I bought a zoo pass this month, for a whole year of zoo trips.
Give me your best zoo-related photo ideas! I will always have my kids with me, so ideas including them in the pics are great.
Also needed: Best zoo layout ideas!

we like close-ups of the animals. There is a gorilla statue at our zoo we always take kid photos with - every visit. There are lovely flowers and trees and we usually get some photos of that. When we were going regularly - I tried to take enough people photos for a layout and then focused on one section of the zoo to photograph/scrap each visit - because otherwise I ended up with 200+ pics every visit all quite similar.

At the National Zoo in DC, they had a wonderful sign in the front, right before the entrance. It was on ground level, so we positioned our kids in and around the sign. The letter “O” was very conducive to a child peeking out through it. It may not work for every zoo, depending on how they do their sign, but it’s worth checking to see if it would work for you.

Depends on the zoo but pics I like are my daughter looking into the giant polar bear or hippo underwater viewing area. Feeding the goats. Eating ice cream. Our zoo has a skyglider so it’s fun to take a picture with the camera over our feet looking down below. We also have a train and a carousel so those are good photo opps. And I never ever pass up the opportunity to use a photobooth.

Apparently, My favorite zoo layout ( must be because I accidentally did it twice ) is a 4x6 or 5x7 photo of us at the zoo with torn paper animals around it. I think ( bear with me I’m the person who completely forgot doing a same layout twice ) the facing page a number of smaller pictures in a grid on coordinating paper. Micheals used to have animal print papers and I’ve done lions, zebras, elephants etc.
I had no idea I did it twice until recently putting all my layouts in the albums and lo & behold 2 very similar layouts. Some of the torn animals were different some were the same. I must have been ‘happy’ to find scraps to tear for the animals for the 2nd layout. Lmao zero recollection of doing it twice.
My favorite pictures include the kids doing kid things at the zoo. Like looking out of the bubble eyes of a tree frog in the playground or interacting with an animal behind glass. Monkeys seem to love making faces and watching people as much as the people like seeing the monkeys. Or the looks of wonder on their faces when they see something new.,( when they were younger )

ETA: Wishing you and your family loads of fun at the zoo! Definitely go stand away from the kids when they are interacting with animals. Walking to another side of the enclosure allows you to take a different pic of their encounter with the animals. It's a fun way to incorporate what the enclosure looks like, what that day's feeding or enrichment looks like (especially for the themed enrichments for holidays, pride month, etc.). It's great to document your zoo's enrichment programme, animal-caretaker relationship and animals' diet. Here's the kind of shot I mean:

We have such a great zoo. the animals are usually close up and sometimes quite interactive. My zoo layouts often include more animal and less paper.

Just remember to get a lot of photos with the kids in them. I take a lot of zoo photos and I noticed that when I scrap I like to put one picture of the kids on the page and then several animals. I go to the Columbus Zoo quite a bit (or at least did before covid) and they have lots of animal sculptures. I have quite a few pictures of the kids with the sculptures. I noticed I have years of photos of the kids with the penguin sculpture. It was neat to see how the kids have grown. Because so many of my zoo photos are from the same zoo, I'll admit to using a photo of the kids from one visit and on the same page photos of the animals from a different visit. They are the same animals, just some years they are more photogenic than others.

Each kid with their favourite animal/animal statue and then journal their age and reason(s) why they love this particular animal right now. I remembered I have a photo of myself with an animal statue at a zoo when I was a child and I love that it happens to be a statue of my favourite animal. I didn't recall I loved this specific animal already at such a young age but undoubtedly, this is why I posed with it. Sweet memory to look back on!

