Do you usually start a layout with a sketch, photo(s), story/journaling, color palette, patterned paper, embellishment, kit (bought - manufacturer collection, monthly subscription, LSS-curated - or created from your stash), or something else? TIA.

I usually start with my photos and then pick out the paper to go with it (If I'm using another layout as inspiration, I'll pick that out before the paper). Journaling comes near the end but I know about how long my story will be and leave enough room for it as I'm creating the page.

1. Photos 2. Papers 3. Embellishments I didn't use to use sketches but I find myself using them now just to add speed to the process.

Once I know which photos I am using, I select the paper next. I like to mix patterns and solids.

I’ll start with just about anything.
1) Photos —> paper —> sketch (maybe) —> embellishments 2) papers —> sketch (maybe) —> photo —> embellishments 3) sketch —> photos —> paper —> embellishments 4) color palette —> papers —> photos —> embellishments 5) kit —> sketch (maybe) —> photos 6) challenge/class —> papers —> photos —> sketch (maybe) —> embellishments
So...unless I use a kit, embellishments are last. For a starting point, I’ll take inspiration from just about anywhere.

Wait, you mean you don't buy paper and hoard it for years because you really like it and plan on using it for that specific trip? Just me? (Kidding. Sort of. I bought 20 6x6 pads when Echo Park had one of their recent sales, which I'm coming to realize is the same paper pads every single time.)
When I do start an actual book, I usually go pictures first, see what I have that works well with the pics, layout ideas I have, and anything else I want to add to the page (ex., tickets from places we go or anything like that).

Sometimes I start with photos, but sometimes there is a certain paper(s) that I just have to use, and sometimes I find a challenge that sounds interesting that I want to try!

Like others, I start with photos and pull paper and embellies to use.
I sit down with what I have and decide what will go where and start cutting. I scrap 8.5x11 so I usually have to cut down 12x12 paper.

I usually start with pictures, then paper, then embellishments. Allison Davis’ class is pushing me out of my usual process. I’m starting with a sketch, then pictures, and so on. It’s really different for me to find pictures to work with the sketch than vice versa.

I have two ways to do it. 1) Paper line or kit, then photos 2) Photos, then paper line or kit
Occasionally I mix lines that are not in a kit but not often.
I usually get excited about a line (like any Vicki Boutin line, or any Simple Stories Vintage) and then go through all of my photos to find some that match in color or mood. I like to do several pages in a row with the same line- it makes the whole process go faster.
If I have a particular thing I want to scrap (like beach or graduation) I pick the photos first and then find paper that is on theme or matches the colors.

TIA. There's no rhyme or reason to my starting point. It can be a sketch, photo, story or collection and once in a while an embellishment with words (title, thicker word, etc).

I flip flop between papers and pictures first. Sometimes I have a specific collection that I want to use and then I will find some photos to work with it that I want to scrap. For my yearly PL album this year I am using one paper line with some supplementary stuff from my stash, so that is a project that I would start with paper first.
Otherwise, I start with my pictures and then go and pull paper from my stash, usually a collection, so I pull all the coordinating embellishments and then go back to my stash if I need more. When I pull paper, I would also pull tools, stencils, stamps, etc.

I look at photos, but I don't often print them before I know what sketch I am going to use. The other day I was choosing photos for a trip we'd taken last month. I wrote down the activity we did for the day. I noticed that my son's fiancé wore a big sun hat in several of the pictures on different days and those pics will also be a layout. I ended up with 10-12 different themes for the trip.
I find other ideas for layouts and then put then each one a piece of printing paper with the number of the photo/who is in the photo/direction of the photo. Then I look through my sketches by number of photos and see if I have one that would work with that number. I draw out the sketch on the printing paper and put the photo numbers into the sketch. Then I go back and write the size I need of each photo next to the number of the photo. Then it all goes to a master list of photo numbers where I write the size I want for each photo and sit down and edit and order photos. I choose papers that I think will go well for each layout.
It's a process if I have a lot, but when I get the photos home, I toss them into their 12 x 12 baggie with the paper I chose for the layout and in an evening, I have a good 12-20 layouts planned and in kits. If I am going to a crop, I add all the embellishments, but since I've been cropping from home lately, I just pull the baggie/layout I want to work on and go.

