ERCOT (the board that regulates the TX power grid) is asking us to conserve energy. We’re supposed to set our AC’s at 78 or higher, not run large appliances and unplug things we’re not using. Y’all. It’s mid-June. We have had a VERY MILD summer so far. It’s only going to be 99 today (which is not THAT hot for these parts). What’s going to happen in July when it’s well into the hundreds every day? www.kxan.com/news/texas/ercot-conservation-alert-texans-asked-to-reduce-electric-use-on-monday/BTW, despite promises, Greg Abbott and the TX legislature have not done a thing to reform ERCOT. But they passed a very restrictive abortion law, a law prohibiting critical race theory to be taught in schools, and are going to pass sweeping voter “reform” (suppression) laws. Yes haw.

What’s going to happen in July when it’s well into the hundreds every day? everyone better buy generators right now for later when there are blackouts, I guess... those legislators sure know what's important (to themselves), don't they??

It's gonna be a long summer, I expect that we'll get the same notice every day for the next 100 days. I really don't want another 4 day power outage this year.

There’s no money for silly things like a power grid. Abbott’s latest obsession is finishing the border wall that the orange dictator started.

It’s awful Texans are still dealing with this. I’ve been in places that were 100+ deg without A/C and it was sheer torture. But, hey, at least the gun-toting citizens no longer have to get permits and training. /s

This has been on going in California for decades. At least 20 years. And the customers of SCE have to put up with their shit during hot days and fire hazard days instead of them taking money from their wallets and bank accounts to fix up our power sources.
Sorry you have to deal with it too.

I seriously doubt there are any to be bought. We looked last month at getting an extra one to run DH's man cave and they were backordered til the end of the year.

Maybe Ted will go to Cancun to escape the heat. You know, ocean breezes and all that. Hope he takes his dog this time.

I live in DE and we get this kind of message when it gets in the high 80’s. It’s not limited to just Texas.

K guys. I'm moving to Dallas next week. What do I need? A generator? What else should we have? Does my house have to be wired for a generator? You guys are scaring me.

I know the situation is horrible and it doesn't have to be this way, but if you want a laugh, check out blaire erskine on twitter. She knocked it out of the park with a parody of an ERCOT spokesperson.

So sorry. I thought it was only California that had this issue. I’m expecting to hear that tomorrow and the next few days as we are having a heatwave. Seriously tons of people have solar now so it should be better but seems to be getting worse

Welp, we’ve decided to follow Ted’s lead, and are heading to Cancun on Thursday (assuming that the tropical whatever brewing in the Gulf doesn’t manifest into something that threatens Houston).
I’m so sick of greed and incompetence running the show in Texas.

A gasoline generator will allow you to run some appliances like a fridge and some lights and fans, but it won’t run your AC. You don’t need anything special - just some extension cords and several gallons of gas. A whole home natural gas generator is not something you’re going to install by next week, and it’s very expensive anyway.

It's really really hard to vote and get those fuckers out when we are so incredibly gerrymandered, it's terrible. I never thought I'd say this, but I am beginning to hate TX and I wish I could leave.

I live in DE and we get this kind of message when it gets in the high 80’s. It’s not limited to just Texas. Maybe not, but many people DIED in February with the power outages and the extreme cold. It was 105 with the heat index in my town today. So you can take your "high 80s" and shove it. Summer has just begun for us, June is usually not bad, it gets really hot in July and August. We are so screwed if they are already having issues with the grid. SO SCREWED.

I'm in California so I completely understand the pain of multiple power outages. It disgusts me that America in 2021 can't figure this shit out and straighten out and modernize our infrastructure. My state, in particular, is embarrassing that it's just expected that we will have a four day power outage when there's a light breeze in the fall. Friends from other states visit and are shocked at the state of our roads. Water storage? What's that, we certainly don't prioritize that.
Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...... just give up and get a generator as soon as you can. My generator will run my fridge and a couple other small things easily. I solar powered lights I bring inside from the front yard at night, a nice LED camping lantern, battery operated string lights from Amazon that I decorate the house with. I've also invested in a couple of power banks that can charge my laptop and run my aquarium heater. I keep a stash of foods that are easy to heat on the stove top and prepare in minimal lighting. Finally in my third year of being in power outage central I am feeling like I have a handle on this.

K guys. I'm moving to Dallas next week. What do I need? A generator? What else should we have? Does my house have to be wired for a generator? You guys are scaring me. If you want to connect it up so the generator can directly power certain areas of your house you do. Otherwise you have to plug the stuff into the handful of outlets that are on the generator itself which means multiple long heavy duty extension cords, etc. and that isn’t exactly convenient. After our power was out for close to a week several years back, we hired an electrician to come and connect a separate little box to connect our generator directly to the house. It will only power the cooktop, the microwave, our freezers and refrigerators and the well pump, but at least we’ll be able to eat and flush the toilet if the power ever goes out for that long again.

Is solar popular in the US? It's standard to have some solar, even if only for your hot water system, in new builds here in Australia, and there are also rebates available if you want to retrofit an existing building. Tesla power walls are also offered by some builders. One of my colleagues would get a cheque from her electricity provider every quarter because she was supplying more energy to the grid than she was using.

We've had one for a month sitting beside our garage. We can't get it hooked up because CPS won't give the OK to the electricians. CPS is still fighting our solar panel install too. We started this process the first of April.

We do have solar powered glowing skulls for Halloween though. haha -- I'm happy that I don't live in an area with the same type of problems you all have, but we do have power failures from time to time and I try to be prepared. Solar charged lights would be so easy to have! What a great idea!

It has to be hooked into their grid to automatically come on when the power goes out. It's about $7K.