I think a lot of zoos have animal themed play equipment for kids to mess around on, to get the 'climbing into the tiger cage' energy out in appropriate ways... so that might be a good place to get some photos that are more about the kids and less about the animals. (I'm assuming your kiddos are little).
I love taking photos of animals but how many photos of them will you want/need in your album. It could get pretty dull for other people to look through, especially given how disappointing some zoo photos are compared to what we see on nature shows and google images. (depends on the zoo and your skills, and your mileage may vary anyway. Some people love looking through zoo photos).
Think about which camera to take if you have a choice - long lens will get you good animal closeups but might fail you when it comes to getting good shots of the kids. Phone may not zoom well enough or be fast enough for some shots. I guess you'll have lots of opportunity to test that out with multiple visits.
I have a photo of a huge crocodile at Singapore Zoo that goes with the story of it waiting until no one else was in the viewing area except me and then very deliberately snapping its tail down hard to splash me over the wall. Scared me half to death. I wish selfies had been a thing back then - I would've loved to have a photo of me to go with the story, both for a sense of scale and also because a splashed wet face selfie would've made people really stop and look at the page instead of flipping by after seeing a so-so photo of a croc. So I guess my point is to take lots of pix of the kids interacting as well as photos of the critters, then you can build good stories about the kids.
Maybe do a "favorite critter of the visit" photo for each kid each time? Or some other series that you do each visit to show the change of seasons and kids growing and other changes.

We visited a zoo when my DS was about 7 or 8, and I have a fabulous photo of him standing at the aviary. He was looking at a White Crested Laughingthrush and asking me how it got its name. I suggested he tell it his favourite joke, and he did. I was so happy to capture DS’s expression when the thrush immediately started "laughing"! I did a layout and featured DS's joke next to his photo. For those who need to know, it was “What’s brown and sticky?" Answer: A stick!

There's a silhouette of a gorillas with their arms outstretched at the zoo nearest me. It was fun to have the kids do the same pose and see how they've grown.

I love all these ideas, Peas!! Thank you so much!!
On our trip last week, i took many pics, including some group shots that include me, plus had one of my kids take a few of just me. So many of the pics of the kids have their back to me, while they look at the animals. But I like catching them in the moment, and don't want to make it ALL about the photos.
I love the ideas, y'all! Thank you!

I would say most zoos have animals looked down pretty tight. If there is a chain link, get your lens in-between the links. In our zoo, more of the mellow animals can touch you if they want. We have giraffes that grab food out of your hand, wallabies that will hop right to you and penguins that waddle among people if they feel so inclined. Park yourself at those places and see if anything good happens.

This is bringing back such happy memories. We used to have a season pass to the zoo near DS's home and would take the grands all the time when they were little.

Thanks so much for all of these wonderful ideas! I have a lot of animal pictures, with just animals. And you are right - how many animal pictures do I really need in my scrapbook?
I will definitely incorporate the ideas of getting my kids in the same frame as the animal (when possible, LOL) the next time we visit the zoo. Thank you once again!

This is bringing back such happy memories. We used to have a season pass to the zoo near DS's home and would take the grands all the time when they were little. We have had a zoo pass for years. My sons are now 25 and 27 and they buy their own. Our zoo is amazing (on the side of a mountain) and they do not receive any money from the city or state (on of the few zoos that doesn't) and they rely on ticket/pass sales. When they announce they are fund raising to build a new enclosure, they receive millions from people who just love that zoo.

So, we just visited again.
Visited a new exhibit, took pics.
More petting zoo (love the goats!)
Did take some of kids with the statues.
A shot of the younger kids eating ice cream cones.
Good, good visit.

Okay, bear with me all.... We've visited again.
More ice cream pics. Dippin Dots this time. Soft serve cones melted soooo fast last time.
Took kid pics with multiple animal statues.
Stood back and watched the kids interact with each other and look at the animals.
And, best lesson I learned today....
Two words: Feeding Time. Got some great shots of the tortoises and the apes and some smaller primates eating what the zookeeper just put out for them.
Also, Babies! It's baby season, and got a few good shots of a monkey with her baby clinging to her tummy. Also a flamingo with a puffy gray chick, and a few flamingos standing over & sitting on eggs.
We also parked ourselves on a bench to watch the penguins swim by. Got a few nice shots.

LavenderLayoutLady Thought of you when I came across this video on YouTube recently! There were some neat tips I hadn't thought of like wearing dark clothes to help with shooting through glass.
