We rented one in Hawaii when we were there in March and had a great time!
I wish I could tell you more about renting them on the mainland.

Yeah, we're just going to San Antonio for 3 days and the only place I found locally they are $118 a day, not including taxes. NOT going to happen. Oh well.  |

Yes, but it was in Arizona. Fox Rental rents them, but I don't know if they have any locations in Texas.
The price doesn't surprise me though. Since they are 4-wheel vehicles, I'm guessing that a lot of people rent them to go off roading and don't exactly know what they are doing so the damage risk is pretty high, even if it's just something like rock dings.
I know we didn't pay that much in Phoenix, but I also know it was more than we usually pay to rent a regular vehicle. And yes, we did go off roading but we have Jeeps (and DH is a long time Scout owner).
Hopefully you can find something fun to drive.