First I have pictures, then I look for the right CS, but one is too dark and the other is too light. Off to the store. Chat with the sales staff because I haven't seen them in a while, and the store has been rearranged. The why am I here moment lasts another half an hour, then I remember and I get twice the paper I need because I may make an error. So 4 sheets of CS and $25 later I get home to find I don't have any more 2X tape. Back to the store and a different shift is on, so more chat and memory lapse. Add in a very weak attention span, and it takes a long time to put a page together, not to mention an album. I'm 80, I am slower, or maybe I should say I just take my time. Oh yeah, my days are also interspersed with a nap(s).

I start with photos. Then I pull the 13 x 13 envelopes of products that relate to photo. Then I look through my "assorted" products binder and pull anything I might to use. Then I look through the product that I have pulled out and select possibilities. Then I pull coordinating paper possiblities. Then I make piles ....photo and next to it what I might want to use with that particular photo. This with that, and that with this, then start shuffling and mixing and matching, etc... Then assembly begins..... followed by detours of more sorting-reshuffling-mixing & matching. During it all, I make a cup of tea(or two or three), argue with my cat about her nosy presence and her sense of entitlement to be in the middle of whatever I am doing, look through my product stash in case I missed something I might want to use, look on line to see if there any new products that I might want to order, etc... I am years behind. It will get done when it gets done.

I use a lot of sketches, so my usual process is: Sketch > photos > papers/elements (I always use digital kits, so the papers and embellishments are together)
I find that it takes longer to find photos to match a sketch, so my preferred way is to choose the photos first, then find a sketch or template to match.
I am not an organised person at all, but with some things I am a bit OTT. All of the photos I want to scrap are listed on an Excel spreadsheet. There are 6 columns: 1. Date of photo(s) 2. Description of photos(s) 3. Total number of photos of that event 4. Number of landscape photos for that event 5. Number of portrait photos for that event 6. Number of square photos for that event
Then if I want to find photos to match a particular sketch, I filter the spreadsheet eg. 3 photos - 2 landscape & 1 square
I have also named all of my sketches to make them easier to find, example: 1 page 3 photo Sketch Savvy 142 2 page 8 photo PageMaps June 2021

It depends on what it is that inspired me to create this page.
I usually start with the photos. That will give me ideas for the theme and colour scheme. So next would be pp and then cs. Then I can use a sketch (or find a pinned LO or one in the Gallery that I can attempt to lift) to figure out how to cut and arrange and layer the pp. The embellishments come last. I want the title and journaling in place before I start adding extras.
But sometimes I am inspired by a sketch or a LO I have seen and set out to recreate that look, or I am taking on a scrapbook challenge of some sort on line, so the photos come after I have collected some of the other elements.
Or I am excited to try out a new technique or tool, and then think, now what could I DO with this...?

For PL it’s photos cards then embellishments & journaling
For full page scrapping it’s usually photo then idea in my head then papers, journaling & embellishments etc but once in a while the idea in my head comes from the paper not the photo.

Photos, papers, embellishments. I don’t use sketches. I don’t scraplift. Each page is designed around the photos.

I start with the photos or story I want to tell (if I don't have pics for that page).
Then I pull together elements, like paper and embellishments, to compliment it.

Generally photos, paper, embellishments.
But, if I've seen a sketch or layout I want to use as a starting off point, I might start with the sketch first and find photos that will work with it.

Thanks for sharing your process. It’s interesting to read the different approaches for a layout.
I'm the odd scrapper who starts with the story I want to tell, then gather any memorabilia & photos (as applicable) that support the story, write journaling, & select papers/sketch/embellishments.
