have a friend drop us off so we don’t have to pay for parking at the airport for a week or for a 45 minute Uber/taxi ride each way. I don’t think we know anyone who has a vehicle with that kind of capacity, and we sure don’t. Southwest isn’t a predominant airline here so we have to be careful how many bags of stuff we’re taking with us because we get charged for them. The three of us took two 12 day vacations in 2019 and I think we maxed out at three checked bags and three carry on bags (DD’s carry on was a tiny backpack with just her most important things inside) for each trip, and DH grumbled about even bringing that much! Popping back in to add that I hate lugging a bag around to carry on. I’d much rather check it. That works out well when I pack a case too large for the overhead bin, even for a weekend trip. DH has a billion frequent flyer miles from work so we get to sit in the United Club when we fly. I love dropping my giant bag with TSA and heading for free booze while we wait for our flight. I feel so bougie. 😂 My carry-on is a small backpack - 18.5"x13"x8" 7kg. I would carry it even if I had checked luggage so I might as well put everything in it. It meets even Aer Lingus regional allowances (the most restrictive I've travelled). I've done two weeks in December through central Europe with that backpack with no problems.

Swimsuits are tiny - bring one for each day - doesn't matter and doesn't qualify as over packing in my world.

Yeah, I couldn't do that. I tried to pack that lightly when we went to Europe in 2019, and then I couldn't figure out how to make the washing machines work in Prague, so I was left to rewear all my dirty clothes. Ick.

I’m a carry-on person. Although, for the record, multiple swimsuits is the way to go. I think I usually take 5 or 6, because if I’m at a beach-y place, I am in and out of water multiple times a day, and I don’t want to put a wet swimsuit on. Plus I like having different suits so I don’t get lines.

There is a reason I have a Tide Pen in my purse/bag 100% of the time, and we jokingly celebrate each time I don’t have to use it when eating out. Planning on rewearing anything but the blackest of pants is a no go for me

Having experienced a lost (well, never got on the plane) bag for a trip where we had luggage needed for two pall bearers, I have learned that a decent sized personal bag or carry on is essential. Buying dress clothes two hours after you land for a funeral and family get togethers is not cheap.

I don't, but my son does and it drives all of us NUTS! LOL. We got a rack for the top of our car so we don't have to fight with him about it this summer on our trip. DH, DD and I all know how to pack light and well to fit the most in the bag for limited space. Then along comes DS who HATES to wear anything more than once (pajamas two nights in a row? are we trying to get him sick???) and needs options based on if he wants jeans or shorts or workout clothes. Sigh. He takes up most of the suitcase and all of his clothes are kind of wadded in there. I usually ask him to just let me put them in the suitcase, but there is no getting around his massive amount of clothes for trips.

No, I'm pretty efficient. Except when I'm unsure what the weather will be like. I hate having to include warm and cool weather clothes. I don't mind re-wearing clothes except underwear and leggings, those I pack extra.
Sundresses and leggings can roll up really small and I'll usually wear a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt on the plane because it's cold on there anyway.
I have a bag of travel liquids that's already ready to go and a bunch of minis for my makeup and a bag with some meds already in it. I can get ready to go quickly.

I always pack too much! Here is the dilemma I am faced with this coming week. We are going on a trip from Florida to Wisconsin, for a family reunion. My husband is leaving Tuesday after work, driving to AL to pick up our son. I am flying from FL to Chicago, O'Hare on Thursday. My husband and kid "should" arrive at my hotel on Thursday. But if things take longer than expected, they may not arrive in Chicago until FridayAM. My husband expects me to fly with just my purse! (He's not making me, that is just his thought). I'm thinking I need to bring pajamas and underwear at least. Then try and figure out what toiletries are essential for one night and what can go in the truck to arrive with my husband! This is killing me! I think I need help from myshelly !

Yes but mostly because I struggle so much with my body temperature. I feel like any time I leave my super hot climate, I need two outfits per day (one for early morning and evening and one for day), and two pajama choices per day. It leads to so much overpacking.

All the time. We are currently on vacation and same setup with a washer and dryer yet I packed way too much. Our 9yo dd wanted to pack her own suitcase so I let her pack it and then checked it. She definitely doesn’t overpack because she had 1 outfit for each day and 1 pair of underwear for each day. I told her she needed to pack at least a few more pairs of underwear for spare. She looked at me in bewilderment and said “I don’t know what you do in your underwear but I only wear 1 each day.” LOL I tried to explain what if it rained or she spills on herself, etc but she still thought it was crazy to pack more than 1 of each article of clothing per day. I pack SO MUCH UNDERWEAR. It's not like I poop my pants all vacation long! Why so much! I have underwear panic. Seriously, me too!!

