Our monthly school board meeting was taken over by loud, foul-mouthed people, who demanded that the board immediately vote to stop mask wearing in schools, stop any discussion of gender and LGBTQ+ issues, and "...stop teaching Critical Race Theory..." (like it is curriculum or something. They are too dumb to know what they don't know).
One unsavory character walked over to a friend of mine and snapped his fingers in her face and yelled at her to "Stop fucking interrupting me!" The board was stunned. The superintendent just stood to the side and did nothing. This guy and his groupies dominated the meeting by shouting down anyone who objected to their actions. Evidently, this went on for two hours. First board meeting back in person.
Is this happening in your neck of the woods?

No, not about those topics. Our district decided not to renew the football coach’s contract and the wheels.came.off.the.bus. The whole town acted like flipping lunatics and the presentations to the board were over the top.
Through that process, I learned a lot about the board’s function and capability, as well as that of the superintendent and principals. I mention that because you said the super stood to the side and did nothing. In my state, the superintendent doesn’t have the power to do anything. They are little more than a guest just like you and me. Ours can vote in certain instances, but the board chair is the one with the “power” to run the meeting. Also, our board members have to listen to the public for 2 minutes each person and are not allowed to give opinion/comment one way or the other.
I *do* think in general, because of our political climate the past couple years and the stress of the pandemic, people are angrier and are speaking out more.

Not as severe but a few have shown up to speak at board meetings the past few months. And one group for my city on FB have had some horrible posts.
There is also the let our kids breath group for Ca and they have had some small turn outs around state. They need to stop drinking the kool-aid. Race, CRY, LQBTQ+, etc are all Satan's teachings. We need to go back to the white washed lessons. Sigh.
The Brown Act allows any community member to speak. There can be no back and forth banter or comments/questions by board members. Depending on size it is 2-5 minutes.

This hasn't happened in our school district, and I don't know if it will cause we are a predominantly Hispanic community who has been more then overly cautious with our kids and Covid, willing to pull them out and do distance learning rather then send them back. But we are the hardest impacted community as well. So many of us are "essential" workers and us and our kids have already had covid and have lost loved ones to it.
Now I saw on the news the other day the school district on the other side of town, the "nicer" side of town, had a sh!t show of school board meeting over mask wearing and parents who didn't want the kids to have to wear them anymore.
I also saw a bigger town, Phoenix, one of their school districts was fighting over critical race theory. SMH. But this isn't nothing new to our school districts here in our town. We have fought one of our school districts for years who had banned the teaching of Mexican American studies. It went to a lengthy court battle and it was finally deemed unconstitutional. It wasn't our school district, and I would hope ours would embrace Teaching the true history of the United States, like it teaches Mexican American history cause of where we live. We are a school district of minorities, so I'd be surprised if we didn't.
Edited to fix the untied states!! Lmao!! Sometimes it feels like that though!!

Luckily, our school board runs a tight ship. You have to sign in to speak, and your time is limited. If you cause a scene, the police will escort you out.

No.
Our big issue right now is "Open Choice" which would allow students from surrounding, less affluent and less white, towns/cities to send their children, for a fee, to our "better" school system. Most people, given that we're a pretty liberal town, think the diversity would be great. But a few loudmouths are expressing concerns, caged in terms like "would they feel comfortable here?"; "would they be happy here?"; "wouldn't they rather be in their own towns, with their own people?" (the arguments against integration from the 60s and 70s, basically.)
But Critical Race Theory? We have a really educated population who recognize that if educators teach history through the lens of racism, that doesn't mean they are teaching "critical race theory" and we've been teaching Zinn and alternate views on American history for a long time.

Our big issue is a potentially expensive recall attempt against two school board members who apparently didn’t get on the fully-open-the-schools bandwagon quite fast enough. The recall attempt is being run by, get this, the DIL of another school board member. Who is someone I used to vote for, but never again.

There is a lot of anger because we are a blue city in an ocean of red and our city council (excellent) appoints our school board and that makes the people CRAZY. However, if that happened and the head of the school board didn't put a stop to it, I'd like the head of the school board ousted. They should have said, "Enough. We will not have people in anyone's face, nor will we listen to that kind of language. If you cannot behave yourselves, the meeting will be halted and/or police will be called." Your friend must have been terrified.

There's been some grumbling about Critical Race Theory on a local Facebook page with a lot of conservatives--people wondering if it's currently being taught in the local schools. LOL, they're not even teaching any sort of relevant Black history, much less that.

Yep. All of it. Our new superintendent (from January) was vilified for all the same things based on a smear campaign from angry parents in his previous district before he even stepped foot on our campuses. The school board elections that just finished were filled with that garbage too. Luckily the biggest whackadoo didn't get elected but one made it to the board. I live in a red county in a red state so none of this should come as a surprise but it still does.