I guess I didn’t clarify! He means it’s lucky for me that I don’t need to check a bag. I only need a carry on! It still causes me anxiety, with sending stuff with him and still needing stuff he doesn’t get there for the overnight Thursday. I guess I’ll just have doubles of the super important stuff!

I *can’t stand* having sweaty underwear or socks on, and I’m at the age where my internal thermostat is totally worthless. True story, we were working on replacing the siding on our boathouse last weekend and the weekend before that. Two weeks ago it was cloudy and cold. We were outside most of the day. I was wearing jeans and a fleece lined hoodie over a t-shirt and I was still cold. Last weekend, it was 90°+ and humid. 🥵🥵🥵 I had to completely change clothes at least twice both Saturday and Sunday just to make it through the day. It was miserable. ETA: I only half jokingly tell DH I can reliably predict what % the humidity is by how high up my bra the sweat line is.

Yes, definitely. I'll be packing tomorrow for a road trip to WA. We'll be encountering 90+ degree weather on the way up and back down; and 60 degree weather with rain for multiple days while there. So in addition to different clothes for each (hello layers!), we'll have different shoes for each, too. I just learned we'll have a W/D at the AirBnB property we're at for 3 of the days, so that will help for sure!

you check 10 bags? Good god, are there any clothes left in your house when you leave? I'm never so frustrated as when I'm on a plane and see everyone load with umpteen bags strapped around them and then watch as they try to stuff them into various overhead bins, all the while griping about how "terrible flying is". Jaysus. Leave some stuff at home and travel would be much, much easier. On my last flight an older woman walked on with a fanny pack, back pack, shopping bag, and huge purse, banging into every single person on her way down the aisle, then had to unwind all that clobber and try to stuff it into the overheads. She held up the entire line while she divested herself of all her worldly possessions, and was loudly griping that no one was available to "help", and "what are flight attendants for anyway". Meanwhile, the FA was 10 people back in the line that she herself had created. I'm convinced that people would pack more efficiently if they were charged for carry on, not checked bags. It’s not unusual for us to check 10 bags. I’m very efficient at packing clothes. One suitcase is all toiletries. One is the coffee/breakfast bag. One is the blankets and pillows bag. Some are empty because we shop a lot on trips, so we’ll need them coming back. Is this for a camping trip? I usually stay at hotels that provide toiletries, coffee, blankets and pillows. I think I'd stay home if I had to bring my entire house with me.

I won’t use hotel coffee makers or blankets and they never provide enough pillows 🤷🏻♀️ They don’t provide the toiletries I use.

I think I'd stay home if I had to bring my entire house with me. Not Shelley, but for insight into a like-minded traveler; I don’t care for the toiletries provided in even the really nice hotels. I am picky about the ingredients for my hair and especially my sensitive skin. One time using something it doesn’t agree with and my skin can be irritated for a week or more. Or my long hair dried out or weighed down, and then it’s hard to find a suitable replacement without cutting into our vacation time. And they often don’t provide so many toiletries at all (including toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, face soap and lotion, deodorant.) So adding an alternative for the few items they do provide to my toiletries bag is no big deal. The thought of using one of their blankets skeeves me out, because those aren’t easy to wash between guests and they often don’t do it, plus I need a weighted blanket to sleep well and off an on I sleep poorly without my pillow. And I need to sleep well or my pain is much worse, and it’s harder to deal with my bipolar symptoms. And I can probably be packed faster than most people as we keep a suitcase of most needs per-packed (save for clothes), and I have several shelves set up in our closet that makes packing the other things a breeze. All that to say, bringing extra stuff seems like a PITA, but for some people not having what we need is a bigger PITA. Oh, and we are the same with camping! But again, I have boxes of camping items well organized and ready to throw into the car at a moment’s notice. And suit bags with funeral outfits…and so on. I find when you have specific needs and/or are super anal about what you want to take with you to get the most enjoyment out of your trip, it’s best to be prepared

I have gotten really good at packing just what is needed... we just got back from a long weekend at the lake... i came back with 4 swimsuits (broken hot tub) 1 cocktail dress ( we didn't go out to fancy dinner) and 2 dressy tops that i didn't wear... the tops were just extra options... everything else that i packed.. i wore..
We did over buy on food because we sorta flipped the plan... we bought a lot of lunch stuff because we were planning on dinners out... but we ended up doing lunch out and dinners on the grill... no big deal....