Yes. It is the same small group of whackos, supported by 2 very vocal board members, that started with reopening schools last summer (we opened fully to anyone who wanted to attend in person in September). Then they were anti-maskers and a return to “normal” school—even when our covid numbers were soaring. Then they wanted to do away with virtual education altogether (even when about 50% of our families were CHOOSING it, because their kids didn’t want to come to school when so many of their friends were at home. The anti-mask argument came to a HEATED climax in April, when one of our board members (who has his doctorate in infectious diseases or something similar) let the anti-mask, anti-science weirdos have it at a board meeting. They came after him HARD. He happens to be Chinese, and they left racist and threatening comments all over his FB, accusing him of being part of the Chinese Communist Party. It got UGLY. Even thought it was this same, fairly small number of parents, they were relentless and LOUD. So it seemed like much more. One of these women is CRAZY. And I don’t mean that lightly. She is truly unhinged. She filed a grievance with the board and had a meeting with lawyers and everything. And then she posted it on YouTube for everyone to see. She was hysterical and crying about the damage being done to her children by masks. Our district reps were so calm and rational and she was a maniac. Her lawyer was clearly embarrassed and kept trying to calm her down. The funny thing—this was in mid-May and our district mask mandate ended on June 1. (I tried to link it for y’all, but apparently she figured out that it did NOT make her look good and she made it private).
And yes….now that they can’t bitch about schools reopening or mask mandates, they’re moving on to CRT and LGBTQ issues. (Another parent threw a huge stink before the pandemic when a local library had story hour done by local LGBTQ group). They’re also all about getting rid of books in the library. Again—it is not that big of a group—but they always seem to get their way. At least they used to…. More people are starting to stand up to them. They’re bullies. Plain and simple.

Not school related but truly awful! Although she could have kids in school. A Ross clothing store manager kept her cool recently after she was confronted with a white woman's racist tirade. www.rawstory.com/white-woman-racist-meltdown/

Here’s an example of some of the comments left on our board member’s FB page. April Brinson is the crazy one. I think she truly believes she is a hero. But she has SUCH a bad reputation among teachers and neighbors. picture upload

We are dealing with it in our district too. Just like others have mentioned, it started against covid safety measures and moved on to LGBTQ+ and then CRT.
Our board has managed to keep the meetings orderly. There are a few regulars who just leave me SMH.

Yes and they are trying to get one of their own elected to the board. Rumor is that is happening here too. The woman who is running supposedly pushed an administrator at the meeting. I'm still wondering why the cops were not called at that point. So, a person who pushes others when frustrated and not agreeing with the opinions of others wants to be part of our school board. Awesome.

Lol, we’re just trying to keep the state from taking us over. We had a vocal group pro-reopening, anti-masks, anti-vaxx, but I haven’t heard boo about CRT in this district. Honestly, the folks who make that kind of fuss usually end up moving to the burbs or going to private school anyway.

Yes and they are trying to get one of their own elected to the board. Several years ago I read a book about how the tea party group planned to get in power. (and it has worked)
#1. Get elected to small offices, beginning with the school board. #2. Move to city councils and get elected there #3. Advance to the state house of representatives. #4. State Senate and governors #5 National levels

Yes. It’s a vocal group of parents who get people riled up and go from district to district in order to disrupt and cause conflict. No, schools are t teaching CRT to your second graders. But it doesn’t matter, because they heard it/saw it somewhere and they’ll never admit that they were wrong.

no, nothing is in person here yet. kids are still doing distance learning.
however, there seems to be some polite rumblings about pushback against the high school learning model of quadmesters that they used last year when kids were in school to try for social distancing as much as possible.
people are rallying for letters to trustees as the board intends to continue with quadmesters in sept when high schools are expected to have in-person classes. but all very polite.
(my son attends an arts high school, there seems to be a higher % of lgbqt+ students... so i can't see people sitting down and letting that fly at a meeting for his school)

The Venn diagram of anti-mask, anti-vaccination, anti-CRT people is a circle. Our Super is good, and our board is mostly good now, because my union worked our asses off to get normal people elected instead of the right-wingers who attempted a run. But these people keep showing up in their Trump 2024 shirts and yelling about "unmask our children" and other assorted shit. It is awful. Just awful.

Two hours and the board allowed it to go on? Yes indeed! To me, allowing the loud mouths to take over is just an open invitation for them to come back for more next time. Our board meetings have public participation rules: one part of public participation is for speech related to agenda items only. The open participation is last on the agenda. Each participant may only speak for three minutes. Board members take notes, but do not directly respond to public participation. The crazies still get up and holler, but at least they each only get 3 minutes. They often rip down their masks, and one called our union president a "fat fuck" as she walked up to speak. Real quality people.

I am pretty sure our school board meetings are run with an iron fist. I'll happily rant about the superintendent, but not in that area (I hold a grudge from when she was Alison's 3rd grade principal and she overruled her teacher's method when the teacher was the one who was right).
Now, there are crazy remarks as responses to every post made by the city, but the school board has, in my opinion, made it pretty clear that they aren't interested in public opinion. The biggest complaint in Facebook comments is how common core is ruining our kids, but those are from people without enough knowledge to know that our districts set their own curriculum and common core left as quickly as it came in. The things they are complaining about (new math mostly - they should have been paying attention to the way spelling was being taught) were around before common core and they aren't going away now.
